  1. You wouldn’t have said that in 1939 to Churchill would you? You don’t say that about Israel do you? Surrendering to an invader and ceding territory isn’t peace. If you’re so into peace why don’t you just want Russia to go home? That would bring instant peace, same day. Much faster than negotiating ceasefire and minerals and territorial concessions.

  2. I'm in for a a couple reasons, one is that for me the CBC is like a touch stone - it's made the relative merits of the concept of being Canadian obvious. Growing up watching CBC on our black and white rabbit-eared TV, listening to a crackling CBC signal late at night drifting far offshore after a days fishing or stoking the fire by oil lamp in a cabin in the middle of boonies the CBC just made it better. But there's nostalgia and then there's practicality. I see an important role and value in having a well funded public broadcaster to provide a public owned perspective as opposed to a corporate owned and dominated media. A publicly owned source of information is an entirely appropriate counterweight to that. And finally, if there was ever a calamitous event that cut Canadians off from one another a public broadcaster would probably make recovering from it easier.

  3. A ceasefire without guarantees is just an opportunity for Putin to build up for a new assault. Trump doesn't give a rats ass about Ukrainian lives, all he cares about is how much he can extort from Ukraine before he hands it over to the Russians.

  4. Trump's abuse of Zelensky has finally woken Europe up. Yes Starmer says the US must be part of it but it is a giant up yours when it comes to a Trump and Putin show. The message to Trump is, Europe will be involved in any peace talks and so will Ukraine, otherwise Europe will continue to increase support for Ukraine.

  9. Again: would the US invade Canada if we were saying that we were going to sign a "defence" pact with Russia, China, Iran and NoKo? The answer is "OH HELL YEAH!" Never forget that. The US didn't make "them" do it. They got Zelensky to do it. Biden & Co dangled the carrot of "You get to end up being the bigshot who stood up to Russia and won the seemingly impossible fight, and you'll be rich", and Zelensky fell for it like a leftard cultist watching CNN. Now the rug has just been pulled out from under him. Trump's not playing that game. Whether this was planned among the GOP and Dems - ie Trump along with Biden's handlers - is pure speculation. Maybe Trump just arrived on the scene and saw an opportunity to steal more than just Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Gaza. Either way, if Trump gets his way, at the end of the day... The US gets: a bunch of valuable minerals, like $500B worth they got to see a bunch of Russians get killed they got to raise the value of the weapons that they sell abroad the Russians' weapons that compete with theirs lost value no US soldiers died Ukraine gets: generational trauma the loss of 30,000 sq km the loss of Crimea, about 10,000 sq km more the loss of $500B worth of minerals to the US the loss of all the oil and minerals and agriculture and manufacturing in Eastern Ukraine tens of thousands of dead men, women and children hundreds of thousands of amputees, burn victims, blind and deaf Russia gets: tens of thousands of dead soldiers they used up a lot of old munitions and tanks they lost some modern weapons, munitions and vehicles the weapons they sell abroad lost value they get Crimea and all the oil resources it has access to they get the smoking hole formerly known as the Donbas and all the natural resources there Zelensky gets: to look like a stooge gobs of money that ordinary Ukrainians won't touch in twenty generations a dose of Polonium at some point. Peons like us get to fight about who got what and why in political forums. None of us really know. None of us have the real answers (aside from when we just saw mom and dad fighting in the WH) so none of us are right. But we're still alive, and we still dislike the other side.

  10. NATO is an enemy to Russia. I know, because I was in NATO, and I know what we talked about. I know whose ships and planes we were taught to recognize. I know what kind of planes and missiles we were told would be coming at us. They taught us about our torpedoes vs Russian subs. Etc, etc, etc. NATO is about RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA! Always has been. Russia sees NATO as liars and aggressors because of our history of doing the exact same things that liars and aggressors do. Right? Just listen to yourself, f-tard. "Baker, Kohl et al never signed anything, so we don't have to honour our agreements!" Who does that? Well, you do, and that goes without saying, but I don't. We said that we wouldn't move NATO east and now we're all liars. Sure, you're ok with that, but I don't like being lumped in with a greasy skid like you. NATO should not be going into Ukraine, period. Ukraine should not be courting NATO, period. Ukraine is a very bad neighbour, period. Now Ukrainians are fighting a US/NATO proxy war, and I wouldn't give them the steam off my sh1t. They can go to hell.

