https://globalnews.ca/news/8492260/annual-surtax-homes-housing-inequality-report/ Homes over $1M will be taxed now "to help stall price increases" because the gov't says that they want to make home ownership easier for new/young Canadians. This is just a bullshit tax which will be a drain on the middle class, but will only cost Trudeau's wealthy buddies a pittance. Almost every single home in BC from West Vancouver to Abbotsford will be affected by this tax, but investors, who tie up affordable housing which young families could be purchasing, won't pay a single cent. If the gov't really wants to make home ownership a possibility then they need to put a premium on second, third, fourth, fifth dwelling units, etc. The way that this tax is set up, I can have two $900K condos, side by side, and 600 condos all across the country worth $500K each, and the new tax won't cost me a single penny, ever. I'd have over $300M in real estate, I'd be earning rent from 600 working families, and I could use my income from those 600 homes to buy several new condos every month, which just puts upward pressure on the cost of those homes. Trudeau's idiot fanbase will be sucked in by this. All of his welfare toadies will lap it up, thinking that it's a legitimate tax to help them out, in reality it doesn't do a thing for entry-level buyers.3 points

I want a libertarian. It’s not about left versus right anymore. Hell I used to be a member of the Liberal Party in the Chrétien era. They’re garbage now. Just an affiliate of the coastal Democrats and Xi’s Comm Party of China. They only know how to subsidize expensive identity politics pet projects, raise the cost of living, and shut down natural resource development. They’re destroying Canada. The Conservative Party of Canada isn’t measurably different. I just want the essentials from government, not directives on what to think and how to live, especially when I don’t even respect these people.3 points

Yesterday there was over a million Covid cases in the US, that we know of. Each day the provinces test new record numbers of Covid cases and we hunker down waiting for the other shoe to fall: a rapid rise in admissions to the ICU’s. Only it hasn’t quite worked out that way. Hospitalizations have risen but the stays are shorter and almost everyone who gets Omicron, representing about 95% of Covid cases, recovers within a week. The ICU’s have lost some capacity but aren’t anywhere near full on average (Ontario with 1100 ICU beds has about 270 in use). The bigger issue causing us to “slow the spread” by putting students back online and adding restrictions is the fact that we’re testing so many people who we’d never know were positive without the tests, people who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. Stop testing these people and they’d be working. The health workers administering the useless tests could actually help highly symptomatic patients. The time is here to focus our health care on treating very sick people, and not just people sick from Covid. Let people live normal unmasked lives, seeing people, going out, travelling, and taking care of their many other needs. The vast majority of our vulnerable population is fully vaccinated and has access to boosters. Those who are more vulnerable can take extra precautions. Mask up if you want to. Many people have had Omicron and many more will get it. Eventually just about everyone will and the consequences for our young and vaccinated population are cold or flu-like. We’ll be fine. It’s time to declare Covid-19 endemic and end restrictions.2 points

The problem is, and maybe it’s because the highly dominant Boomer generation is retiring, people like blackbird who really aren’t impacted by restrictions because they’re already puttering around at home all day, don’t understand how damaging these restrictions are to young people who really don’t face any serious health risks from Covid. To be stuck learning at home, deprived of friends, dating, dancing, concerts, travel, sports, and everything that blackbird got to experience as a youth, expected to continue to shut down their lives so that masked-up triple vaxxed blackbird, who has no plans to leave the house anytime soon, can feel more protected, is selfish. Here we are with access to multiple vaccines and PPE, vaccine passports so only the inoculated get to participate in cloistered “safety”, and a milder variant that feels like a basic cold or flu for almost everyone, and we’re still restricting gatherings and keeping students at home. This is immoral mistreatment of generations of Canadians. How can our own governments treat citizens like prisoners, damaging mental health, destroying businesses, and causing an interminable debt for future generations to pay off? It’s disgusting. END ALL RESTRICTIONS NOW OR EXPECT TO LIVE UNDER THEM FOR YEARS TO COME.2 points

Monoclonal therapy is a standard treatment in some US states and several treatment drugs were approved for preventative treatment (remdesivir, paxlovid, and others). Why are they not available or even approved in this country yet? Try to ask our distinguished lavishly compensated lockdown managers. At least that one thing they seem to have perfected, if not much else.2 points

