  2. Retaliatory tariffs would have pushed us into a recession and these partisan asshats would be even more happily excoriating Carney for that. For all the sniveling we hear about lies and broken promises you can bet any deal Carney might have made by now with Trump would have immediately been called a disaster, especially if it somehow happened to be a good one. Meanwhile Canadians know full well dealing with Trump is far likelier to be a mugs game and appear to be perfectly willing to cut Carney a fair bit of slack because of it. No deal is better than a bad deal and everyone knows it - no matter how much Conservatives might wish for one

  10. I didn't and am not advocating anything other than what I briefly said in a 'Carney is failing' conversation.... 'it's not about promoting a person because of their identity, it's about including everyone'. I'm sure there are many examples of persons getting positions when they were not the best candidate, but I'm sure that also happens more often with the typical white male getting positions because of just that, being a white male. We all have our inherent biases don't we.... I sat through more DEI presentations and 'refreshers' than I care to remember and it was a basic principle in our organization. To me it was just an acronym for common decency and how we should treat people, but in my exposure to hirings and/or promotions DEI didn't mean you got the job or promotion because of colour, gender, age, etc....it was about hiring the best candidate and promoting based on the persons performance. I'm out of the business world now but if I wasn't it would be no different... hire and/or promote a person based on their ability or performance, not on their gender, colour, age, etc. If there were two people with essentially the same skill sets and they differed in colour, or gender, or age, etc, I'd hire the person best suited to whom they would be working with and where I felt the best fit would would be. Again, I didn't and am not advocating anything other than.... 'it's not about promoting a person because of their identity, it's about including everyone'. DEI remains part of the culture of many of the top companies in the world and I think that's a good thing.

  15. Sounds good yet in practice it tends to result in hiring and promotion targets that are based on ethnicity (sometimes even exclusively on ethnicity) instead of competency. In other words, whether intended or not, merit in the form of competency becomes subordinate to skin colour, language, age or whatever. The most grievous examples of that are some university offerings where white people need not apply... they aren't even embarrassed to post those job ads. In some cases, as with military, police and fire service recruiting, it's necessary to expand the normal recruiting band (that ready, willing, able thing) in order to find a sufficient number of the targeted intake group sufficient to form an quorum suitable for course serial loading. If the stated goal of military intake is 25% women by 2026, how else would you achieve a government mandated target if you happen to be in the recruiting business? Not surprisingly, when it comes to sons and daughters of serving members making component transfers to the regular force from the primary reserves, the daughters are enrolled long before their brothers are... that observation may be anecdotal but it's not without lots of examples showing it to be more than simple coincidence. There's a big difference between not excluding people based on age, sex, ethnicity, language etc. and deliberately targeting those individuals based on any parameter other than merit. If you're advocating for doing that I don't see how you can deny that meritocracy can easily become illusionary. When you ask about it you'll hear that standards are never lowered, they're either enhanced or modified to job performance criteria. Even that sounds cool until you consider a little thing called universality of service and see fat navy girls tromping through the bush to fight fires. Obesity in the military now exceeds equivalent age gender rates in civilian life... and we're just getting started here. You can get away with it for a bit but like equipment rust out, it eventually takes a toll and that toll impacts operational tempo. Venture too far into that bottle and retention becomes an issue. Keep slurping the cool aid after that and the capacity to out train personnel deficits becomes a huge challenge. We actually managed to accomplish that very thing without hiring and promoting to DEI targets... imagine the possibilities now.

  16. As with most of your posts, you make zero sense. Curious where I said or inferred meritocracy is an illusion.

  19. Sanctuary cities exist for a single purpose and that's to systemically ignore federal immigration law and inter-agency cooperation. It's also a double edged sword IMO, if you support the idea in principle you should have no issue with other incarnations of the same thing... say second amendment sanctuaries that openly ignore (meaning defy) any future gun control efforts you might support. Like others, I may have my own views on a case by case basis but across the board I can't see it being a good thing. If nothing else, I think it makes a country difficult to govern and it might be wise to consider the unintended consequences of doing it for short term political gain. I guess we can agree to disagree here... my point stands though, don't be surprised if (actually when) that very argument gets thrown back in your face at a later date. I see nothing "fun" in this and nothing fun about the predictable future backlash (in both directions) either. I do think you're right about the gleeful aspect of it for some voters though and it speaks to my continued fear of election outcomes becoming an inducement to political violence if (when) things don't go in the direction that people prone to endorsing politically motivated violence hope for. IMO again, it's one of those "be careful what you wish for" things that people unwisely leave to the see-saw to decide... based on what I've seen of the world I think that's a bad idea because it usually comes with a laundry list of unintended consequences. You're seeing that right now and you don't like it. Just imagine how much you won't like what comes next... it's still a long voyage to Crazy Island IMO and we haven't crossed the PNR line yet. But I think we may be getting close and that gleefulness I mentioned above always adds a few shaft revolutions to the engine room telegraph.

