Increased Immigration not needed, will hurt workers

Canada has the highest unemployment rate among the G7, a slow vaccine rollout, and a massive deficit. So, of course, it's time to increase immigration again! The government plans to bring over 400,000 this year, because, they say, they will help the recovery. Only there's no evidence of that. Furthermore, they're greatly lowering the requirements, which will bring in much less skilled workers, who, according to their own figures, perform much worse and rarely earn enough money to even be paying income taxes.

“It makes no sense,” says University of Waterloo economist Mikal Skuterud, who specializes in Canadian immigration and the labour market. An immigrant himself, Skuterud is joining other economists in questioning why Ottawa has officially claimed its elevated targets are “crucial to Canada’s short-term recovery.”

Even though Skuterud strongly advocates immigration, particularly for humanitarian reasons, he wonders why the Liberals this month drastically lowered the standards for the skills expected of those looking to become Canadian citizens through the country’s economic-class express-entry program.

“As an economist who has studied Canadian immigration for more than two decades, I struggle to understand how increasing immigrant entries in the midst of an economic crisis with historically high and rising levels of joblessness will aid our short-term economic recovery,” he said. “It is unusual for countries to significantly increase immigration levels during recessions, for good reason.”

“I continue to be baffled at how the ‘increased immigration is crucial for Canada’s economic survival’ narrative has taken hold of our policy discourse. I challenge anyone to find me an academic economist that studies Canadian immigration who believes this narrative,” Skuterud said.

Increasing immigration is needed for the outdated, inefficient and inept bureaucracy that runs the country. Bring educated specialists from the underdeveloped world (bleeding them from already diminishing resource); they'll find a good job through no, or little help from the government; they'll pay outrageous taxes; that will go to maintain the bureaucracy. Repeat, again and again.

Pure and simple self-preservation. Where else can you find the unthinkable trillions to keep it running? There's still a problem though the cost is going up all the time and non stop. Soon even immigration won't be able to sustain the process. Other options?

If we brought in skilled people who would earn high wages you'd have a point. And we do bring in some. But they're outnumbered by the ones working at Tim Hortons and cleaning floors and doing other low-grade jobs which put them into that ever-growing percentage of Canadians who don't earn enough to pay income taxes.

As for other options. How about we cut down on the bureaucracy and only pay for what we can afford?

The only way to start is to vote conservative. I'll grant you they're not much to write home about, but at least they're not Trudeau.

Nah, that would be too easy. The system is truly non-partisan. It's way older (and far-reaching) than any party, politician and so on. Voting wouldn't do to it one tiny bit, as it has not in 150 years.

we went down that road with Eric Nielsen.  He found 1100 departments and programmes that spent money.  The bureaucrats showed us who was actually runnung the country and he was gone overnight.  To this day unions talk about being "Nielsenized"..i.e. being found that they really serve no purpose...except their own.

The decision making bodies have lost their minds when it comes to immigration. So many born Canadians and immigrants/citizens out of work and then they import more people (even if they are skillful) from abroad at this time!!!!. Nobody dares to oppose it openly either even if they know it is wrong at this time because they fear they may be accused of racism or worse. This is a perceived democracy.

They may create a backlash against those immigrant looking population here at home when workers lose their jobs in the pandemic and see their jobs may be taken by newcomers. And honestly I can't blame them.

Isn't there some kind of mathematical principle that left to its own instruments a bureaucracy would grow infinitely large consuming any imaginable amount of resourcing and producing ever less? Like what would be any one incentive to be, forget more efficient, just less inefficient? And in this country it has been at it for 150 years...

He agrees with you, I agree with you and I am sure most of those who read your post agree with you.

But Canada will bring the 400,000 immigrants this year and maybe more in the years to come, why?

Because we are a "democratic" country.

Canada needs skillful contributing immigrants and overall it benefits all Canadians but the criteria is right immigrant at the right time. Though many immigrants are skillful workers like doctors (we see them every night in hospitals and on TV interviews) and engineers and nurses and professionals coming at the right time (when economy doing well and can absorb new immigrants) but they are also some having to go on social assistance for too long and now is not the right time when so many are looking for jobs.

I think your statement is fundamentally flawed.

It begs the following questions:

1. What is Canada, which needs immigrants?  The Canadian landscape, environment, wildlife, plants, air and water do not need any immigrants and do not benefit from them.  So take all that out of "Canada" and see what you have left.

2. "Contributing"  to what and to whom??    They do not contribute to improving my lifestyle for sure.

So using "all Canadians"  in your statement makes it look and sound like what it really is - propaganda and meaningless political bullshit that was etched into your brain by the Minister of Immigration or other phony "leaders".

If you worked with ANY of those professions, you would know that the flow of immigrant professionals with degrees based on privilege rather than merit and from cultures where integrity is simply not part of the way of doing business, you would also know that in many cases, those immigrants have damaged and/or destroyed those professions.

Best example is the Liberals' favourite criminal organization: SNC Lavalin.  They are famous in the engineering business for hiring cheap Asian (mostly Indian) engineers to fill chairs.  The result is a reputation for such horrible quality work that the only way they get business is to bribe government and corporate officials for the privilege.   I hear complaints from engineers daily of how the Indian content of many disciplines has damaged the reputation of their society, depressed wages and lowered levels of skill and trust.  If you go to the trucking industry, you will hear the same complaints as the bodies pile up on the roadside.

Yeah, they "help" Canadians alright.

A bureaucracy knows only one way to move forward: copy and repeat the past. If importing cheap professionals from underdeveloped world helped it pay for itself in the past, how else could it sustain itself going forward? Import more... you get it.

Gee, who would have thought that a system whereby immigration officers have approximately three minutes to review each application, rubber stamp it as accepted, or write a long report if they want to reject it would lead to people with phony degrees and work experiences immigrating to Canada?

If you own a house and your investment has gone up a lot as in most Canadian towns and cities that is because of rapidly increasing population.

You have never gone to a hospital or clinic where an immigrant health care worker made you well again? or called a taxi and he gave you a ride or or went to a restaurant and served by a smiling immigrant waitress or cook or eat delicious foreign food in a foreign restaurant or met a friend who was an immigrant like the other 30% of population whose companionship gave you joy If not then you are  very lonely isolated person. Life is too short for that.

This is a clear misinformation or if purposely said it is a lie.

It takes years for each application to be processed and each is being processed thoroughly and original documents and proof of each are investigated and each immigrant must pass both health and background checks. I know all these because I went through them myself so stop campaign of misinformation.  I am talking about immigration not refugees.

You discredited yourself by above statement. Everything else you say is discredited too. You made a generalization and put all immigrants in the same boat as destructive. Is this immigration you have issues with or skin color? Do you have problems with immigrant from Germany  and Sweden as well or just Africa, Asia and middle east?

The real estate prices go up due to inflation and partly due to third world immigrants who believe that paying off a mortgage on a small condo unit for life is acceptable, or living in one unit crammed with a dozen others of their kind is normal.

Don't try to sell me those smiling fast food East Indian servers; not to me.   I want to meet people of my kind.  Life is too short to live in a zoo!

And of course you did not answer any of the two questions above.  There can be no suitable answer for you
