Now that the world did not end, things are a bit calmer now. I agree that certain parts of Canada currently are and would continue to be advantageous to the U.S. compared to others. As in the past, necessity will drive any such relationships for practical, not political reasons. The way I see it as a biased, bastard American is that Canada needs and wants to get its own house in order...be "Canada strong" (not just "Ontario strong") going forward to be in the best position to survive yet another dust up with the United States. Trump has done Canada a huge favour if it takes the opportunity to come out better on the other side.

Seriously though...housing is the biggest challenge. Tree planting or farms where you're often in a camp or bunkhouse setting is one thing. On a fish boat home and work were often one and the same especially when seasons were 6 months or more long. Bouncing back and forth between a ski resort in the interior or a resort on the coast is clearly different. Some employers offer housing but many simply can't, especially the smaller entrepreneurs that set up shop seasonally. Even 50 years ago around here however it was not at all uncommon that home was a shack on a beach, a tree fort, or the back seat of your car. From there you moved up to a friends couch, a shared apt/house and if you worked at it or were lucky one day a downpayment on an empty lot. Then it was back to a treehouse or shack while you built a regular house. And sure enough we've often got a migrant parked out back nowadays.

They're more fun to work in as well. I'm fortunate that I'm employed in tourism with one of the highest paying and satisfying jobs you can get on the marine side of things. I've had more than a couple deckhands and co-workers who've moved on to even more lucrative and full time things like the coast guard or the towing industry. Living the dream eh? I do have to say the deckhands I have now are a lot better looking and smelling than what I was used to as a fisherman.