  28. Here's a tip for those of you who discuss topics where your partner just states their opinion over and over with no rationale: don't. They're not proceeding to a conclusion from a set of facts and principles. So it's the equivalent of a three year old telling you their favourite ice cream flavour. There's no debate. Find better use of your time. Discuss things with others.

  29. According to USFacts Cook County (Chicago and metro area) it's 15.8 per 100,000. Los Angeles and Cook Counties are also the two most populated counties in the country. When adjusted for population, Cook County’s 15.8 homicides per 100,000 people ranked 17th among 63 large-central metro US counties with reliable data, and Los Angeles County’s 6.8 ranked 37th. That's actually pretty good (if you can say that) when you compare it to some red cities like New Orleans (46), Memphis (41), St Louis (38), etc, etc, etc... County Major City Homicides per 100,000 people Homicides Orleans Parish, LA New Orleans 46 46 166 Shelby County, TN Memphis 41 41 372 372 St. Louis 38 38 106 Baltimore 36 36 205 205 Washington, DC 36 36 244 244 Jefferson County, AL Birmingham 28 28 187 187 Philadelphia County, PA Philadelphia 26 26 402 402 https://usafacts.org/articles/which-cities-have-the-highest-murder-rates/ Red, blue, green or purple... fair to say the US has a problem here.

  31. The original source of this thread leading us round in the wilderness, was a posting of a CNN news story (in the first message) that claimed that ONE Dominican taxi driver had allegedly refused a ride to someone wearing a Canadian badge on, who allegedly told him they were American, whereupon he said 'have a good day' and drove off. OMG - dominica runs on tourist dollars - would a taxi driver have refused a fare? would this discussion have taken place before they sat down in the taxi, would they then have been ordered out? I think not. The cnn story has a tagline of Vivian Song, who doubtless has her own reasons for inventing clickbait Vivian Song, Author at Open Canada - she makes money by hawking it out! Although I see this story in various forms is all over the internet with many different so-called 'journalists' claiming authorship. Sure enough someone baited a hook here with this trash, and all the suckerfish leapt on. Even if it were true, it relates to just one person's experience, compared with the millions more american tourists who do not wear Canadian lapel badges. This is a nothingburger, a piece of prolefeed. Has nothing worthy of discussion happened in Canada we have to resort to faux outrage over THIS !!

  33. This is a new level of drug enforcement that we have never seen before, and the level of enforcement against any crime actually does have an effect on it. We saw it in DC, we even saw it in terrorist orgs, where Al Qaeda pretended to not even exist anymore, and it will be reflected in the availability of drugs in the US. Criminals hate Trump, bigtime. If criminals and terrorists were the only ones who could participate in elections then Kamala would have received 100% of the vote.

  38. It's so charmingly naive to run into someone who thinks our immigration system has any purpose related to our economy other than to mask its collapse. The only 'consultations' that go on are between the Liberals and their supporters in various ethnic voting blocs about how many new immigrants from THEIR group the Liberals will bring in if they can wrangle X number of votes at election time. To be clear, none of the decisions taken about who and how many to bring in are related to the economy. Our immigration system stopped having anything to do with our economic well-being decades ago. It only serves the political interests of the party in power now.

  43. Have done some work inside of provincial institutions and #2 son-in-law worked in max security fed with the hardest cases in the country. i also have a friend who has built up contract detention systems. IMHO from what I have learned is some people just plain screw up and had no real understanding they were going to end up incarcerated. Others knew full well that what they do is likely to land them in jail as a hazard of the job. The latter bunch consider their time inside part of building their criminal network connections and learning skills from their encounters. The first bunch might be able to rehabilitate and stay on track if they aren't recruited while inside. The latter laugh their ass off about just about everything since they can get all of the booze, drugs, telephones and often sex from crooked guards. Inside there is precious little rehab going on and even less punishment. To fix this mess will take a lot more than just stopping the revolving door, but it's a good first step. Of course it also doesn't help when we have immigration policies that welcome in every criminal who wants to join their pals in the wide open, unlimited potential victims in the GWN.

  44. If the prices increase because of lost shipments, dead and jailed cartel members, the unwillingness of people to be mules, high-ranking members opting to lay low for a while while the heat is cranked to EXTRAJUDICIAL KILLINGS, etc, that will make it harder to get a new generation of users addicted. If you're being honest now, Spanky, you're admitting that: Trump is actually going all-in against Fentanyl and other narcotics if nothing else, he is causing the prices to increase Would it kill you to acknowledge that there is absolutely no doubt that Trump is doing everything he can to harm cartels and prevent the flow of dangerous, life-ending narcotics? Isn't it nice to know that the US isn't pulling any punches? I really don't think that you can say the same for Biden, and I know that cartel members agree with me. They feel it when they go to jump in a boat. We can agree to disagree about whether or not the war on drugs is an actual war, but I will never cry for the life of a drug dealer. If Trump wants to declare war on Mexico just to make the drone strikes legal, so be it.
