A lot has been written about the Republican descent into madness over the past few years Spoiler alert: party members have few common ideals and are beholden to billionaires puppet masters Is the GOP still a legitimate political party? The answer should be self-evident Republicans' only unifying agenda is hate, fear and groveling to billionaires. They want to rule, but not govern … Neoliberalism was their uniting philosophy in 1980 and Reagan cemented that system into place with his presidency: It still controls most of the American political and economic system and dictates most modern Supreme Court decisions as well. But while most people don't generally recognize the word "neoliberalism," that system which includes offshoring jobs, massive tax cuts for the rich ("trickle-down"), privatization of government functions and gutting the social safety net has fallen out of favor among most voters. (See "The Hidden History of Neoliberalism: How Reaganism Gutted America.") This has left the GOP rudderless. Their persistent shout-outs to racists and homophobes — including efforts to ban books and the teaching of American history — have helped Republican politicians win primary elections, but have hurt Republicans electorally with their better-educated and higher income voters. Similarly, their embrace of Catholic anti-abortion doctrine has pushed away many formerly Republican female voters while failing to further energize or increase the numbers of the fringe that holds this issue with fanatic zeal. As a result, other than Sen. Rick Scott's proposals for ending Social Security and Medicare within five years and more calls for tax cuts, Republican politicians in state and federal office have been reduced to simply opposing everything Democrats do or want to do. …, This lack of a clear ideological foundation across the GOP has opened the door to: Predatory grifters (Mehmet Oz, Matt Gaetz, Rick Scott), Wannabe stars and fame-seekers (Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Ted Cruz) and Putin-style autocrats (Blake Masters, Doug Mastriano, Ron DeSantis). Donald Trump, filling all three categories simultaneously, predictably became the "King of the Thieves" in the GOP. ….. https://www.salon.com/2022/10/21/is-the-still-a-legitimate-political-party-the-answer-should-be-self-evident_partner/2 points

Back to the topic... I went to a massive Halloween light show in suburban Toronto last night. No diversity quotient required... Turbans, headscarves, and people of all cultures simply enjoying themselves. Pretty sweet to head out and have cheap fun with your family, and leave the drama of obsessive online fear-farming behind.2 points

https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/u-s-appeals-court-grants-injunction-temporary-blocking-bidens-student-loan-handout US appeals court temporarily blocks Biden's student loan handout The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with several Republican-led states For those here who do not understand this process... 1. Either private lenders or the Federal Government provides Student Loan (which personally, I would do away with in a New York minute, since all they do is make price gouging colleges rich and bid up the cost of tuition.) 2. The student has to pay that money back, maybe at graduation, certainly when the bill is due, even if the kid does not graduate. 3. Cancelling the loan means telling the lenders they will not be getting their money back. (And along those lines, the money lenders start using more aggressive underwriting techniques to limit loans to students who are honest enough to pay them back.) 4. Unelected Joe did NOT cancel those loans. He decided to use TAXPAYER MONEY (which has been borrowed so much that the taxpayers who will be funding this thing haven't been born yet) to pay those lenders back. He did this to buy votes from more idiots. 5. The 8th US Circuit Court Of Appeals has decided to block this egregious attempt to buy votes. Government paying off student loans is welfare to the rich.1 point

Disagree. Traditional conservatives are also for smaller (but big enough to do what's needed) government, as well as a strong national defense and national security. Unfortunately, we haven't had much work towards any of that lately out of conservative leadership - and that includes Harper, once the war was done. But there is a difference between making a careful assessment of the rising dangers of the world (and I accept they were not nearly as obvious in Harper's time) and buying nonsensical conspiracies. Traditional conservatives also see Russia as the enemy while too many on the "republican" side admire Putin for his 'strength'. I'm not going to accept putting temporary pandemic isolation and vaccination into the same category as national security or national defense. Therein lies the difference between conservatism and trumpist republicanism.1 point

Those who live downtown likely work downtown, so it's not as if they really need transportation to get around. At the time of the protests, downtown Ottawa was pretty much a ghost town anyway. Small businesses affected by the protest were able to claim up to $10000 from the federal gov't for losses. Less than 1/2 of the $20 million set aside by the government has been paid out. Protests as a rule do inconvenience a lot of people, but that's the price we all pay for living in a free and democratic nation. The question is .... where do you draw the line between the rights of protesters and those affected by the protests? If you can't bear the noise and inconvenience of protests maybe you should rethink about living so close to the parliament buildings.1 point

The political leaders responsible for this mess are tone deaf to what is going on. As I said before, the ignorance of voters is widespread and is corrupt from bottom to top. I would add in my view the Supreme Court, and other courts and many politicians are immoral and place the rights of a convicted criminals and accused ahead of the safety of citizens or society.1 point

Actually Beave I have "denounced" Russia's invasion. I've also "denounced" Ukraine's military answer to the original referendum. But hey...you only see what you want to see. Fact is...Ukraine did attack the ethnic Russians in the Eastern provinces and Russia did respond by invading Ukraine. Neither actions have been desirable. Today, however, the problem is, how can this be ended? I would like to see a diplomatic end. You would like to see an all out war. Tell me again... Who's the bloodthirsty puppet?1 point

