Quality of posters is what it is.  If you look around it is not too many guys posting, so weeding those perceived bad apples may leave a modestly busy forum look quite empty.

When we leave only you here , Mike, who are you going to have discussions with?   Yourself?

The post was up for a long time after I reported it, so there was a basis for that presumption.

What's the point of having a rule if the posts with infringements remain ?  The forum will appear to all visitors to not enforce its rules I would say.

I've never really felt comfortable removing posts just because a small portion of the post breaks some type of rule. Particularly when there has been some time lapse between when the original post was made, and when the moderation action happens.  Inevitably, people engage with the post, and then when the moderators remove the post, there is a glaring hole in the middle of the thread.

Greg, I’m a new member but I’m confused. I’ve mod alerted two members who are continually insulting.  You’re worried about losing members? If you don’t weed your lawn, no grass will grow. I don’t mind somebody getting away with bending the rules now and then, but it’s continual here and I’m certainly not going to stay long if your board is nothing but insults and attacks.

Grow a thicker skin and or use the ignore functionality.

The report a post functionality should only be used as a last resort. Not because your feelings were hurt by immature posters who overuse silly insults (which degrades their positions greatly).

I'm not going to police every single incident.

You don’t need to police every incident. If you start handing out 3 day bans and threatening permanent bans, it will stop. I know it will stop because that works on other platforms.

Probably the most misused and confusing term in the land of political message boards is "troll." A lot of inferior minds tend to define "trolling" as any speech they either disagree with or just don't like.

Probably a textbook example of trolling would be if I visited a forum that overtly advertises itself as a LIBERAL forum and I proceed to post links from FoxNews and old Rush Limbaugh sites. I get that. The LIBERAL forum is up front with its closed mind. Posting anything they disagree with would be trolling. I'm fine with that, so long as they are up front about it.

(I started to mention going to a conservative forum and  linking something from DemocratUnderground or Utne Reader, but you can't troll conservatives. They just fight back.)

In a forum such as this one, I'm assuming that all points of view are accepted and that no one side of the aisle controls everything. If I'm posting an honest conservative point of view, that is NOT trolling. Those who disagree just have to learn a few life lessons, put down their participation trophies and realize they just aren't that special in the real world.

I've been insulted almost every day at this forum. I take that in stride, and there are times I give back as good as I get. A good lively political message board should be the home for lively debate.

I have been engaged in political debate on message boards going back to the mid-90s, when Algore's alleged invention of the Internet first gave us political message boards so we wouldn't throw our shoes at the TV set on Sunday Mornings. (And one poster here proceeded to engage in ageism and level all kinds of old man insults at me. Such is life with inferior minds.) What I have come to understand is the purpose of the anonymous political message board. It allows people to post without having to reveal their true identities, even the location they are posting from. EVERY poster I've ever encountered has done the same thing: posted ideas that would likely get a knuckle sandwich if done in person. This environment allows people to be the ass holes they don't dare be in real life.

I'm okay with that. The only real cure for unpopular speech is MORE FREE SPEECH. I have ZERO problem with ANYONE here speaking their minds honestly, and I'll NEVER accuse someone of being a troll. That's just plain childish, at least at this forum.
