Promises given, promises kept.
CdnFox replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
How many tariffs did we get slapped on us when we had a conservative government? In fact was it not a conservative government that negotiated NAFTA in the first place and literally increased our trade with America by tenfold? Not to mention it was a conservative government that successfully negotiated the softwood lumber agreement We tried it and it worked. Our stupidity was going back to a left-wing government that is destroyed our country and left us literally crippled at a time when we face a significant threat. -
For sure. No carbon tax But to them gas is almost symbolic. I've noticed the outrage in the us is always higher than you'd see in similar circumstances in Canada. Or so it seems. Well that's why it's best to just lean into it and say "if you're gonna, then do it and we'll see how that goes. ANY war or major conflict hurts. But at least no one is likely to die. We would just have to weather it. Mind you we'll be in a much better position to deal with it come the fall, be nice if we could buy a LITTLE time to sort out our mess at home. What timing.

I'm sure he'd rather be talking in the parlimaent.... but trudeau cancelled that for their leadership race. Guess what the liberals spent their time talking about? You're such a hypocrite.

What we should have done isn't relevant, it doesn't change what we have to do now. To the end of my days I will hate the scumbags who voted liberal and put in the coward who is left us in this position, but this is the position we are in and it doesn't change what has to happen. And yes I absolutely know that. As to the Michaels Etc you're right we didn't punch back. And look what happened, china walked all over us, Russia invaded Ukraine, Iran and Palestine are running amok Your proposed Reenactment of Neville Chamberlain aside, Obviously giving in does not get us anywhere And nobody cares what you think about grizzly bears. This is a bully. And there is only one way to handle bullies. Honest to god I cannot believe how spineless you are about this. No matter what we have to send a clear message that we will absolutely fight back and that if he picks a fight no matter what happens to us he's getting a bloody nose. That is the only rational response And he is a hell of a lot more exposed than you're pretending. Midterms in 15 months and we can drive his inflation through the roof. If the Americans get mad over what he's doing he could find himself impeached very shortly after that if the republicans lose the house and senate

Mostly in Quebec and all of Canada got behind world war II in the end. That is a dishonesty. We haven't picked anything. We haven't imposed any Tariffs or anything at all . And in fact we did take action on his stated concern of the border. But we said is if he decides to attack us we will retaliate in kind. That is absolutely the correct response You mean if we cave to tariffs now and he knows that he can scare us into doing anything? We will be completely underwater and completely under his control. We will have surrendered our economic sovereignty. Is he paying you or something? Have you no pride is a Canadian? We will see if our freedoms and sovereignty are worth fighting for you mean. Honestly you are one of the last people I thought would be so quick to roll over and play dead for a threat to our country IF we're attacked, we fight. End of story.

Promises given, promises kept.
CdnFox replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
We'll see but quite possibly -
A smoke screen for what though. That's the question. He didn't just do it for the fun of it. There's a purpose behind this. It's possible that he was testing our reactions and resolve using the border as an excuse in anticipation of the upcoming renegotiation of the free trade agreement. There are other possibilities as well but he wants something and it's almost never what he's asking for initially

Trump blames DEI for plane crash...
CdnFox replied to godzilla's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
It says that the democrat candidates are so bad they can make anyone look good -
I'm not responsible for your personal stupidity. I've never once indicated that I love Donald, in fact I have spoken out against some of his things many times. I said he was better than Kamala and I still believe that. But being better than someone doesn't mean good, and even if he was good that doesn't mean that everything he's going to do is going to be Beyond criticism. You tend to see people through your own bigotry and hatred and that has obviously LED you to a false conclusion. I have been quite consistent and clear that I consider trump to be a flawed individual who's only redeeming quality is that he was better than the other choice. I expect his term in office Basically much like last time, a decently strong performance but certainly nothing miraculous and I still believe that's going to be the case. But he's way off base with this and it's not going to have the effect that he was hoping for. And I don't just mean tariffs with Canada, but also his threats with Mexico and other allies including the threat of military intervention to seize Greenland in Panama. That will have a destabilizing effect that will have a very negative impact on the American economy and if a trade war does happen it's not going to go nearly as well for him as he thinks. And he has to remember that in a short time he's going to have midterms. And if the public gets honked off with him because inflation is going up because of a trade war and the democrats seize the house in the senate and sufficient numbers they will absolutely find something to impeach him on and this time they will win. So we'll see how this plays out. Right now he thinks that being a mega bully will get him the deals he wants, i don't think it's going to go that way for him.