What is fascism is the objections to democracy which bought Trump undone. It was him and his redneck nuts cases who orchestrated the j6 riots attempting to I stall a fascist regime with him at the head. You can't deny that. The democrats have stayed at arm's length from enquiries and Biden has not been consulted by the DOJ since it happened. It is their job to hold enquiries and subpoena people etc. Why shouldn't the first attempt of a coup in America history not be investigated? Where are these so-called patriots who busily hold their flags with their hands on the chests whilst belated about democracy. But Lord Trump gets upset about just that and the disease spreads like a virus amongst the blockheads and they don't like it. The investigation should continue until the bitter end and those responsible for any of it should be jailed, including democrats. It must never happen again under any circumstance regardless of who it is. If anyone reading this disagrees, you can move to North Korea if you like.1 point

Yup, a lot of evidence has been submitted, most of it was to point the finger at someone or some other department, over the last couple of days it is the Ottawa police department. Yes, Nazi flags where there, the question was who owned it? it has been said it was a local person. A women stood on the tomb for a few seconds, and then got down, seems like it is only a problem when they ( the government) want to make it one, that same tomb has been urinated on dozens of times, including someone taking a shit on it. But here is the rub, it did not make a big media hit like the women did. And really do you really think the majority of Canadians give a fiddlers f*** about the unknown soldier's tomb, no they don't, except when it can be used in their narrative. I know what the commission mandate is, but those references were put in there to prove that the liberal government has lied and has been deceitful before so what is different with this commission. Nothing really. It is nothing more than a media trap, to hold our attention for a couple of months, then we will be on to the next liberal screw up. And it does not make any difference to liberal voters, what he or the liberal government does they will always vote liberal...becasue we Canadians don't give a rat's ass about what these political parties do to Canada as long as they get their free stuff.1 point

Hey MH, why don't we see some of our lefty liberal western media hacks go into Russian held territory in the Ukraine and speak to the Russian soldiers and generals for a change? At least that way we could get both sides of the story and not just the one side of the story that you like to push and promote here. Your Zelensky is a corrupt Nazi himself. Live with it. I know that you like to knock and call some members here "know nothing Putin fans" as knowing nothing. But what makes Zelensky fans like you think that you are experts about what is really going on in the Ukraine? Are you on the ground there every day watching the fighting going on? I think that you know as much as I know MH about what is going on in Ukraine which is sweet phuk all. I sure would like to get Putin's side of the story, and not just the Zelensky side of the story at the time. To know one side of any story, is to know nothing at all. ?1 point

Did not the communist Bolsheviks do the same thing when they were allowed to take over Eastern Europe after the 2nd WW? The Russian communists annexed many countries into their sphere. A terrible end of life and liberty for the people of those countries. The Ukraine army just maybe full of Nazi's itself. The Ukraine has a battalion of neo Nazi's called Azov's. And what makes you believe that the Ukraine army is a professional army? How would you know this? Well?1 point

No, I've been a Conservative activist all my adult life. I am a retired Peace Officer. I believe in law and order. Does that make me a communist? What did you see in my post that could lead you to think I was a communist? Did I advocate the leaders of the occupation be taken out into the forest and shot? That is what a communist would do. Did I advocate the rest of the participants be shipped to a labour camp (gulag) in northern Saskatchewan, never to be heard from again? That's what a communist would do. Maybe you need to read some books by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Then get back to us about communism.1 point

Rupa Subramanya: Justin Trudeau's case against the Freedom Convoy falls on its face How are our elected officials who purvey what can only be called misinformation be held to account? It’s striking how many public officials, including outgoing Ottawa mayor Jim Watson, outgoing city councillor Mathieu Fleury, and would be mayor Catherine McKenney, made strong claims that the protesters were violent and destructive. For example, Watson claimed that protesters were ripping masks off local residents, but when challenged under cross examination, he admitted he didn’t see this himself but heard about it in media reports. This was a refrain from many of the public officials making these assertions about the protesters, and when challenged referred to hearing about it in the media. This was a classic case of the tail wagging the dog, as some media reports were largely parroting the narrative of the public officials without providing much if any documentary evidence. Without doubt, the most important witness to date has been Pat Morris, who is intelligence chief of the Ontario Provincial Police. If anyone would know if the protesters were dangerous, it would have to be Morris. However, in his testimony, he was very clear that the OPP had produced no intelligence that the protesters would be armed, describing much of the rhetoric around the protests as “hyperbole” and “sensationalized.” In its totality, his testimony shredded the idea that the Ottawa protesters were anything like the insurrectionists who stormed Capitol Hill in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021. Morris’s testimony also put paid to the notion that the protesters were an irrational and crazy fringe who had no good reason to be in Ottawa. On the contrary, he acknowledged the “multitude of grievances” of the protesters, whom he described as comprising of regular citizens with a “large degree of support” across the country. He saw them as group that was “organic” and “grassroots.” So much for Trudeau’s fringe minority of crazies. https://nationalpost.com/opinion/rupa-subramanya-justin-trudeaus-case-against-the-freedom-convoy-falls-on-its-face1 point

143 countries voted to condemn Russia's invasion, only five supported Russia and one of them was Russia.
