I think China played Russia, TBH. Both countries agreed that they'd be Switzerland if the other attacked Taiwan/Ukraine, and I think that Russia expected China to move ahead, just as they did themselves. Instead, China held back, and now they're "sitting on a hill, watching two tigers fight". Socializing community values has always been a part of schooling. Patriotic lessons, events such as Remembrance Day and good morals and civics are not a problem but when values change, those that hold traditional values are often left behind.