Liberals decide to import Russian oil
CdnFox replied to Army Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Sigh, so there you go @Army Guy, if you apologize the left is going to punish you and say you're a bad guy anyway. And if we're being honest your headline was actually more true than not. The gov't is allowing russians to back door their products into Canada and that is a decision they made and continue with today. The far left today has no soul or mercy to it. -
So trump gets his way right now by threatening tariffs and you think that'll be the end of it? You think he won't do the same thing in 2 months when it comes time to renegotiate NAFTA? He's already talking about things like our softwood lumber and other trade items that we have negotiated for over the years not to mention our control over our dairy and poultry Industries. If trump gets his way it will cost us billions and billions of dollars because he will keep coming back to the table and demanding the same thing knowing that we will cave. The only way to deal with a bully is to punch them as hard as you can in the face. I don't know how you don't understand this simple concept.
-
We've always agreed on war and addressing threats. Except Quebec but not much we can do about that. Everyone recognizes that this isn't something that we're picking a fight on, this is trump picking a fight with us. If we cave then we're his biatch forever, if we stand up and fight like we would with anybody who was trying to harm or take over our country then yes it's going to hurt but it's going to hurt them quite a bit too. And that sends a powerful message. This isn't about proving a point. This is about securing our sovereignty and democracy for the future and I have to say that should be important to every single Canadian. Do not kid yourself. This is going to hurt America a lot. More than most people would realize. And all of a sudden when those American voters wake up in the morning and their gas is substantially more, they can't get the wood they need to build their homes, there's a shortage of electricity and their workplace is slowing down because of lack of sales they are going to start asking themselves why the hell the USA is picking a fight with Canada and why did trump break his word to bring prices down. And the midterms are 15 months away. If the dems win the house and the senate i guarantee they'll conjure SOMETHING to impeach trump over and they'll make it stick if they control both houses with sufficient votes. So he has to worry about pissing off the 40 states where canada is their number 1 trading partner, many of whom are (possibly former) red states. We're not in as weak a position as you think

Trudeau set to stack Senate with Liberals before stepping down
CdnFox replied to CdnFox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It was kind of a joke -
Well I don't know if I would go quite that far, but you're certainly not entirely wrong either. He started off fine but then obviously realized it's going to be hard to be reelected as a moderate right-wing government and he moved closer towards the liberals in a number of issues. He's definitely running as a more of a red tory than anything at the moment. I mean at least he hasn't hired a former pedophile to set the children's sex education curriculum so that's an improvement But for sure he is definitely been more to the left than what most of us would consider conservative. But even then, he's about to win another major victory and it's kind of hard to tell him that what he's doing is bad but he keeps getting returned to office with strong majorities. And that boils down to the voter. If they supported his right of center stuff then he would do more right of center stuff

That's something the Americans forget. Our oil is already so discounted that even if they can source it from somewhere else they're going to pay a time more Worse, they're refineries are set up specifically to deal with Canadian Oil. The oil they get from the US from fracking and such is not compatible with the way that most of the refineries are already set up. They would have to retool from scratch at a great expense and time. So if our oil is costing a lot more that will show up directly at the pumps and that will severely honk off the people who represent trump's base
-
They are still projected to win in a landslide. To be blunt it might be one of the better landslides we've seen in Canadian history. But that may well be influenced by how the liberals handle this, if they handle it badly they could be wiped out. Having said that though their choices really are limited. Either going throw themselves in front of trump and beg and beg until he tells us what he wants and we give it to him or we fight back and hurt America as badly as we can and take the punishment whatever it is But make sure the Americans know that if they pick a trade war it's going to hurt them as well. This isn't just about now, this is about the next 50 years
-
Yeah, much as I hate to say it the simple fact the matter is there's only one way to deal with a bully. It's going to cause Canada a lot of pain and that's unfortunate. We're not in good shape right now after 10 years of liberals and this is the last thing we needed. But there's no getting around it. Caving to him will just make sure that he brings the same thing out every 5 minutes whenever he wants something and we can't have that
-
Well some of those things are practical and will likely happen. Truth be told this could be a blessing in disguise. It will expose some of our weaknesses to those who have been trying to cut down on some of our Industries. The new government would have every right to force through pipelines to minimize our exposure to America. There could be a strong push for the removal of all interprovincial trade barriers. People will realize we're exposed more than they thought and we need to stop thinking of the US as our friends. Harper had begun expanding our trade deals with other nations substantially. Unfortunately Trudeau has wiped out pretty much all of that but we can start building again. Will never be able to eliminate the united states entirely but we can certainly significantly reduce our dependence. It could wind up translating into the kick in the butt that we need How would you know? You're just a scumbag he tries to trade on stolen valor. Canadians will worry about Canadians
