Political correctness erodes society. Merit should trump "virtue". Merit over identity is the backbone of liberalism and liberal democracy, of MLK's philosophy. Society has become far too soft. Everyone's feelings are hurt. We need to stop giving everyone's feelings so much attention. Good intentions but bad results. Truth > feelings.3 points

Calling Trump "evil" that he is literally Hitler and is going to destroy Democracy... are nutty things.3 points
-
If this were the other way around, it would be non-stop 24/7 wall to wall media coverage about how Republicans have caused this environment with all their hateful rhetoric... but since it is Trump... Like, gee, maybe you shouldn't tell everyone that Trump is literally Hitler and if he wins this election it will literally be rounding people up and killing them... Nah... since it is Democrats pushing that garbage, very little will be said.3 points

So your proof that Trump tried to take over the government is a memo that wasn't used, a speech that told people to march peacefully and patriotically and alternate electors that have been used dozens of times before, including JFK. Your lies are so pervasive that you don't even know what reality is.2 points

There is a place for women in policing and the military. For the most part, these are not overly physically demanding jobs for anyone reasonably fit. Except for that small number of times when they absolutely ARE. And those tend to be the most critical times. Very, very few women are up to the task there due to simple, undeniable physical and biological limitations on them set by nature. And given few women even bother to apply, the DEI effort to get the number up as high as possible leads to people getting taken on and promoted far beyond their abilities and experience. We see that in other occupations, too, like politics, like our federal cabinet, for one.2 points

Left wing talking points? His previous secretary of defense, Mark Esper said he was a threat to democracy, wanted to send troops into the streets to quell demonstrations and riots and wanted to recall retired officers who criticized him to active service so they could be court-martialled. Other White house aides have also said he's a threat to democracy, like Alyssa Griffin, who said “I saw the actual executive order at the end of the last administration, ready to go, that would remake every civil servant into a political appointee and a loyalist to Trump,”. Another White House aide, Cassidy Hutchison said "I think that Donald Trump is the most grave threat we will face to our democracy in our lifetime, and potentially in American history.”His former Chief of Staff, John Kelly said Trump admires autocrats and dictators and has nothing but contempt for democratic institutions, the constitution, and the law. His former Attorney General said Trump will bring only chaos and that he shouldn't be anywhere near the White House. His other defense secretary said "Trump is the first president president in my lifetime who doesn't try to unite the American people, does not even pretend to try. Instead he divides us." His first secretary of state said “(Trump’s) understanding of global events, his understanding of global history, his understanding of US history was really limited. It’s really hard to have a conversation with someone who doesn’t even understand the concept for why we’re talking about this.” His National Security Advisor said “We saw the absence of leadership, really anti-leadership, and what that can do to our country.” These are not the Left wing speaking.2 points

Maybe Trump shouldn't talk about becoming a dictator and putting people in jail, including the media that criticize him, and he and his team shouldn't plan how they'll fire all the neutral public servants and military and federal police and hire only those 'loyal' to Trump, hmm?2 points

Some Americans will definitely believe this. They aren't very bright, nor educated enough to recall any xenophobic, nationalist, authoritarian, narcissists who narrowly avoided assassination attempts. 🤷♂️2 points

Rahim Mohamed: The attempt on Trump's life has made his re-election all but inevitable If the results of November’s presidential election weren’t already a foregone conclusion, they are now Published Jul 14, 2024 Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump looks to be OK after a bullet grazed his ear on Saturday evening, in a failed attempt on his life at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa. Trump, who was already reportedly expecting a landslide victory in November before the dramatic turn of events on Saturday, can now go ahead and start measuring the drapes in preparation for his near-inevitable return to the White House. It’s a done deal, folks. Especially after a photographer at the scene captured a perfectly timed photo of a bloodied Trump raising a fist in defiance while being swarmed by Secret Service agents, somehow standing almost directly under an American flag. It’s an image that will no doubt go down in the annals of history, and one that’s likely to snuff out any remaining hope the Democrats had of keeping Trump from recapturing the presidency. A live shot of the scene caught Trump telling members of his security detail to “wait” before pumping his fist in the air and mouthing the words “fight, fight, fight” to the stunned crowd of supporters. Even people who weren’t fans of Trump beforehand had to be impressed by his grace under literal gunfire. As of this writing, little information has been made public about the shooter. An eyewitness told BBC News that he saw a man armed with a rifle scale a rooftop near the venue while Trump was speaking. The witness claimed the would-be assassin was killed by the Secret Service after opening fire on the crowd. Now juxtapose Trump’s public display of vigour and bravery in the face of a near-death experience with President Joe Biden’s outward feebleness, which looks to only be getting worse as the campaign heats up. Saturday’s events merely solidified the already pervasive campaign narrative, further highlighting the contrast between Trump’s vigour and Biden’s torpor. At this point, it’s doubtful that even swapping Biden out for a stronger candidate can salvage the Democratic party’s chances of holding onto the White House. Trump, who’s shrugged off the myriad obstacles that have been tossed in his way, has now shown himself to be bulletproof — literally. If the results of November’s presidential election weren’t already a foregone conclusion, they are now. Donald Trump will be the 47th president of the United States and just the second president in history, following Grover Cleveland, to serve non-consecutive terms. The election’s outcome has been sealed with a bullet. https://nationalpost.com/opinion/the-attempt-on-trumps-life-has-made-his-re-election-all-but-inevitable2 points

