  1. People talk about colonialism in Canada as though the French and later the English arrived to a populous, settled Canada and took over against the will of the locals. For the first couple of centuries of European settlement it was fairly easy for Indigenous to live as they had in the past and for Europeans to do the same. In fact there was much intermarriage (Métis) and the Indians chose their alliances based on perceived threats and vice versa, I.e. French with Hurons, English with Mohawks, etc. The Indians had warred with each other much as the Europeans had warred with each other. The issues really seem to have started when the English were unable to prevent US western expansion (Manifest Destiny), which ended Tecumseh’s goal of an Indian state in the Ohio valley. After that the protection of Indian lands and way of life became negotiated through treaties. The outcomes worked against the Indigenous because the European and now American Loyalist settlers kept coming. The Americans basically went to war with the Indians, defeated them, then set the terms for the reserve system. The Brits (who had recently taken over from the French and lost the US to the Patriots) were trying to manage the reality of massive immigration, which they encouraged in part to build a bulwark against American expansionism. It wasn’t all bad for Indigenous because they too benefited from trade and scientific progress. Almost everyone wanted public education and access to opportunity. The decision to create Residential Schools was in part a way of getting education to children from remote communities, which still happens today when Indigenous kids leave home to attend high school. The religious institutions that ran those schools could be harsh, but they were also harsh towards white kids. My mother remembers the strappings, hitting, and verbal abuse. People were harsher. Life was harsher. Indigenous got it worse because of cultural bias. Also the Indian Act and Indian agents who enforced it were misguided. The act created a strange kind of double standard, with privilege attached to ethnic status. It’s quite arguable that with the tax exemptions and government subsidies, Indigenous enjoy many privileges over other Canadians today, which is why we have to be careful in discerning past injustices to understand how they came about but also to understand that throwing more privileges at Indigenous isn’t fair and has helped reinforce social divides. There have been payouts to victims and no doubt there will be calls for “reparations”. Who should make them and to whom? How far back do we reach to right the past? Patriots vs Loyalists? Romans versus early Christians? Should we go back to Macedonia? What about the invasions of Jerusalem? Persia? We need to stop privileging people and remember that merit is the only bellwether in a free, democratic, and honest society. Genocide literally means killing people. Was there ever a program in Canada to kill Indigenous people? Absolutely not. Was forced assimilation a form of cultural genocide? It seems unfair by today’s standard to have imposed education on Indigenous, but we still have mandatory public education for good reasons. The teachers were of European ancestry and spoke English or French, the official languages. The injustice was the suppression of culture and language, as well as the forced separation from parents. I don’t think that happened to the same degree with white non-English or non-French speaking immigrants from Europe, though it did to some extent. People who committed abuse must be held accountable for their actions.

  2. According to "my interpretation" of genocide, you can achieve genocide without physically killing a single person. The killing part is irrelevant.

  5. Here it is again in case you missed it: " The PACT Act as written includes a budget gimmick that would allow $400 billion of current law spending to be moved from the discretionary to the mandatory spending category. This provision is completely unnecessary to achieve the PACT Act’s stated goal of expanding health care and other benefits for veterans. However, it would enable an additional $400 billion in future discretionary spending completely unrelated to veterans. By failing to remove this gimmick, Congress would effectively be using an important veterans care bill to hide a massive, unrelated spending binge." And again because you seem to believe there was only one source for the information: " Deep in the NBC story, the reporters acknowledged that “Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Penn., who voted against the legislation in June, has remained vocally critical of the bill. Yesterday, after the vote, he said that the bill included a “budget gimmick” that moved $400 billion over 10 years from “discretionary to the mandatory spending category,” which he considered unreasonable.”1 I then investigated what the House must have debated about the bill and found Claudia Tenney’s (R-NY) Congressional Representative Website: “I voted “No” on the Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act. I strongly support efforts to deliver much-needed relief to veterans suffering from exposure to dangerous toxins… Unfortunately, this legislation, as considered by the House of Representatives, used an accounting trick to shift the spending from discretionary to mandatory, which could open the door to even further reckless spending by President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and Leader Schumer despite inflation recently hitting a 41-year-high of 9.1 However, I will continue to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to improve upon this concern and ensure that we keep our commitment to veterans and deliver the care, resources, and support they need and deserve.”2 The 28 JUL 2022 US Senate vote on the PACT Act happened just hours after Senator Manchin changed his mind and supported the $739 Billion Inflation Reduction Act, which is the watered down version of Biden’s elusive Build Back Better Act. With the $400 Billion accounting trick built into the PACT Act, the Democrats have over $1 Trillion in new spending planned as the country officially enters a recession (2 negative growth quarters in a row) and has 9.1% inflation largely due to excessive government spending on Biden’s watch. Even Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos, who is an ardent supporter of the democrat party commented in May 2022, “They know inflation hurts the neediest most. Remember the administration tried their best to add another $3.5 Trillion to federal spending. They failed but if but if they had succeeded, inflation would be even higher than it is today and inflation is at a 40 year high.”3 " And what is actually claimed on Senator Toomey's website is his: "technical fix does not reduce spending on veterans by even $1 or affect the expansion of care and benefits in the underlying bill."

