The red cross is important. It makes medics and injured combatants/civilians safe on the way to/from the hospital. Once ambulances are known to be troop transports they're fair game. 

Using them as troop transports is vile. 

Also, Russia wouldn't be there if Ukraine didn't threaten NATO membership.
