  1. she was the head of state for 70 years and she handled those duties gracefully I can think of no one who could have done a better job in her place

  2. You have a lot to learn about the history of democracy. Alfred, who is often regarded as the first King of England, made peace with the Vikings and unified the English, providing a form of representative government. The Magna Carta established the necessity to consult with representatives in 1215. After that we see a succession of increasingly democratic moves in Britain that are only rivaled in liberty by some Italian cities that had their own charters. What’s especially remarkable is that in modern history of the last few hundred years, Britain avoided a painful domestic revolution, civil war, invasion, and has stood up against oppressive foreign powers. It’s a great legacy. It’s at the foundation of Canada as a bicultural bilingual country with freedoms that were paralleled only by the US and some smaller European states. Slavery was outlawed in the British Empire in 1832 though it persisted in the US. It may not mean much to you, but Elizabeth 2 has been an honourable face for this legacy. She put duty above personal inclination through many challenging times and worked with 15 PM’s over 70 years in Britain alone. She has had rotten food thrown at her on parade in New Zealand and talked down someone with a weapon who had broken into her residence. She never wavered. Charles 3 may have more weaknesses, but he also has many strengths and I’m sure will take the role seriously.

  3. This is mostly incorrect. The King does have authority, but no political power. That has been the case since King George I in the early 1700's. They have wealth because Prince Albert was alarmed that Queen Victoria had almost no personal wealth. He was an astute business man who invested what little was left, in real estate. That is the source of the Kings's personal income. Privilege is a reflection of the fact that he is King, but as a constitutional Monarch, he is bound by the laws of the realm. If we did not have a King, we would need to replace him with something else. Under the late Queen's reign, the Royal Family cost the British taxpayer less than the British Embassy in Paris and a good deal less than having a President. It cost Canadians nothing other than the salary of the Governor General. If Canada suddenly lost our collective mind and did abolish the monarchy, what would we replace it with? Do we want the symbol of our country to be a politician like Trump, or Biden ? I can think of nothing worse than a bland colourless politician being the personification of Canada. Canada has been a monarchy since the first French settlements in 1609. Before that, my knowledge of First nations is woefully lacking, but I am led to believe that some of them have had Hereditary Chiefs. I am sure some of you will correct me. But since 1609, Canada has been a monarchy. It is part of what Canada is. Losing it would have a profound negative impact on who we are. I believe our new King will be a very good symbol of Canada. If I am wrong, in 30 years we will have a new King. We have had a few poor Kings ( maybe 6 out of 43) in the past 1000 years, though only one (and a bit) in Canada. King George IV's personal life was a mess, but his reign was generally good. Edward VIII would have been a poor King, but Mrs. Simpson fixed that. He never wanted the job in the first place and she was his escape route. The Americans can't compete with that record. Presidents do not have a great track record. The Russian Republic has gone pear shaped. The Israeli prsidents have had issues. Austria elected a former SS officer. The French traditionally hate their Presidents as do the Americans. Germany has finally seemed to have become the exception. But look at the top countries with a good quality of life, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Japan, New Zealand, and yes, even Canada. All are Constitutional Monarchies. Wow, what a blow hard. I just had to get it off my chest.

  4. Read Winston Churchill’s 5 volume History of the English Speaking Peoples. Our institutions were forged through centuries of war, revolution, counter-revolution, invasion, trade, settlement… The Crown going back over 1200 years to Alfred represents continuity of the legacy that has given us much of what we value about modern civilization. It’s a hybrid of the Roman administration and the northern popular assembly. The system has worked very well, and I certainly value those influences over China and the UN.

  8. Spare me your woke whine about privilege. Anyone who lives in the West in this day and age is privileged above almost all people the world has ever seen. Your real complaint is you're a nobody with no accomplishments in life and nobody cares about you. You're jealous of the outpouring of respect for a woman who took on a job with enormous responsibilities and impressed the world with her dignity, wisdom, and sense of duty for longer than almost anyone else has been alive. And your jealousy lies in the fact that when you die nobody is going to take notice or give a damn. Even if you didn't care it takes a real charmer to be yelling insults at the death of someone many others did care about.

  9. the GG is a partisan crony of the PM that is not a better head of state than an apolitical monarch your anti-monarchist position is not based in reason, but based on feelings it has nothing to do with how well they do the job or how well an alternative would do the job

  13. Elizabeth II ascended to the title while still of the age most people today are just leaving college. She is the last of the world leaders from "The Greatest Generation" and lived a life dedicated to and restricted by duty and responsibility. She sailed majestically through all the chaos, wars, political drama, family crisis, social change, and the rise and fall of nations. And she did it in a restrained, thoughtful and dignified manner almost completely at odds with what we see of most world leaders today. RIP to her. And God bless the King.

  14. Regardless of anyones views, King Charles will be our king for life. Australia, or Britain could abolish the monarchy but the Canadian Constitution has locked the Crown in place so deeply, we will likely be a Constitutional Monarchy until the end of time.

