That means it's about politics (power and control) to them, not defending liberal democratic values. We're seeing liberal democracy crumbling before our eyes in both the US and Canada. You don't need a permit to hold a religious service or evening of Christian music in a church. In addition (and IMO of course), cancelling virtually any peaceful assembly to appease wild eyed slobbering extremists of any stripe (that's any stripe Herb) is and should be an affront to any sensible person who subscribes to any set of values / freedoms worth defending.
