And just to close the book on this, the cases against Comey and James by Trump’s unqualified hack prosecutor have been thrown out. It turns out that the prosecutor jobs usually performed by the top criminal lawyers in the country can’t be filled by random MAGA twits with zero criminal law experience who make serious procedural errors. Who knew? What’s funny is how the MAGAs rant about “qualifications” and “merit” when it comes to unfounded accusations about DEI etc but then will gladly hire any unqualified slob based on their devotion to Dear Leader.3 points

Agreed, the two issues are completely separate and using one to dismiss the other is horrible. Even if crime is down and improving, there can still be a flaw in the system that allows crimes that could be prevented and should be addressed. But the liberal solution is always to avoid dealing with it. IF crime is down they would argue as above "Hey, overall crime is down, why don't you focus on the big picture!!" And if crime is getting worse (as it is) then it's "we can't be solving this on a case by case basis, we have to look at the root causes and try to address the big picture." And the big picture is always we need to let them out of jail and spend more money on social programs. Meanwhile the 'big picture' doesn't mean much to the poor woman who's emotionally scarred for life and will never be the same again after the attack.3 points

What a monstrous position to take. This crap is happening daily. And no matter what your Libbie rags tell you, crime is not down.3 points

Read my post again. You don’t want to talk about either this crime or the statistics. You throw statistics out so you can dismiss this, ignore it, and obfuscate. You don’t need statistics to simply look at this issue, analyze it, and understand it what went wrong. I have played this dumb game with you before, I have explained it to you before, and you don’t engage. Your position isn’t logical, it’s a dishonest tactic to avoid having to discuss the issue. If one person dies on a construction site, gets run over by a dump truck backing up, because the back up alarm wasn’t working, we don’t need to sit around saying we can’t care about this, because statistics! Sorry, until about 1,000 more people die from failed backup alarms, can’t talk about this!3 points

Manufacturing-Consent_Final.pdf From the report: The report details how the Impact and Innovation Unit (IIU) in Ottawa is increasingly using sophisticated behavioural psychology, such as “nudge theory,” and other message-testing tools to influence the behaviour of Canadians. Modelled after the United Kingdom’s Behavioural Insights Team, the IIU was originally presented as an innocuous “innovation hub.” In practice, the report argues, it has become a mechanism for engineering public opinion to support government priorities. With the arrival of Covid, the report explains, the IIU’s role expanded dramatically. Internal government documents reveal how the IIU worked alongside the Public Health Agency of Canada to test and design a national communications strategy aimed at increasing compliance with federal vaccination and other public health directives. Among these strategies, the government tested fictitious news reports on thousands of Canadians to see how different emotional triggers would help reduce public anxiety about emerging reports of adverse events following immunization. These tactics were designed to help achieve at least 70 percent vaccination uptake, the target officials associated with reaching “herd immunity.” IIU techniques included emotional framing—using fear, reassurance, or urgency to influence compliance with policies such as lockdowns, mask mandates, and vaccine requirements. The government also used message manipulation by emphasizing or omitting details to shape how Canadians interpreted adverse events after taking the Covid vaccine to make them appear less serious. The report further explains that the government adopted its core vaccine message—“safe and effective”—before conclusive clinical or real-world data even existed. The government then continued promoting that message despite early reports of adverse reactions to the injections. The report urges: Parliamentary oversight of all behavioural science uses within federal departments, ensuring elected representatives retain oversight of national policy. Public disclosure of all behavioural research conducted with taxpayer funds, creating transparency of government influence on Canadians’ beliefs and decisions. Independent ethical review of any behavioural interventions affecting public opinion or individual autonomy, ensuring accountability and informed consent.2 points

Well, it’s just an incredibly awful response on so many levels. Like, what is he saying here, that if crime is down overall, we shouldn’t care if crazy criminals are still left roaming the streets killing and brutally raping/attacking women on the subway? like, sorry, sorry we let this guy go and don’t care that he was arrested 70 times and beats up women and gets right back out, but here look at the stats, you can see crime is down 1% this year!2 points

