You wouldn’t have said that in 1939 to Churchill would you? You don’t say that about Israel do you? Surrendering to an invader and ceding territory isn’t peace. If you’re so into peace why don’t you just want Russia to go home? That would bring instant peace, same day. Much faster than negotiating ceasefire and minerals and territorial concessions.3 points

I'm in for a a couple reasons, one is that for me the CBC is like a touch stone - it's made the relative merits of the concept of being Canadian obvious. Growing up watching CBC on our black and white rabbit-eared TV, listening to a crackling CBC signal late at night drifting far offshore after a days fishing or stoking the fire by oil lamp in a cabin in the middle of boonies the CBC just made it better. But there's nostalgia and then there's practicality. I see an important role and value in having a well funded public broadcaster to provide a public owned perspective as opposed to a corporate owned and dominated media. A publicly owned source of information is an entirely appropriate counterweight to that. And finally, if there was ever a calamitous event that cut Canadians off from one another a public broadcaster would probably make recovering from it easier.3 points

A ceasefire without guarantees is just an opportunity for Putin to build up for a new assault. Trump doesn't give a rats ass about Ukrainian lives, all he cares about is how much he can extort from Ukraine before he hands it over to the Russians.3 points

Trump's abuse of Zelensky has finally woken Europe up. Yes Starmer says the US must be part of it but it is a giant up yours when it comes to a Trump and Putin show. The message to Trump is, Europe will be involved in any peace talks and so will Ukraine, otherwise Europe will continue to increase support for Ukraine.2 points

Again: would the US invade Canada if we were saying that we were going to sign a "defence" pact with Russia, China, Iran and NoKo? The answer is "OH HELL YEAH!" Never forget that. The US didn't make "them" do it. They got Zelensky to do it. Biden & Co dangled the carrot of "You get to end up being the bigshot who stood up to Russia and won the seemingly impossible fight, and you'll be rich", and Zelensky fell for it like a leftard cultist watching CNN. Now the rug has just been pulled out from under him. Trump's not playing that game. Whether this was planned among the GOP and Dems - ie Trump along with Biden's handlers - is pure speculation. Maybe Trump just arrived on the scene and saw an opportunity to steal more than just Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Gaza. Either way, if Trump gets his way, at the end of the day... The US gets: a bunch of valuable minerals, like $500B worth they got to see a bunch of Russians get killed they got to raise the value of the weapons that they sell abroad the Russians' weapons that compete with theirs lost value no US soldiers died Ukraine gets: generational trauma the loss of 30,000 sq km the loss of Crimea, about 10,000 sq km more the loss of $500B worth of minerals to the US the loss of all the oil and minerals and agriculture and manufacturing in Eastern Ukraine tens of thousands of dead men, women and children hundreds of thousands of amputees, burn victims, blind and deaf Russia gets: tens of thousands of dead soldiers they used up a lot of old munitions and tanks they lost some modern weapons, munitions and vehicles the weapons they sell abroad lost value they get Crimea and all the oil resources it has access to they get the smoking hole formerly known as the Donbas and all the natural resources there Zelensky gets: to look like a stooge gobs of money that ordinary Ukrainians won't touch in twenty generations a dose of Polonium at some point. Peons like us get to fight about who got what and why in political forums. None of us really know. None of us have the real answers (aside from when we just saw mom and dad fighting in the WH) so none of us are right. But we're still alive, and we still dislike the other side.2 points

Fvck off with you proxy wall bullsh!t, The Ukrainian people are fighting for their existence as a country and all you do is show contempt for them and support the criminal who is trying to take their country. There are no western troops fighting in Ukraine but there have been North Korean troops fighting with Russia for some time but I guess you are a big fan of Fat Kim as well.1 point

Clearly Zelenskyy has GAINED credibility by standing up to Trump and Putin. That's why the Europeans are in HIS CORNER. Duh Ceasefire is NOT peace and Zelenskyy knows that, unlike YOU.1 point

You should follow Proverbs 17:28. The House passed a budget. The Senate will make changes and pass their budget. Then, they will go through a process of reconciliation and send the resulting budget to the POTUS.1 point

The message is crystal: "We're done with this war. Come back when you're serious about peace." Trump literally told Zelensky: "Come back when you're serious about peace."1 point

Good point. At the very least, I think Trump understands that any further escalations with Russia is an absolutely idi*tic course of action. Probably why he said this of Biden's helping Ukraine to bomb Russia: Trump says it was 'st*pid' for Biden to let Ukraine use US weapons to strike deeper into Russia | Yahoo News I did some digging and found that missiles were still being launched at Russia in January and early February, but it's my hope that this has finally stopped now that Trump and Putin have talked.1 point

You mean like when we had capital punishment? Yes it's quite true that the government can pass a law making it legal to kill somebody. It is also true if you didn't like that then you should vote for somebody who wasn't going to do that. I'm glad to see you have managed to achieve a grade two level of understanding with regards to our political process after all these years Well sorry but it is. Want something becomes established as normal and acceptable behavior within our system becomes entrenched and that is perfectly valid. Our system relies on a certain level of consistency in order for it to function. if you want things like that to change then guess what..... You the voter needs to propose that to a political party and get them to accept it and then vote them into power you remember, that thing you said you didn't believe in. Elections1 point