Get a grip you stupid God-damned loser. Dems incited actual violence against police, Republicans, Trump, and everyone who voted for him for the last 8 years now. Michelle Obama incited violence in her grad commencement speech, and last week Jull Biden called Trump evil. Your leftist loser shtick is getting old now you worthless piece of shit.2 points

I've flown UAVs while deployed, very capable, enjoyed the experience, the technology is cool and there's no doubt that having them saved Canadian lives in Afghanistan. Even so, I have this ingrained and lingering "old guy" fear that over reliance on technology creates vulnerabilities and the more you rely on the technology the more you have to account for those vulnerabilities. I've seen the effect of not doing that over and over again. It even applies to everyday life, cut a fibre optic cable by accident and the fallout can be significant. No internet, no 911, no cell service, no banking, no scanning items at the grocery store, no flights other than self dispatch (and airlines don't do that), no gas, etc etc. Huge regional impact right down to traffic lights during rush hour. If the mission computer fails during a critical ASW event now what? Old timers practice this stuff regularly and when they do, young guys on the crew usually roll their eyes. Things like plotting boards and using smoke markers as a visual references sometimes saves the day. If you drop an electrical bus and all you have is INS an immediate switch to maps and lat/ long is easy if you've practiced it. Not so easy if you haven't. The scenarios are endless, I could write a book on degraded ops and ruin your whole day on a check ride... so, while it needs to be practiced, there's no need to be crazy about it. That said, defence in depth is more than just words. The HUD's a great thing, HUD cripples aren't. Sometimes a hand on the stick, one on the throttle, feet on the rudder pedals, lining the target up between your legs and putting grease pencil marks on the canopy wins the day... some here might be surprised at how often it proves true. One thing seems to be a constant though, it's only guys with grey hair that carry grease pencils. Watch for them, if nothing else, the reason they do is sure to be entertaining.2 points

They are already complaining on the CBC that Republicans are politicizing this and that Trump could be a martyr. Even on this particular thread, it didn't take very long for someone to bring up the absurd comparison to Hitler. It's this kind of hateful rhetoric that just adds fuel to the fire.2 points

If it were the other way around MAGA would be telling us it’s a false flag conspiracy. Every political party on earth has fringe hateful extremists but the Republican party has made hateful extremism mainstream This attack doesn’t change that fact. Nor does it change the fact that the heightened tension that has only escalated since Trump first entered the picture in has been primarily driven by Republicans. “Always dial it up to 11” has the been standard MAGA M.O. Would this shooter still have done what he did in a different climate? Maybe. Maybe not. Anyway Trump seems to now have his Reichstag Fire moment, regardless of whether the attack was real (as it seems to be so far) it will be used as justification for previously unthinkable actions by Republicans in the future. Just you wait.2 points

Unless literal political saviours comes along to fix countries and reform our systems, many major problems aren't going to be fixed given the corruption, selfishness, and short-term thinking (for electoral reasons) of our politicians. I predict some kind of uprising. Hopefully not violent, just people taking to the streets demanding change. Politicians today are increasingly sociopaths. They care about their own power over people, seemingly more and more. It makes me so sad, to see our countries crumble from corruption and selfishness. This isn't going to get resolved without hitting rock bottom and people demanding change. Young people can't afford homes without having parents with a lot of savings. In Canada we have a healthcare crisis. A lack of doctors and nurses. ER waits are insane, and many millions can't get a family doctor. Many elderly are becoming homeless in the US. The baby boomers will keep aging and will reach an age where longterm care homes are necessary for many, and there won't be enough space because proper preparations weren't made to a problem easily predictable because politicians spending our money for short-term vote gains is more important to them than acting in our best interests. At some point the masses are going to rise up and it probably won't be pretty.1 point
-
I didn't 'justify' it. I even admit that politicians on both sides lie and that the liberal media puts out a slanted news picture. That's the difference between you and me. You believe your side is pure as the driven snow when the American right-wing media are utterly, utterly dishonest about everything they cover politically and socially. Nothing better describes its level of honesty and integrity than Tucker Carlson spending five years praising Trump as the messiah and then saying in private texts, “We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights. I truly can’t wait. I hate him passionately. ... I can’t handle much more of this." Talk about a hypocrite! And let's not forget “We’re all pretending we’ve got a lot to show for it, because admitting what a disaster it’s been is too tough to digest,” he wrote in another text message, referring to the “last four years.” “But come on. There isn’t really an upside to Trump.”1 point