  18. 4 million Americans out of work due to long Covid. This costs the US around $170 billion per year. 24% of people who've had Covid suffer from long Covid. This may sound unbelievably high, but it is not inconsistent with the experiences of comparable economies. For example, a Bank of England representative recently stated that labor force participation has dropped by around 1.3% across the entire 16- to 64-year-old population (not just those who are working), and that the majority of that impact is from the rise in long-term sickness—which he suspected was long Covid. Meanwhile, one-quarter of U.K. companies cite long Covid as one of the main causes of long-term staff absence. "Using the average U.S. wage of $1,106 per week, the estimated 3 million people out of work due to long Covid translates to $168 billion a year in lost earnings. This is nearly 1% of the total U.S. gross domestic product. If the true number of people out of work is closer to 4 million, that is a $230 billion cost. "

  19. Satire from The Borowitz Report Putin Says He Is Losing War in Ukraine Because F.B.I. Seized Stuff He Needed MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—Amid reports that the Russian front has collapsed near Kharkiv, Vladimir Putin complained that the only reason he is losing the war in Ukraine is that the F.B.I. recently seized stuff he needed. “I’m not going to go into detail, but there were things I needed, very important things, that the F.B.I. has confiscated that should have been sent to me,” the Russian President said. “If I had those things right now, I wouldn’t be getting my ass kicked all over Kharkiv.” The fact that materials intended for him are in the hands of the F.B.I. has made him question “whether America is really a democracy,” he said. “I think if you pay for something—and I mean pay in cash—it should be sent to you,” he said. “Hopefully the special master will straighten all this out.” https://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/putin-says-he-is-losing-war-in-ukraine-because-fbi-seized-stuff-he-needed ?

  20. I’ve been trying to find anything on the French study, it’s amazing how things get wiped off the internet. I’m pretty sure the answer to your question is over 90%, but I can’t find it now… Here’s another study, similar results: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmed.2021.668995/full Our monocentric study shows that the rate of daily smokers is significantly lower amongst the patients with symptomatic COVID-19 compared to the French population. This was regardless of the patients' admission status. The SIRs of daily smokers in the outpatients and inpatients groups were identical at 0.24 [0.12–0.48] and 0.24 [0.14–0.40], respectively, which is 76% lower than that of the French population (after adjusting for age and gender).

  22. Simply not true. The rally was organized by white supremacists. They lost $26 million in a lawsuit afterwards. They called themselves “pro-white activists” and were protesting, among other things, a proposal to remove pro-slavery Civil War insurrectionist Robert Lee. The rally attracted hundreds and hundreds of Proud Boys, Nazis and KKK members. They were not a small minority, they were the organizers and key members. There weren’t a bunch of cheery nice non-racists who wanted to preserve the racist statue. Again, all we need to do is look at the rally’s purpose: Preserve a statue of a white supremacist who waged a massive war against the United States.

This guy was fired of U of California because he didn't want the inoculations, as he already had natural immunity from a previous infection. At the time of his lawsuit, the CDC was refusing to recognize natural immunity, mush the same as Canada is still currently refusing to acknowledge it. But now the CDC admits there IS such a thing as natural immunity to covid. And his final bit of advice:

  32. Just curious why is this story the straw that made you realize just how reckless the liberals have been with spending. I mean in just the pandemic years he spent well over 650 bil dollars, not to mention his yearly deficits over 8 years i don't know about you but that got my attention pretty early. Not sure where they got their figure of the age public service worker making more than 100 k or more, unless they are talking about those working directly with the government in Ottawa. I worked for them for 34 years in the military and 5 years as a civilian worker, and made not even close to those numbers and most years not even 1/2 of that. In any case those workers do pay taxes as well, and in the military's case with a lot less rights than the average Canadian and they make a lot less than average of 100 k a year... Anyways i glad you have come to this conclusion now rather than later, i wish more people would see it for what it is.

Early on, he used to call reporters masquerading as his own publicist named John Barron or John Miller. Those were some of his EARLIEST LIES. You've been CONNED.

  36. Yeah, you can insult me, but I do not care about this either; as you can see I can insult myself no problem. The only way to get me is for you to provide some logical arguments, tell me why I should be sad, or what grand achievements the Queen accomplished. I heard the following mentions: - how many thousands of pieces of mail she handled (achievement??) - how many trips she made in her 70 years on the throne (achievement??) - how many countries she had visited (achievement??) -how she served 70 years while a typical police officer retired after only 20 years!!! This last comparison could make me laugh. You compare the years of service of officers who are risking their lives daily in armed confrontations with the dregs of our society with years of Royal Visits around the world - all smiles, best foods, best health care, best everything for you. Oh my! Another proof of how media manipulates us daily. But you listen to them. Keep your handkerchief handy to wipe those tears of sadness when they tell you to. Then roll up your sleeve to take the 10th booster shot when they ask.

Patrick Colbeck claims that “none of the constraints that they’re putting on this are legal.” His co-host, GOP county chairwoman Cheryl Costantino, advises the workers to “just hide” their cell phones, and to “hide a small pad and a small pen or something like that because you need to take accurate notes.” Costantino dismissed concerns from attendees that they’d be thrown out or removed from their posts for breaking the rules. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/michigan-gop-encourages-poll-workers-break-rules-leaked-video-1234588705/

You'd expect the BBC to be all over this story, and Canadian news channels. But it was basically full time on Euronews, the DW (Germany), France's overseas news net, and even Al Jazeera. Almost everyone in the West has known her as a steady, unwavering political background for most of our lives.

It's a little beyond expressing doubt, and to downplay it as such is to be divorced from reality. It was Trump supporters who initiated violence on the government on Jan 6. It's Trump supporters who create militias in backwoods to fight against government. It was Trump supporters who carried Nazi flags in Charlottesville. Who is prepping for civil war? Trump supporters, not the right, not the left.