  6. people get guns into those zones because criminals don't follow laws they don't follow any of your other gun control laws either your plan only works if all bad people with guns listen to the laws, but that's not how it works and it never will be you are designing laws for fictional society that will never exist and assuming that will work in the real world

  7. I've always had very cordial relations with the Indians the Iroquois, particularly the Mohawks I was toe to toe with them on Op Salon/ Feather in 1990 and I was able to diffuse the situation with parley in the name of Her Majesty I dated a Mohawk girl, but it was she who broke it off because she said the Mohawks would never accept her having a British boyfriend I go to Grand River, and those Mohawks know that I respect them as brothers in arms for they are the ones who saved Upper Canada at the Heights of Queenston on 13 October 1812 and you serve side by side with a lot of Indians in the Canadian Army too the Liberal elites are going to lecture me about relating to the Indians ? yeah, okay, whatever

  9. I think it was more of an effort to bring indigenous people into modern society. Was harm done along the way? Yes of course but to my mind genocide brings up images of Nazi Germany and concentration camps and crematoriums. There have been other attempts at genocide as well but trying to educate people in schools is something different. I've heard stories from old timers around here about how strict the schools were back then, nothing like today.

  10. The Pope said the residential school system was a genocide. The word genocide is defined as follows: quote gen·o·cide [ˈjenəˌsīd] NOUN the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group: "a campaign of genocide" · [more] synonyms: racial killing · massacre · wholesale slaughter · mass slaughter · wholesale killing · indiscriminate killing · mass murder · mass homicide · mass destruction · annihilation · extermination · elimination · liquidation · eradication · decimation · [more] unquote He is obviously using the word for political purposes but in doing so is spreading a harmful lie to the world. There was no massacre, racial killing, or slaughter. Many native children were badly abused, sexually, physically and mentally. Many died from diseases. But they were not deliberately slaughtered or massacred as the word genocide clearly means. This shameful terminology is being used by the leader of the world's largest nominal church. Many simply throw the word out and say genocide took place in residential schools. This is completely false and a lie. This will simply give more ammunition to the extremists and radicals to demand more and falsely accuse Canada of crimes against humanity, similar to war crimes or the holocaust, which never occurred.

  11. Your interpretation of genocide. I am saying killing people occurs in all those situations and are they all genocide??

  12. Your argument of genocide is nonsensical. By your interpretation, every war/battle/skirmish/fight/insurrection/coup/overthrow by all peoples all over the world any time throughout history would be genocide.

  13. ..on your and Blakbird's part. hey, let's begin a new thread and call the Pope a liar, because we did not understand the meaning of "genocide". hey, let's continue to post and pretend our definition is the correct one and there is nothing more to it. Forget about the Pope, the government and millions of people who understand and accept what "genocide" is. They are "ignorant", because this is not what I think ! Eh?

  14. Also means to kill a people. Like explained on page one by other posters. Canada did have in place a program to assimilate or kill the indigenous people, so those in power could rule their lands and use take the resources for themselves, while keeping the survivors in check. I do not need to convince you or anyone, as long as our present government and the Pope are convinced. You would think they would not be admitting things that harm their institutions, unless what was said really happened.

  20. Not sure what you are trying to convey. The link you provided indicates Switzerland is quite safe and has very good gun control measures. Your link says "Switzerland still has one of the highest rates of gun violence in Europe, and suicides account for most gun deaths in the country." but does not provide any statistics. Far form mass shooting and crimes involving guns. It also says "In 2016, the country had 47 attempted homicides with firearms. The country's overall murder rate is near zero."

  22. like the violent crime rate like the homicide rate like the acceptability of using violence to resolve disputes like the acceptability of using gun violence to resolve disputes like socioeconomic conditions like mental health differences like the influence of the media etc. why would just assume gun control is the primary difference maker? particularly to the point that you feel it necessary to make jokes about how little the impact of other factors is on gun crime? Norway has more mass shootings per 100k than America Norway has far more gun control than America and far less guns if gun control was the primary difference maker in gun crime to the degree you suggest and a wide variety of other factors could be hand waved away as you did in the above post then how do you explain that?

  23. How many times do I have to say it: 1) the so-called “accounting trick” provision was in the original bill when Republicans passed it the first time. Your own copy-paste which you probably didn’t even read or understand admits that 2) It’s not an “accounting trick” to make it mandatory instead of discretionary budget item 3) Nowhere does the legislation “open the door” to unrelated or “random” spending It moves RELATED VA spending to mandatory which is still subject to appropriation scrutiny through normal process 4) clearly the motive was to pwn the Dems in retaliation for Dems passing the Inflation Reduction Act which is why the Republicans were partying like it’s 1999 after condemning those veterans to die All you’re doing is copy-pasting Republicans baseless claims issued by their spokespeople. Why don’t you show us the actual proof that backs up these claims? Where’s the paragraph in the bill that authorizes hundreds of billions of unrelated spending? Why don’t you quote that instead of your politician’s spokesperson’s propaganda? As usual, just like the BIG LIE and all your other baseless conspiracy theories, your claims are just zero-evidence bullshit that you gullibly accept and believe without question

  24. America having more firearms homicides than Canada has nothing to do with the amount of guns in either nation Switzerland has a lot more guns than many countries with much higher firearms homicide rates, for instance just because someone owns or carries a gun doesn't mean it's inevitable they shoot someone with it that's not how it works

  25. If you have thousands of armed people in the same place, eventually someone will start shooting even if it is by mistake. The places with the most guns have the most shootings. The US firearms homicide rate per 100k pop is 6 times Canada.