  11. Countries joined NATO because they see Russia as a threat and Ukraine has proven them right. No one forces anyone to join NATO. NATO is a defensive alliance there is no obligation for any NATO country to go to war except if one of them is attacked. That's why there would have been no war if Ukraine was a member. NATO prevents Russian aggression and that's why Putin can't have it. Donbas War

  12. Russia couldn't just leave the Donbas to the mercy of Ukrainian troops. That much is clear. They let NATO break their word dozens of times, NATO kept advancing towards Russia, and Russia had to put an end to NATO aggression. NATO's advance was in Biden's best interests, and Ukraine paid the price (proxy war, dumbass).

  14. Here's as leftist a POV as you'll get. They even call Trump and Fox News White Supremacists: https://www.thenation.com/article/world/azov-battalion-neo-nazi/ Azov’s tactics and ideology were exactly what you’d expect from a paramilitary element formed by neo-Nazis. Its insignia features popular neo-Nazi symbols: the Wolfsangel (a runic double hook) and the Sonnenrad (sun wheel). Since then, the unit has become infamous for torture and for its aggressive recruitment of white supremacists from around the globe. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/3/1/who-are-the-azov-regiment The unit was initially formed as a volunteer group in May 2014 out of the ultra-nationalist Patriot of Ukraine gang, and the neo-Nazi Social National Assembly (SNA) group. Both groups engaged in xenophobic and neo-Nazi ideals and physically assaulted migrants, the Roma community and people opposing their views. https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2022/10/un-commission-has-found-array-war-crimes-violations-human-rights-and Ukrainian forces have also committed international humanitarian law violations in some cases, including two incidents that qualify as war crimes. https://www.newsweek.com/evidence-war-crimes-committed-ukrainian-nationalist-volunteers-grows-269604 Ukrainian Nationalist Volunteers Committing 'ISIS-Style' War Crimes https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2014/09/ukraine-must-stop-ongoing-abuses-and-war-crimes-pro-ukrainian-volunteer-forces/ History is being scrubbed of info about the Azovs and their Nazi ties, but the info is still out there: For seven years, Western institutions have warned about Ukraine’s Azov Movement, which began as a neo-Nazi paramilitary group in 2014 and became notorious for its worldwide recruitment of extremists. Then came Russia’s invasion. Within months, Azov fighters were being feted in Congress and at Stanford University. MSNBC swooned over a Ukrainian soldier whose Twitter account overflowed with neo-Nazi images. Facebook made the stunning decision to allow posts praising the Azov Battalion, even though the company admitted that it was a hate group. This overnight normalization of white supremacy was possible because Western institutions, driven by a zeal to ignore anything negative about our Ukrainian allies, decided that a neo-Nazi military formation in a war-torn nation had suddenly and miraculously stopped being neo-Nazi.

The polls are showing they're having second thoughts about sharing the Conservative Big Tent with the Freaker's Ball of COVID authoritarianism nuts, climate change-is-a-hoax quacks, MSM conspiracy goofs, and now MAGA Canadians who apparently think joining the likes of North Korea in our alignment with Trump's Axis is a good idea. 27. Trump's already talking about making Canada the 51st state and we're not even close to forming a defensive alliance with China. What's worse is that the Dems and their alt-left MSM in the US, who see the shade of Trump's toast and the colour of his tie as valid reasons to shriek insults about him, can't find fault with him calling our PM a governor. Isn't that a bit unnerving? Trump: "Please pop my toast before it starts smoking." MSM: "OMG HE'S A RACIST!!!!" Trump: "Trudeau is just a governor, and Canada is our 51st state." MSM: "Is Elon Musk trying to show he's in control of the country by bringing his kid into the Oval Office?" That's just you still trying to pretend that this isn't a proxy war. The US ousted the Ukrainian president - who was elected on a campaign that focused on neutrality towards Russia - decided who was allowed to run for president and who wasn't, put Zelensky and their own chosen prosecutor in power, openly stated that Ukraine should be in NATO, then gave Ukraine hundreds of billions of dollars worth of weapons to kill Russian soldiers with. This absolutely is a prototypical proxy war, regardless of whether you want to admit it or not. If you look up 'proxy war' in the dictionary you'll see a picture of Biden and Zelensky holding hands there.

