I am Groot Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 Former President Donald Trump on Saturday said he would encourage Russia to do “whatever the hell they want” to any NATO member country that doesn’t meet spending guidelines on defense in a stunning admission he would not abide by the collective-defense clause at the heart of the alliance if reelected. Do I have to mention that would certainly include Canada? Trump says he would encourage Russia to ‘do whatever the hell they want’ to any NATO country that doesn’t pay enough (msn.com) Do I have to mention that would certainly include Canada? 1 Quote

Trump told him that so maybe he starts ponying up the money and troops they are supposed to. Imagine if you signed a lease stating that you would pay 2000 a month and you just decide, I am just going to pay 1k a month how long do you think you get to stay in that home? NATO is supposed to be COLLECTIVE defense meaning that everyone has to chip in and maintain a certain level of military might along with paying their share. It doesn't mean America jumps in and protects anyone in NATO while everyone else gets to do very little. Look at Ukraine we have given them more than any other country has combined and we have the least to lose by Russia taking over. We give and give and give and other countries crap on us every chance they get. The UN is a joke, they have some of the worst despotic countries on the Human Rights council for god's sake. Quote

The original poster has been corrected numerous times that Trump's work with NATO countries while he was president resulted in a massive cash injection to bolster the strength of NATO, after which Jens Stoltenberg, head of NATO, gave Trump his heartfelt thanks and full recognition. https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_170796.htm Transcript here- https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/opinions_171542.htm?selectedLocale=en "We are making real progress, most importantly on the burden sharing. And your leadership on defense spending is having a real impact. Since 2016, Canada and European allies have added $130 billion more to the defense budgets, and this number will increase to 400 billion U.S. dollars by 2024. This is unprecedented. This is making NATO stronger. And it shows that this Alliance is adapting, responding when the world is changing." Yes it probably took some threats to get the long-standing deadbeats, who want NATO protection but do not pay their agreed-to commitment to pony up. I've posted this link numerous times here but these never-trumpers simply do not listen. Oh well, whatayagonnado? 🤷♂️ Quote

That woke people up and even Germany doubled its military spending while Sweden brought the draft back. You probably don't know this because the only news you ever get is from FOX and One America. NATO membership isn't like leasing an overpriced condo in Trump Tower. It doesn't come with a guaranteed payment schedule. The two percent is a guideline, not a mandatory requirement. 1 hour ago, Fluffypants said: Look at Ukraine we have given them more than any other country has combined and we have the least to lose by Russia taking over. myata Posted February 11 Author Report Posted February 11 (edited) The buffoon is openly weakening the alliance of democracies, the only real thing that stands in the face of the rising coalition of tyrants. There are open disagreements out in the public space about what and how be defended. Today he comes up with one reason, who can say that there won't be another next? I'll think if I'm going to defend you, maybe not. That's the effective and factual end of NATO. He's saying as much, playing right into the hands of dictators, his admired "geniuses" and "very honorable persons". This is what the Republicans are playing with these days. They will carry all responsibility for the consequences for as long as the democracy persists. Edited February 11 by myata 2 Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

There are grown up babies here who think that they do not have contribute (not even fight) to defending freedom of someone else but someone will always stand up to defend them if the need arises. godzilla Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 ‘Enough to make Reagan ill': Trump’s NATO remarks under fire clearly... this conversation that Trump says he had with a leader of some NATO country... didn't happen. because he's the only leader to talks like that. can you imagine an other presidential candidate in the US ever making up stories like this? no. he's special alright. 1 Quote

Sure, Trump is making things worse but tyrannies have been on the rise ever since 1953 in Iran, when the Shiniest Beacon for freedom, liberty and democracy on the planet started overthrowing them and installing despots and dictators. Trump is merely a symptom, like a handful of blood when you cough perhaps but still just a symptom nonetheless. herbie Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 The buffoon is putting his ignorance on display again. The so-called businessman can only count monetary values, showing his total inability to understand govt is not a 'business' and neither is the military. He's a toady to what Eisenhower warned everyone about - the Military Industrial Complex. Where Raytheon and General Dynamics tell the govt what to do instead of you and Airbus and Embrauer get penalized for being "govt subsidized" where as Boeing's military contracts "are not" govt subsidies. He's also demonstrating the dangers of electing this oaf to office, He will - something neither his party came up with, nor it's supporters in their platform, just him. He will tell his Party what it's platform is, not the membership. And of course he needs complete immunity for any decision he makes as well.... The imbecile's latest statement that he would sell his own allies down the river makes the fate of Ukraine pretty obvious if he's elected. They'll no longer be a country but another Russian Oblast and Trump will dance about in glee claiming how he solved the problem, too thick and oblivious to even bear any shame like Neville Chamberlain. But it's yet another reason in the long, long list of why he won't be. 1 3 Quote

OftenWrong Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 Never mind FOX. Here is an article confirming Trump's work with NATO, from the rabidly anti-Trump CNN. Trump praises NATO chief, says he’s happy allies are ‘paying’ President Donald Trump, a sometime NATO skeptic, praised the alliance’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg Tuesday, saying his performance “has been outstanding.” “The relationship with NATO has been very good, the relationship with the secretary general has been outstanding,” Trump said while sitting next to Stoltenberg at the White House. Trump has long criticized NATO countries over their failure to spend enough on defense and meet the two percent of GDP target recommended by the alliance, a target being met by only seven members presently. While previous presidents had made similar critiques of NATO members’ defense spending, Trump has made it a central theme of his presidential campaign and his administration’s foreign policy, once calling the alliance “obsolete” and repeatedly slamming allies over the spending issue and linking it to trade disputes with the European Union. Stoltenberg has repeatedly cited defense spending increases among the non-US members of NATO, thanking Trump Tuesday “for your very strong leadership on burden sharing.” “After years of cutting defense budgets, NATO allies have now started to invest more and by the end of next year they will have added $100 billion more into their defense budgets since you took office, and that helps and it proves also that NATO is a strong alliance,” he added. So you are full of shit, monkey-boy. Quote

"Fine, except you forget, with him even as a hypothetical future leader, we won't have the independence in our country to say anything further or remark in anything that isn't the Party dogma or we and our families will be lined up in the street and shot. " this is a paraphrase if what my German landlord told me about why so many if his town and his countrymen rushed to Hitler's standard when they knew he would be disastrous for the country. He had personal experience. He and his future wife lived in the Hunsruck region of Germany in the late 1930's, he was forced into the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) while his girlfriends family and his own family, except his brother who came with him, stayed in town and worked fields to feed the German Army. He and his brother narrowly escaped being blown.out of the water by the British but turned back due to engine trouble and survived when the ship..Prinz Eugen went into a neutral port and was eventually captured. Not so lucky were the mayor of his home town who resisted the Nazi's,, they were all shot dead. The SS appointed a new mayor and things continued until the war ended. The town then shot the SS mayor and surrendered . My point us..if America goes down, there is not another nation large and powerful enough to take in both Mainland China AND Russia at the same time BUT. ..together with the mutual support of our NATO allies we CAN. This is why we cannot refuse to help NATO! Quote
Moonlight Graham Posted February 12 Report Posted February 12 I don't blame Trump for wanting to make NATO members pay their fair share. The US has been going broke from its massive military budgets while Canada and European nations use their own tax dollars to fund many of social programs for their citizens to enjoy. It's not fair for Canada etc to freeload off US military protection. 3 hours ago, TreeBeard said: Trump says Russia should attack NATO allies. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68266447 At a rally on Saturday, he said he had once told a leader he would not protect a nation behind on its payments, and would "encourage" the aggressors to "do whatever the hell they want".
