I would be interested to hear why Sanders is a wingnut. Somehow I don't think the accusation comes with any actual knowledge of Sanders.

But if the MSM covered Sanders more, you would surely then hear similar whining about why they're giving him so much coverage and ignoring Trump.

It doesn't say anything about the party itself, other than he got a bump from his announcement.

It says something about a party that lines up behind a guy who said this:

"When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists."

"I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me —and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words."

A comment like this one normally leads to cries of protectionism and socialism from conservatives.

"Free trade is terrible. Free trade can be wonderful if you have smart people. But we have stupid people."

Current free trade practices are a major problem, unfortunately they were lobbied for by many of the same major corporations that are funding the GOP. The Donald may talk up a protectionist jobs story but his own party has no desire to go against their backers. Remember this is the party that is pretending climate change doesn't exist to lock up billions in donations.

If Trump wanted to talk about immigration, border security, and trade in a grown-up way instead of the kind of stuff he's saying, it would be a discussion worth having.

I actually have no idea why American progressives aren't more supportive of better border security and reducing immigration, considering who is most hurt by flooding the market with cheap labor.

And it's unfortunate that only fringe candidates on either side are talking about the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Maybe that's why Trump's numbers are surging. It's just too bad there isn't a serious candidate who wants to talk about these things too.

Well said, Trump is a clown, of that there is no doubt, but I think you make a very good point. Trump is talking about issues people want to address, and perhaps with his outlandish statements encompassing such topics, he gains the media spotlight (right or wrong) and sets the narrative for all others.........maybe Trump isn't such an idiot after all.....or he's suffered from a minor stroke ;)

-------

As to the claim that some from the GOP field aren't deriding Trump:

Jeb Bush (His wife was born in Mexico):

“His views are not reflective of the immigrant experience. He’s just wrong,” Bush said in the mellow tone he spoke in throughout the 15-minute phone interview. He was also quick to note, “I don’t spend a lot of quality time going over the Trump message.”

Marco Rubio:

Trump’s comments are not just offensive and inaccurate, but also divisive. Our next president needs to be someone who brings Americans together – not someone who continues to divide. Our broken immigration system is something that needs to be solved, and comments like this move us further from – not closer to – a solution. We need leaders who offer serious solutions to secure our border and fix our broken immigration system.

That is one opinion......inversely, having a handful of numpties in the RNC/GOP race will allow the far more moderate/mainstream candidates (Bush, Rubio, Walker etc) to renounce them in a "presidential fashion"......

As they say about great minds:

Bush represents tradition and quiet competence. That’s not to be discounted as a general election plus since Clinton’s record as secretary of state seems thinner by the day.

Rubio more than any candidate stands for generational change. He’s young but already has more experience than Barack Obama when he ran for the White House. Rubio is charismatic but also steeped in policy and has demonstrated an ability to work with Democrats in the Senate. The latter is not to be discounted in an era when voters express disgust with Washington.

Walker is the candidate of fundamental change in the way government operates. That is demonstrated by his success in taking on public employee unions in Wisconsin. These unions are at their core anti-taxpayer organizations, demanding ever more in pay and benefits, and higher taxes to pay for them. For years venal politicians were only too happy to make promises that states and municipalities couldn’t afford. As Illinois’ troubles illustrate, the bill is coming due. The cause of good government in the 21st century will be taming the power of these unions, and Walker has shown he’s not afraid of that challenge.

Other GOP contenders may rise or fall, but for the moment Republicans, in these three politicians, have candidates with the right stuff.

Discounting Rice entering the race, I still feel the GOP ticket will be Bush and one of Walker or Rubio.....

Rick Perry released a video letter to Donald Trump today. It's a well thought out piece, and good politics as well. It might give him a boost and ensure him being in the top 10 and thus participating in the first debate.

Good on Perry...........I'm glad Perry can take the ribbing on his old lady glasses ..........I also saw Perry interviewed several days ago on FNC, he does seem far more relaxed and confident playing "himself" this time............

The first debates begin next month on Fox, its shaping up that Bush, Rubio, Walker and Perry will represent the establishment/moderate GOP, with Trump, Cruz and Paul leading the goat rodeo/Tea Party.......and the remaining also rans/fodder led by Christie & friends......

If he did not play himself last time, why would you think it would be a good idea to support him this time? I guess people are that stupid.

Its opportunistic nonsense, but it is fun to watch the repubs trying to throw the hair out of the boat.

Did I say I support Perry, or that people should support him? I very clearly stated that though I like Perry, from his time as Governor, he won't win the nomination, but he would be capable (in several positions) in the cabinet of the 2016 (GOP) winner......

Not only that, but Perry himself says that he wasn't prepared when he ran the first time. Couple that with his back surgery and the fact that he couldn't sleep much for a 6 week period during the primary campaign and you get bad performances.

I think last time Perry tried to base his campaign around appealing to the Tea Party idiots. They are numerous enough to make their chosen candidate a factor in the primary, but not numerous enough to win the nomination for their chosen candidate. And associating with these bozos would render a serious candidate unelectable.

If Perry has realized that trying to use these morons to boost his campaign was a mistake, then good for him. Unfortunately that puts him in competition with better mainstream candidates too.

Conversely, I can't help thinking that Trump's surge might be because the Tea Partyists are flocking to his banner. These guys are straight up mental. That's Alex Jones weapons-grade type crazy.

Yep....Trump will go nowhere in the end, but he is part of a national party nomination and election process that separates the wheat from the chaff. Lots of candidates will fizzle for lots of reasons, not because Tea Party types are "weapons grade crazy".

Canada has an election in 100 days and is still stuck with the same static party stiffs as always. Boorrrrring !

Always knew the T Partiers were whackos, but that latter link especially shows an even new level. I may have nightmares.

Trump will fizzle like usual.

Ok if you say so.

Oh wait, what's this?

It would be funny to see Trump win the nomination because all the conservatives will have to backtrack and start fluffing him up!

Those are apologetics if I ever heard them. And is he ready this time?

Its one of those things that a decent message gets hijacked by nutbars. When the tea party first came out, i thought it was just for fiscal matters which made sense at the time as spending is a problem. However as with bandwagons, people start coming out of the woodwork and start temoving credibility from what was a sensible message - cut spending. Now the tea party is all about anti obama stuff and we hear the alex jones grade crap...

He would be the most sensible one for sure. They have to be especially careful as the msm likes to rip apart gop contenders comments to shreds. Mind you trump is a fool.

He's the guy who is basically the hand puppet for a local billionaire isn't he? He slashed salaries and benefits of miiddle class public servants in order to give his owner a big fat tax break?

No, he didn't slash salaries or benefits. I think they have to pay something like 2% more into their pensions.