As I’ve been saying for months, PP is the new Jagmeet Singh and is going to prop up the Carney government for now. The only thing I got wrong was that I underestimated the extent of the theatrics and smoke and mirror shenanigans they would go through to maintain plausible deniability. I thought the conservatives would actually have no choice but to vote in favour. But the games are amusing2 points

Holy shit you are one of the most fundamentally dishonest people on this forum. We don’t need universal healthcare to lock criminals up or to lock up the criminally insane or to commit people involuntarily. This has absolutely nothing to do with universal healthcare. The fact that you are making my excuses for this man being in the street to beat women up and victimize women is the problem. People like you are why this man is a problem. You don’t care.2 points

Canada must absolutely go with the F35s. As has been mentioned previously, the F35s are the best of the best. When leaders like Putin and Xi Jinping decide to infringe on our Arctic sovereignty, AND THEY WILL, we will need to scare them out and away with our capabilities. The Gripens may not be enough to do so. But they are 100% scared of F35s. We need to show them us landing F35s in Iqaluit and Alert, and show them we are there, and strong. Can a Gripen land in places like that? I doubt it. F35s can. The purpose of a fighter jet is to defend the state it belongs to. A Gripens deal may be a better for the Canadian economy, but what good is an economy if its nation-state is susceptible to invasion? With the F35s there will be no risk of that. I hope the F35s deal can be amended to allow us full right-to-repair and technological control and sovereignty over the aircraft.2 points

It is absolutely insanely hilarious that has their final last-ditch attempts the liberal supporters are attempting to suggest that all of the problems that Canada face are because the conservatives pointed it out. Like, if we had just kept our mouths shut none of this terrible stuff that is a direct result of liberal policy would be happening. The sad reality is there's not a lot of good things to point to when it comes to Canada right now. The liberals have essentially eroded almost every aspect of our society be it economic, food security, housing security, Down to even how close we are as a nation. It is a sad truth that trump did more for Canadian Unity than the liberals have in the last 11 years, and even that only lasted briefly. But of course, none of that would be true if I hadn't just mentioned it. It's all my fault because I brought it up, otherwise we'd be fine2 points

America's industrial capacity dwarfs Sweden's, and until the planes actually arrive in Canada, all we're talking about is "What fighter planes will they be able to give us in 3-8 years?" If anything major happens within that time frame, it's not unlikely that Sweden or the US would say "These aren't available for sale abroad right now because we need them ourselves." (I'm pretty sure that we reneged on a deal to give the Saudis some armoured vehicles at one point recently) America's larger standing air force and greater capacity means that they might be able to spare at least a few aircraft or increase production more dramatically than Sweden can. Also, 1) America's planes are more battle-tested, and real-world effectiveness is light years past theoretical effectiveness, plus 2) any new systems that are built by American contractors like Raytheon, etc, to upgrade fighter planes' capabilities, will be designed so that the first iteration of that system fits the F-35. It will probably require some re-sizing or tinkering to implement that same system on other NATO fighters. It seems like an afterthought right now, but the F-18s that we currently have were upgraded many times over their decades of service, and no doubt the next batch of fighters we get will have to last us 40 more years. The easier, cheaper and quicker it is to update them, the better. A last addition to that thought, any shortcomings that develop over the next few years with the F-35's capabilities, as adversarial aircraft, weapons systems, detection systems, etc grow stronger, will probably be brought to light sooner because they will be in action more than the Grippens - America's nose is always in something, Sweden's, not so much. If Grippens don't see a lot of battle, it could take them longer to find out which ways they're lacking, so upgrading them might lag by a generation. It only takes one chink in the armour to bring down a plane, or squadron, and we can't afford that.1 point

If the Grippen is better on all fronts, why do you think the Canadian military wants the F-35s?1 point

The only strong opinion I have on this is the trust issue. The next time Ambassador Hoekstra speaks about the F-35 and why we have no choice in the matter he should be just as bluntly confronted by somebody present on the credibility problem which has arisen between us and the US that is not of our making. One other opinion: let’s make our mind up soon and carry it through. Ditto all the other equipment we need to defend this country. All the major political parties should make such matters above politics and publicly support whatever decisions are advised by the experts. We have had too many political footballs along the way in defence procurement.1 point