  26. targets equipped to defend themselves are hard targets no mass shooters are targeting gun shows that's not a coincidence your theory that if someone starts shooting in a place with lots of armed people that a bunch of innocent people are going to get shot automatically doesn't have any real life examples backing it up it's entirely a figment of your imagination

  27. How is it a hardened target. You hear some shots. When you turn and look you see several people with guns. Which one do you shoot? Even military and police who are trained to recognize a threat occasionally make mistakes. With thousands of armed people in an enclosed arena, eventually some duffus is going to see a threat that doesn't exist and start shooting.

  31. Bullshit. If 20K people pull out guns, 90% of them won’t know who the real shooter is. I’m not triggered by guns, I’m not even against them. I’m just not a delusional idiot.
    1 point
  32. How does your plan work? If everyone there is armed and someone starts shooting, are you going to pull out your gun? You better think twice because some other “good guy with a gun” is just as likely to think you are a shooter and take you out. That is the real world.
    1 point
  33. If people are getting guns into them, they aren't gun free. But wouldn't it be great if everyone there had guns and all started shooting. Which one with the gun was the original shooter? The collateral damage possibilities are unlimited. Now the hell could anyone think that 20,000 people in an arena all armed could possibly be a good idea.

It wasn't the right that froze peoples bank accounts or still forces people travelling to fill out a silly ass ARRCAN app. Why does a Canadian have to fill out this app when the government already knows when a Canadian has returned back to Canada. What bloody business is it of the Marxist dicktator Turdeau government in Ottawa needing to know as to when a Canadian returns to Canada? Tamara liche was thrown into some Canadian gulag just for daring to peacefully protest. Now it has become a crime in Canada to protest if the protest is against the dicktator in Ottawa. Go away with your anti-right bullshit. I will bet that you cannot even show me anything as to what the lefty Marxist liberals in Ottawa have done to make Canada great? All I have ever seen from those lefty bozos is just more taxes, more government, and less freedom. we now have high inflation and high gas prices thanks to that dicktator in Ottawa. Communist tyranny now prevails in Canada, and all being done under the Turdeau Marxist globalist government and it is obvious that you support this communist tyranny. The turd in Ottawa is truly a traitor to Canada and Canadians. PS: Your Jan. 6th hearing is still nothing more than just another lefty donkey democrat kangaroo court. Liberalism is a dangerous disease to have and you seriously have that disease. You need to go visit a right wing doctor for help. LOL.

  44. Can you imagine the cost of living for living in Canada if we had to create all these things domestically though? And that's my point. Whenever I see the term food security used, it's in the context of food protectionism. It's essentially a tax on Canadian consumers to pay so much for dairy when our biggest ally produces it in the lower rate. It's a worthwhile conversation to have, I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying there's a price for everything, and if you want to have security on the level you're talking about then we are essentially building a closed off economy along the lines of a Soviet bloc.

A Wisconsin Judge found, "Absolutely No" proof of Election Fraud. https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2022-07-28/judge-wisconsin-probe-found-absolutely-no-election-fraud MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin judge said Thursday that a Republican-ordered, taxpayer-funded investigation into the 2020 election found “absolutely no evidence of election fraud," but did reveal contempt for the state's open records law by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and a former state Supreme Court justice he hired. Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn awarded about $98,000 in attorneys' fees to the liberal watchdog group American Oversight, bringing an end in circuit court to one of four lawsuits the group filed. Vos's attorney, Ron Stadler, said he was recommending that Vos appeal the ruling. The fees will be paid by taxpayers, which is why the judge said she was not also awarding additional punitive damages against Vos. Costs to taxpayers for the investigation, including ongoing legal fees, have exceeded $1 million. “I think the people of the state of Wisconsin have been punished enough for this case," Bailey-Rihn said. “I don’t think it does anyone any good to have punitive damages placed on the innocent people of this state.” Just like in Arizona, no proof...no proof...absolutely no proof.

Eventually my body will age to expiration, but my mind...my sense of awareness...my "soul"...will exist and maintain its core identity. That which makes me...me. So in my life, I've collected possessions that I will leave to my 3 children with specific instruction to not blow it but to expand the wealth, as I have every intention of returning to my family and I want to be comfortable. So its a double-edged sword of sorts. I threaten to come back as one of their grandchildren to the family of the one who's not holding up his or her end of the bargain. None of them really want me as a grandchild so...I figure they'll all take good care of my small little fortune.