I think the best thing that could happen from this pandemic, is if the citizens started demanding that CEO"s who mismanage their provincial health systems are held responsible. Their wages and raises should be based on job performance, like everyone else. If they mismanage - no raise, and wage cuts.2 points
-
Maybe it's you who doesn't get it. There is billions of dollars allocated in the budget for the next 3 years to enforce vaccine passports, which are completely useless. Imagine if, instead, we spent that money on improving our healthcare system.2 points
-
Maybe instead of Trudeau spending a billion dollars on useless vaccine passport enforcement, he should be allocating that money to improve hospitals. I think he will go down in Canadian political history as the most damaging and power-grubbing PM we've ever had.2 points

Liberals and NDP lean heavily toward Marxism. Liberals are more accurately described as hard-core progressives or woke liberals. They just agreed to pay 40 billion dollars to natives who were taken into foster care and allegedly deprived of their culture. This is unheard of in any other place on the planet. It's hard to see how much more radical Liberals could be. This staggering amount of money will be taken from ordinary taxpayers today who had absolutely nothing to do with taking FNs into foster care and they were placed there in order to protect them. There was no other place to put them. There are other things that prove the radical nature of the Liberal government. Things you might or might not agree with.2 points

" There is no point in trying to stop all infections, says the head of Britain's vaccine body: 'Society has to open up' Fourth COVID jabs should not be offered until there is more evidence they are effective, the head of Britain’s vaccine body has warned, as he said giving boosters to the whole population every six months was “not sustainable”. https://nationalpost.com/news/world/we-cant-jab-the-whole-planet-every-six-months1 point

First of all this is just a report with recommendations not an official plan to attack homeowners. Secondly, the report says nothing at all about a tax on the middle class. Thirdly, the article containing the report contradicts your assertion this will not affect speculators who own multiple properties. It says the exact opposite. Unless ordinary middle class homeowners took a more careful look your OP and especially your thread title they might decide to reject a set of recommendations most of them should be able to get behind.1 point

Well that’s another reason why we have to shift to allowing citizens to make informed health decisions that are right for them. Trudeau is pretending that vaccine holdouts are the reason the pandemic continues. The vast majority of the public are vaccinated. Omicron is relatively mild. Millions have had and are getting it daily. Almost all recover well. Covid is endemic, but that doesn’t fit the narrative of fear that Trudeau and Biden are telling. Trudeau is trying to justify his budget and temperance lady health puritan story. It’s not about what’s right for the public or the health of our democracy; it’s about him and our other leaders being perceived as right.1 point

My sister did her part and now she's partially disabled. Since her jabs were more than 6 months ago, she's pretty much unvaxxed now. She cannot get a booster, or the odds are high that she will die. Why should my sister die for you? I really hope you answer this, because it seems incredulous to me that you are actually demanding that people and children die and become permanently disabled for you AND calling them selfish if they do not.1 point

Yawn, Brampton Hospital just lifted its Orange Alert. Alberta is returning kids to school next week. I know how badly you want this to be a crippling crisis, but it’s time to move on.1 point
-
The only reason we’re having a shortage is because our screening makes mildly sick people and asymptomatic positives stay home. End the screening and start treating Omicron as the 3-5 day cold/flu that it is, and the “crisis” disappears. This is a crisis of fear rather than reality. Dump the restrictions and mask requirements. Let people decide how much they think they need to protect themselves. The vulnerable have boosters, masks, Amazon, etc. Time to move on and stop throwing money at this. There’s much more to life than worrying about a disease we can easily manage at this point. Let people live normal lives. Free up resources so health care workers can focus on treating sick people.1 point

Funny thing was that at Bull Run, both sides wore a collection of 'home spun' uniforms that were blue...grey...or whatever colour they had in abundance. This led to much confusion on the battlefield which often resulted in entire regiments firing on other friendly regiments. Add to this that both sides employed mercenary Zouave troops that refused to fight one another yet dressed more or less alike...you can imagine the chaos! Minié balls a flyin'...but at whom? It's a parable...you see.1 point

Yup the young are being robbed of normal lives to protect a small group of worried people who can be fully vaccinated and boosted, who can wear masks and social distance themselves. Do we need to continue to turn the world upside down to satisfy their selfishness?1 point