Obfuscation is Mike's specialty He's always posting things that strongly suggest his opinion, but leave him enough wiggle room to pretend that's not necessarily his opinion later when he gets called on it. Mike- "It could be said that trans people have every right to use whatever bathroom they want even if it puts women at risk". Everyone else " that's terrible, putting women at risk is wrong! You're terrible!" Mike: Hey, i didn't say -I- felt that way, i just noted it could be said by someone. Why are we even talking about this?1 point

A few days ago Trump said: ""I threw him out of my club many years ago because I thought he was a sick pervert.". He 'threw him out' in 2007. So he knew what Epstein was doing but did nothing about it? Didn't contact the police, let the abuse go on. Just on emore reason why Trump should be in jail.1 point

Focusing on individual crimes is anti-system thinking, since we could be seeing huge drops in crime rates due to effective programs and yet a single egregious incident would cast doubt on how well we're doing. If we could get people to focus on the big picture, and de-focus on emotional responses to every single thing then we would get further ahead.1 point

Locking up the criminally insane is literal the only solution. There are 2 purposes of prison: rehabilitation and protection. We need to restore prison so that the public is protected.1 point

Mike Johnson said that, then recanted. Get your facts straight. You're naive enough to think Trump didn't know what he was poaching young girls for? "I hardly knew Epstein at all" / "I hardly knew Epstein": This phrase has been used by Trump more recently to downplay the extent of their friendship, particularly after Epstein's 2019 arrest on sex trafficking charges. You probably belive that too, despite the facts showing otherwise.1 point

F-35...everything else favors the F-35 a gen 5 aircraft with capabilities the Gripen could only dream off....it's sensors can spot enemy aircraft well beyond their own radar coverage, shooting first is a wining strategy and killing at distance is the F-35 domain...It has been battle tested by Israel and the US.... We only have 3 more years of trump....are we going to be that petty as to depriver our pilots defending this country by flying the best aircraft on the market right now....1 point

Can we still put our faith in the Americans after Trump, though? Would a President Vance be any easier on us? I would trust the Swedes ahead of the Americans at the moment. Apparently, the Gripen is a lot cheaper to keep in the air too? Not that I know the first thing about this.1 point

It’s pretty embarrassing for Conservatives. https://www.policymagazine.ca/how-pierre-poilievre-just-avoided-an-election-and-why-he-wanted-to/ Suddenly, there were Mr. Scheer and Mr. Reid. They were behind the curtains in the Opposition Lobby. Each claimed they were trying to vote remotely but could not get their apps to work, even though they were just a few feet away, out of sight of the Clerk’s desk. From their desks, they each then asked to be recorded as voting “No” — which they were allowed to do. Scheer and Reid wanted to vote against the budget. But it appears they were also their leader’s insurance policy. If Pierre Poilievre had wanted to actually defeat the budget, they would not have been hiding behind the curtains. Once the coast was clear and the budget had passed, they rushed out with their excuse and their votes.1 point

This did not end with covid. It continues today, I firmly believe we saw it in the last election when the Liberal party actually convinced a slim majority of Canadians that the Americans were going to invade us, and that Carney was our only hope. Polling prior to the election told the Libs that a lot of Canadians were fearful of Trump, so they played on that, hyped it up and that's all the MSM media talked about. FYI - The US Biden administration paid a PR firm (not a public health firm) nearly $1 billion dollars to psychologically manipulate the US public during covid. The UK gov't did the same thing. Why would they need PR departments and psychological manipulation if it were a real pandemic?1 point

Even the National Post is calling out the Conservative theatrics! Conservatives conspired to pass Carney’s budget is the headline! Ouch. https://nationalpost.com/opinion/opposition-mps-conspire-to-pass-carneys-disastrous-budget At least Green Leader Elizabeth May traded her support for something she cares about, a promise to meet our Paris Agreement targets. I expect she’s been had, in that the Liberals couldn’t do it if they even tried. But it beats the pseudo-sophistication of His Majesty’s official lack of Opposition faking opposition to the budget while sliding it through, scorning what is good for the country based on principle for a convoluted attempt to gauge what might conceivably be good for the party based on voters’ hypothetical distaste for having to exercise their stinking ballot.1 point
