Forum Facilitators

Several of the names mentioned have themselves indulged in ad hominem postings. Hopefully that's ground for ineligibility. We need facilitators who will be credible at their jobs as facilitators.

I think Michael Hardner, Jack Weber and Jonsa will make great facilitators.

Rue, August, Scribblett, Keepitsimple and Bloodyminded also come to mind.

I would also recommend Jeferiah however I don't think he comes that often anymore.

Huh???

Moi?!?!?

I'm not sure I'm cut out for it...

I really don't have the patience to deal with some of what I see is abject stupidity of some people here.

I suppose,on the positive side,I tend to piss off people on the left and the right...These pleases me greatly as it validates my personal ideology of being an ultimate Centrist and not being beholden to any specific ideology...

That being said,I think there would more than a few objections to my "facilitation"...

I'm sorry but you are not right-wing enough. And most of those who are being nominated here, are Leftists. I'm sorry but when did this even become a vote? Did someone ask for a vote?

No, but the latte sipping leftists have taken over the thread, nominating their supportors in order to consolidate power. Example we all know that Michael Hardner is a liberal and, a leftist.

You're absolutley right...

Allow me to change my point of view (soos I can consolidate my "power")...

I think Canada requires a Fascist revolt ot make the socialist traitors pay for their Marxistlike insolence.I believe once this happens, this country will require re-education camps (somewhere in the NorthWest Territories) to get these traitors heads right!

If that does'nt work...Simply shoot them!!What better way to decrease the surplus pinko population?

I think we should start with Hardner!!!!!

Pack it off,Hardner!!

You and that pipe smokin' old dude in your avatar!!

Trying to befriend everyone/give everyone the same benefit of the doubt/give everyone the same consideration in spite of past actions isn't necessarily a positive trait, IMO. "Everybody's friend is nobody's friend." Seems to me a good facilitator and/or moderator needs to be able to recognize when someone has crossed the line and be able to act on it.

Let's be frank - Hardner has been angling for this job since he got here with his Mr. Nice Guy act and his damned reasonableness and facilitatory behaviour and stuff. However, he's been known to take a shot or two.

If we are looking for a ringer we don't have one. But Hardner is the best of the lot for what the job entails - he has a measure of self restraint on most occasions. (Honourable mention to GhostHacked)

As for the rest, well the place would quickly becoming BORING if we had to put the restraints on BM, Kimmy and TB et al.

I appreciate the nod. But as of late, with the way I post, I could not consider myself qualified for this position.

That simply cannot happen in this situation.

Remember, a Facilitator is NOT a moderator - they're more of a good-will ambassador. Their role is to guide and encourage forum participants to act and post with respect, not disciplining of participants.

There is a huge difference between these two roles.

It's always an option, but it's not a prerequisite to becoming a moderator.

Remember, a facilitator can participate in the day to day discussions, moderators can not. A facilitator's formal role is just to encourage reasonable debate; both through leading example and by publicly encouraging participants to keep on topic and to treat each other with respect.

Facilitators are there to help facilitate reasonable and respectful discussions.

The distinction between "moderator" and "facilitator" is not quite clear to me but Greg, if you say there is one, then I'll agree.

Whatever the title, it seems to me that we need someone who comes regularly (ie. daily) to the forum and reads reports from posters, deletes any spam, merges double threads, checks for any banned posters creating new IDs and then reminds any insulting posters of the forum rules. Am I missing something?

Who would be good at this? Dunno. I recall when Charles took on the burden of forum tasks. (For those who don't know, Charles used to post here and he was an opiniated free-thinking sort-of-libertarian.) I worried at first about what would happen, and then I frankly missed his free-thinking posts. While Charles was opiniated as a poster, he's been apparently fair and reasonable as a moderator/facilitator. I tend to treat Charles/Greg as one person so I don't really know how you two divide your tasks but Charles/Greg has done an excellent job.

I understand that Mapleleafweb is a big undertaking and IMHO, the University of Lethbridge should continue to support it. It's a useful place for students across Canada and around the world. For example Greg, I liked your initiatives to interview politicians. But I understand too that MLW requires alot of work.

But this forum is a small part of Mapleleafweb. I'm happy that U of Lethbridge has decided to continue to support at least this forum - if it won't support any longer MLW. (Do I have that right?)

-----

As to a forum facilitator/moderator/ambassador, I think smallc or Hardner would be good choices - assuming either would accept the job. Kimmy? I'd nominate Kimmy for Goddess before I'd nominate her for facilitator. Facilitator would cramp her style, and I wouldn't be able to earn any more Kimmy points.

ISTM that a good faciltator should come to the site regularly and be able to apply common sense to very practical problems. Political opinion matters little. Ideally, the facilitator could continue to post and if need be, refer tough cases to Greg/Charles.

It doesn't matter if you're a liberal or a leftist or a card carrying Nazi, so long as you abide by the rules of posting, refrain from insults and inflammatory words, and can recognize them in other posters regardless of their political views or your feelings about them.

If, on the other hand, your views of what constitutes insulting or disrespectful words is influenced by how close to your political views the poster is then you're probably not the best for the position.

My list of who would make a good facilitator was hardly all-encompassing. I would add American Woman to it. :)

so smallc are you taking the job?...you could do this with help (michael h)...maybe a day shift and a night shift?

No, I don't want it really. Like I said, I go off topic way too often, and I enjoy going off topic.

Agreed

This response shows why you don´t have a clue and would not be up for the job. You don´t like what I have to say, so I´m a troll. I have the feeling this place could turn into a clique really fast; definitely not what I signed up for.

Exactly. It would take just a bit of applied principle--nothing profound--an awareness of one's own biases (no one is free of them, obviously), and a sense of fair play.

LOL! I guess we are all trolls at one time or another, so there are no trolls at all. It is remarkable that the "troll" argument is sparked yet again while trying to calmly choose a facilitator! ;)

Besides Michael I think the only other person I'd like to see get the job would be jdobbin. He's another person who is fair and keeps his cool and has a good dose of integrity. I haven't seen him around in a long time though so I don't know if he still comes here or not.