  29. it would be inappropriate for anyone including republicans never mind democrats to discuss negotiations while the government is in the process of finalizing a deal on something like that. But it doesn't sound like there were any significant conversations that likely would have changed anyone's mind. This went off the rails because two strong-willed people but it heads and trump somehow managed to lose control of the situation in his own white house which is thoroughly embarrassing. Of course it was egged on by trump's recent statements that zelensky is a dictator and so on and so forth as well which doesn't help these negotiations At this point both of them should appoint someone to complete the negotiations, hammer things out and I get it signed quietly. Then once it's signed they can both get together shake hands and wave it around if they want.

  30. The completely erratic way Trump is handling the tariff file just shows how absolutely unfit for office he is. The reason for tariffs keeps changing The deadline for the tariffs keeps changing with hardly any explanation Lies, more lies and not a shred of evidence or fact to support anything they’ve claimed Oh and surprise the 10% tariff recently implemented against China last month is going up by another 10% effective immediately. Just because. Now even the amount of the tariffs against Canada and Mexico are up in the air, 48 hours from the most recently announced deadline The latest message from the White House is that the orange emperor will decree a tariff amount that day based on his mood and his fancies and there may be different amounts for different products if that’s what happens to please him in the moment It’s clear they have absolutely no clue what they’re doing or dealing with and policy affecting billions of dollars is based on nothing except Trump’s unpredictable whims and zero knowledge or serious consideration. Its not even imperial rule-by-decree, its rule-by-erratic whim. This is toxic for anyone trying to do business in the US. Imagine you are a US business that has imports or exports somewhere in your supply or distribution chains, you can’t make investments or manage risks when nobody has any fukin clue what might happen or when. Uncertainty and instability are worse for business than any tax-and-spend big government liberal regime has ever been. Trump has already alienated every country except Russia and North Korea. He even managed to make enemies of the Canadian conservative party and the Canadian business community, both of whom are naturally deferential to and reverential of the US by default, with conservatives especially loyal to republicans. It takes a special kind of incompetence for Trump to have screwed that up for no real reason. And it’s barely been a month. The real shitshow hasn’t even started yet

  33. What good is signing away your most valuable resource to someone who’s going to let you die anyway and is likely in cahoots with your killer? The so-called “economic partnership” proposed by Trump was a precondition Ukraine had to agree to without Trump providing any guarantees in return. And Teump won’t explain why he won’t give a security guarantee. It’s like a Nigerian Prince scam: hand over your assets now and hope you’ll get something in return at a later date. And it’s not for nothing that many have noted most of Ukraine’s critical minerals are in or very near Russian-held territory so it may be that Trump has plans to develop it with Russia not Ukraine if its signed over to him.

  39. One of the narratives I see from the CBC lately (and others) that I find kind of comical is this one about how Pierre Poilievre is pivoting on his message. It's very ironic, because even though Pierre has to change campaign tactics somewhat, it's quite literally the Liberals who are doing the full 180s on policies themselves. Why is it a news story that Pierre Poilievre might have to change messaging from this simply being a carbon tax election when it is the Liberals who have actually changed (or are pretending to change) their position on it?

  40. Yes and the CBC has become the propaganda arm of activist causes that don’t align with what most Canadians would consider fair. I thought that the attack on Buffy Saint Marie was another example of cancellation by presumption. Someone who brought attention to Indigenous cultures and mistreatment was deemed a pretendian and publicly ruined. All on the basis of some contestable accounts and opinions. How many others has the CBC destroyed? It’s more than Don Cherry.