PP does not want to shut down CBC, just defund it...and when it is laying off employees and then giving out big execs bonuses, which may or may not be taxpayer funded, thats where i draw the line...Like any media group they should be able to stand on their own feet, if not cut staff or services until it can...it is what every other business does in this country does...they thrive or disappear....1 point

You are a liar and a fool. Full stop. Hundreds of churches were not firebombed--let alone by "woke lunatics" during the Biden administration. And anyone caught for burning a church was absolutely prosecuted. And none of it is relevant, because the law prohibits harassment of people accessing churches or medical care. Nothing about firebombing whatsoever. Jeebus.1 point

Hey dumbass as Zelensky pointed out Putin has already violated multiple ceasefires since his invasion started in 2014 so why should Ukraine sign away its critical mineral rights to Trump just to get another empty promise that Trump wont even guarantee? A ceasefire isn’t a peace treaty1 point

I've discussed his many, many character flaws previously. I've even asked just what positive character trait this person has because I can't think of one. But his personal flaws are not really my issue. It is his incompetence, stupidity, and gullibility on the international stage that is. You don't need to 'negotiate' to run away. Which was basically what he did. He told them to please stop shooting at Americans and promised to go away and leave Afghanistan to them. It was a surrender. And he got nothing in exchange except the right to flee in peace. You mean like he did with Zelensky? Bullies always offend me. But that, like his many character flaws, is not the point. What did it do for America? Well, it outraged all of Europe and roused anti-Americanism from Norway to Italy, not just on the part of governments but ordinary people. Came across a piece last night about some Norwegian company which had cut ties with the US navy, saying they would henceforth no longer agree to fuel American warships that came into port. It's a small thing, but you can bet that attitude has exploded across Europe. There'll be many public, but more private boycotts of American goods and companies. No European government likes the US right now. What about Asia? You think places like China, Singapore, South Korea, and Japan, where 'face' is so important, will have the slightest respect for this administration? No. In the rest of Asia, countries that were American allies will be looking elsewhere now, since Trump has made it clear America owes no loyalty to anyone and will cut them off at the knees on any pretext. Halting nuclear proliferation has been an important American policy for seventy five years. I've read rumors that a number of countries are now considering building their own nukes since there's no way they want to rely on America as a deterrent against their enemies now. Especially places like South Korea and Japan. Hell, I've heard people in Canada suggesting it. So I think we can expect nuclear proliferation over the coming few years as countries scramble to build their own nuclear deterrent. That will make it harder and harder to keep nukes out of the hands of places like Iran. I mean, how can the world even object when nuclear-armed countries pop up across Europe and Asia among America's former allies? Countries that had been keeping their distance from China will now be turning to China as a balance against America's madman, and both Chinese and Russian influence will continue to spread through Africa, where the US has now been all but shut out, while China continues to grow its influence in South America. The risk is that America is reduced to a loud, swaggering, sneering, sulking, ignorant, no-class bully raging at the world around it as Trump turns his anger against his domestic enemies.1 point

Living under Russian rule is a catastrophe that Ukrainians have been willing to die to avoid. They understand what it means far better than we do and it’s for future generations that this war is being fought. Putin knows this as well. The prospect of Eastern Slavs living free, prosperous lives in the EU would be a constant rebuke to his ramshackle tyranny.1 point

It's like they all took a stupid pill and some took three. It will take decades for the US to recover its international reputation if at all because no one will trust them not to elect another Trump.1 point

The CBC has always been a little left leaning but in the last 15 to 20 years or so it has become progressively (ha!) worse. For me I think it really culminated with their attack on Daniel Smith during that election. They plastered their papers with stories how an unnamed source said she broke the law with an email absolutely guaranteed no chance of an error, the government looked into it and hired a third party to verify that it never happened, they came back and said it never happened, and the CBC still dug him and insisted it was absolutely true and she was guilty of a criminal offense without providing a source . Then when the election was over they admitted that the whole thing had been made up, they've never seen an email or had any reason to believe it existed and still refused to name this alleged source that was beyond question. They apologized for their misconduct but the election was over. In short they absolutely lied in order to try and keep a conservative out of power in Alberta because that's what they wanted. And they knew they could get away with it. There is no recovering from that kind of thing. If it was a one-off we could dismiss it as being a couple of rogue journalists and a sorry lack of attention from their editor but there are dozens and dozens of other examples. And that doesn't include the omissions, stories about the liberals that either get no airtime or grossly reduced airtime because they don't flatter their party of choice1 point

Take a look at what the cartels do to their own people. They will not be deterred by stiffer sentences. Drugs will be supplied as long as people are willing to pay for them, and the more we criminalize an activity the more the hardcore paramilitary gangs will control the market.1 point
