I don't share your negative outlook. When I was a child, living in British Columbia, racism was accepted. First Nations people did not have the right to vote. People of African, Japanese and Chinese descent were decriminated against and that was seen as okay. Jews were denied entry to many clubs, restaurants and businesses. In the area I lived in in the west Kootenays, Doukhobors were shunned. Can you imagine that a community like that who are devoted to peace and devotion were looked down on by their neighbours. In 1975, a student at the U of S came out as gay and the Faculty Association executive met to have him expelled. Fortunately, the President of the Faculty Association spoke up and explained if the student was forced to leave for being a homosexual, so would he, for the same reason. Crime is down. Racism still exists but it has undergone a dramatic decline since I was a kid. We are living in a country that is blessed with the bounty God gave us. We live in peace. Our standard of living is incredible, compared to any other country. Our spiritual life is evolving, but God doesn't give a rat's pajamas how you lable yourself. It only cares that you treat others in the manner you would wish to be treated.

A real "democracy" provides the electorate opportunities to vote in their preferred candidate based of the information they are given by the media. However...if said media does not present the entire spectrum of a candidate's positions, the electorate is destined to cast votes without knowing all the facts. This sort of BS has been happening with more and more regularity. The media chooses sides and promotes that side while demeaning the other side. That's called propaganda. The kind found in places like Russia...NAZI Germany...Communist China...and today its happening the USA and Canada. That's not real democracy...its fascism.

The latest poll has the UCP up overall in popular vote, but the NDP is leading in the critical battlefield of Calgary. So the actual seat count projections went up by one or two for the ndp and down for the UCP, However the increase in votes solidifies a few close ridings so the chances of the UCP winning a majority went up even if they win with a couple less seats. The Odds of a UCP majority (reduced in seats) is now 77%

Being "leftist" and all, I think I should point out that I agree - "cancelling" Canada day is the wrong thing to do. Are they going to actually cancel the day - as in, no stat holiday and not allowing anyone to have any kind of Canada Day related celebration? Or are they cancelling city-sponsored celebrations, and everyone else can do what they want? If its the latter, is it just for this year or permanently? If they're cancelling city-sponsored events for this year only, I kind of get that as a gesture. If this gesture is followed up by something substantial (no idea what a municipality might do), then ok. But if it's just a gesture - good for a news cycle and then they forget about it, then I think its nothing more than virtue signaling.