Tabula rasa man has entered the chat! You could just read the memo. It's presented in bullet point format. 🙄 VP Pence, presiding over the joint session (or Senate Pro Tempore Grassley, if Pence recuses himself), begins to open and count the ballots, starting with Alabama (without conceding that the procedure, specified by the Electoral Count Act, of going through the States alphabetically is required). When he gets to Arizona, he announces that he has multiple slates of electors, and so is going to defer decision on that until finishing the other States. This would be the first break with the procedure set out in the Act. At the end, he announces that because of the ongoing disputes in the 7 States, there are no electors that can be deemed validly appointed in those States. That means the total number of "electors appointed" – the language of the 12th Amendment – is 454. This reading of the 12th Amendment has also been advanced by Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe. A "majority of the electors appointed" would therefore be 228. There are at this point 232 votes for Trump, 222 votes for Biden. Pence then gavels President Trump as re-elected. Howls, of course, from the Democrats, who now claim, contrary to Tribe's prior position, that 270 is required. So Pence says, fine. Pursuant to the 12th Amendment, no candidate has achieved the necessary majority. That sends the matter to the House, where “the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote ..." Republicans currently control 26 of the state delegations, the bare majority needed to win that vote. President Trump is re-elected there as well. One last piece. Assuming the Electoral Count Act process is followed and, upon getting the objections to the Arizona slates, the two houses break into their separate chambers, we should not allow the Electoral Count Act constraint on debate to control. That would mean that a prior legislature was determining the rules of the present one – a constitutional no-no (as Tribe has forcefully argued). So someone – Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, etc. – should demand normal rules (which includes the filibuster). That creates a stalemate that would give the state legislatures more time to weigh in to formally support the alternate slate of electors, if they had not already done so. The main thing here is that Pence should do this without asking for permission – either from a vote of the joint session or from the Court. Let the other side challenge his actions in court, where Tribe (who in 2001 conceded the President of the Senate might be in charge of counting the votes) and others who would press a lawsuit would have their past position – that these are non-justiciable political questions – thrown back at them, to get the lawsuit dismissed. The fact is that the Constitution assigns this power to the Vice President as the ultimate arbiter. We should take all of our actions with that in mind.1 point

And now you are blatantly lying. Blatantly. Trump lost the election, and tried to convince Mike Pence to simply declare him the winner or to declare a contingent election based of fake electors. That's not a theory or an opinion. It's documented fact. He literally tried to overthrow democracy and seize power from the people. It is beyond imagination that you self-proclaimed patriots could ever forgive such an action, turning your backs on your country in service of this singularly horrible man.1 point

Maybe because he's not the president. The Secret Service has denied there was any request for additional people, and that, in fact, additional people had been assigned due to the increased tempo of events planned.1 point

The Canadian government spent the money for the consul general.... The Canada House residence in London is equal, if not more than that. And the MacDonald Building residence in London is worth 5 times a s much. Just saying, diplomatic buildings in national capitals or major cities of other countries are not cheap. This is a non political statement because no matter who is in power, the buildings are still there and used. ....and.... we cannot even decide what residence to have here in Canada in Ottawa for our political leader LOL1 point

We are now seeing that this attempt on Trump is bringing out the worst in some people who are likely disappointed that it wasn't successful. Or trying to blame Trump himself. HTF did you go from drones and the possible vulnerabilities associated with over reliance on technology directly to the nuclear triad EMP bursts and tempest hardened infrastructure? Actually, never mind... carry on, I'll ignore you.1 point

Yep, I wouldn't be shocked if they did that anyway, just out of habit. For real. While this is a broader trend too (negativity bias, click-baity alarmism, etc), I was real amused by the irony of listening to some guy being interviewed--a man who voluntariliy chose to attend a donald trump rally--solomley declaring afterwards that America needs to stop with all the heated rhetoric.1 point
-
Good Lord, we've leaped from the vulnerabilities inherent with over reliance on technology to the nuclear triad and EMP blasts in a single bound. But realistically, it's the little stuff that eats your lunch and gets sporty with your best efforts. There's a world of daily conundrums that exist below the outer limits of the nuclear triad, it's a place where pretty is as pretty does and simple isn't the same as easy. A wise man once said: In war, while everything is simple, even the simplest thing is difficult. Difficulties accumulate and produce frictions which no one can comprehend who has not seen war.1 point

Oh please. How many people thought Obama would never get out of the White House alive? And how many cranks from the far right have depicted Biden as a threat to America for the last four years? Tons. Tight security made it almost impossible to get a shot off without dying. I don't know who this shooter was but I'm guessing he was nuts. All the ones I know of recently, as in going back to Ford, have been crazies. Because he's more likely to take a shot at someone than be shot at?1 point

This just happened in 2017... Remember when the Dems and CNN were calling it humour when: Kathy Griffin put her severed-head effigy of Trump on social media Johnny Depp said that it might be time for another actor to assassinate a president Madonna bragged that she dreamed of blowing up the WH Maxine Waters shrieked to her supporters that they needed to get in the faces of opposition members and let them know that they're not welcome? (it was normal for Republicans to get harassed and threatened at restaurants for months after that) Not long after that, Rand Paul was jumped from behind by an irate neighbour while he was out in his own yard and had some ribs cracked, AND AN ALT-LEFT SHOOTER WENT AND FIRED A BUNCH OF ROUNDS AT A CONGRESSIONAL BASEBALL GAME. The Dems never took any accountability for any of that. Then the Dems also said that protests at SCJ's homes were ok just recently(Biden said that).1 point