Ontario (Canada) Admits 50% of “COVID” Hospitalizations Not From COVID, Death Count May Also Be Misleadin " COVID hospitalizations and deaths throughout this pandemic have been inaccurately reported. This has been made clear by government health officials throughout the pandemic in multiple regions across the planet. One of them is in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer, reaffirmed this once again in a press conference held at the end of December. She stated that Ontario’s daily reported COVID hospitalization numbers haven’t been telling the fully story. She confirmed that approximately 50% of COVID hospitalizations represent people who aren’t actually there suffering from COVID, but have gone to the hospital with something else, like a broken leg, and just happened to test positive. The Toronto Sun was one of the few media outlets to emphasize this. Brampton (an outskirt of the Greater Toronto Area) Mayor Patrick Brown Echoed Moore’s statements. On Dec 29, 2021 CTV News Toronto reported that he has heard from a number of physicians that COVID hospitalization numbers may not necessarily paint an accurate picture of the current situation in the province. He said that approximately 50 per cent of people in hospitals diagnosed with COVID were admitted for another reason." https://thepulse.one/2022/01/05/ontario-canada-admits-50-of-covid-hospitalizations-not-from-covid-deaths-count-may-also-be-misleading/1 point

My experience is, and this goes for the USA as well as Canada, and probably the world, people are far LESS conservative than they THINK they are. W Bush I bet considers himself a die hard conservative, when in fact, by the measure of the Von Mises crowd, the kindest thing you can say is that Bush is an interventionist. (not a statist, but just one notch above). I bet Liberal voters actually see themselves as centrist. And CPC voters think of themselves as hard conservatives, when they are really in the middle.1 point

It's sad to say but there are plenty of stunned Canadians that believe in socialism and communism. These stunned people should go live in a socialist or communist country for a year. I can bet that they could not wait to get the hell out of those communist countries as soon as possible. Maybe then those Canadians will finally get it and become real and true conservatives and fight to keep Canada free from communism. The bigger the government the less freedom one will have because the government will always be the problem and never the bloody solution. ?1 point

1. He got the US back in the Paris Accords 2. Biden has successfully appointed 40 new federal judges 3. There was a big ticket deal with Australia for submarines (kind of pissed off the French) 4. Paused Federal Executions (maybe not as big a topic in Canada but America still struggles with how we feel about killing prisoners) 5. Has helped to start re-uniting the immigrant families the Trump administration broke up 6. Last I checked, before Omicron, the US stock market was still very high and doing quite well. Trump not just "mishandled" COVID but grossly so. It was largely his rhetoric that kept people from taking the vaccine or even wearing masks here. He repeatedly tried to pawn off quack remedies. Yes "WarpSpeed" was under his watch. Pfizer apparently didn't need any of the US money for development of the first vaccine. But I'm willing to say Trump got ONE thing correct on COVID by simply standing out of the way. Meanwhile he was actively making it worse. Biden is working to clean up the mess that Trump left and many Trumpists are helping to ensure COVID sticks around longer That is not correct. It is a well known metric that shows Dem and Liberal voters have higher levels of education. Not really. The current state of things in the US is no longer just a simple disagreement of means. It is a fundamental disagreement on reality vs ideology. The Right are far in the anti-reality lead. (YOu may not know it but in America the Right is where most of the people who don't believe in Evolution reside. It's also where the majority of people skeptical of climate change also reside.)1 point
-
The Right in America ironically demonized Carter but that was based not just on political bias but he was in office for several years. Biden has been in office less than a year and the same sturm and drang are rising up about how Biden has "failed". It's nothing more than plain old political silliness. Biden's term has been rough, we are in a once-in-a-century pandemic that was grossly mishandled by Trump and we have a large enough percentage of Americans who would rather risk death than take a vaccine or even wear masks to help stop the spread of it that the pandemic will continue on. The economy here is doing better than any rational being could expect (and sometimes it is doing well enough in some sectors as to make it seem irrational itself). Biden isn't perfect and his tenure so far has not been absolute perfection, but it isn't as bad as "advertised" on some US media. This blather about Biden as a failure is nothing more than sore-loser Trumpists kvetching from the sidelines hoping that more disinformation will swing a few more low-information voters in the mid-terms and possibly in 2024.1 point

The major question is; why do we allow Chinese media when Chinese media censors our media? Why is it only one way, just like why do we accept all of their imports and accept their jobs theft, but they do not accept our exports? The answer might me that there is an interest from the higher ups in our own country to serve CCP. We must not confuse ourselves by pointing the finger toward people 10000km away for the real foe. It is not China, it is not the CCP. It is the Conservative Party, the Liberals and the NDP, alongside the financial elites in Toronto and in Montreal who are the ones we should blame.1 point
