Bryan Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 Saw American Sniper on saturday. I knew nothing about it. Never heard of Kyle, didn't know all the accounts of him being a bullshitter until I read about them in this thread. They don't surprise me at all though, because my BS detector was going off through the entire movie. It was very difficult to enjoy it as a "true story" because it really was obviously a complete work of fiction. No sir, I did not like it. Quote
overthere Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 I need you to comment on my list of films above first I did. Do you like Asghar Farhadi? Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
AngusThermopyle Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 Well Bryan although its hard to determine whether many of the things he said, or didn't say, are BS what is clear are his bogus claims of donating money to vets and his story about Ventura. In my case I tend to disregard what a person claims when they've been shown to lie about other things. Having said that I will watch the movie. I just wont run out and spend money on it. Instead I'll wait until it hits the movie channels on TV. After all I subscribe to them for just this reason. Recently the Lego movie was on, man I'm glad I didn't pay to see that big ball of crap! Michael Hardner Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 I did. Ok, I missed it. "Inherent Vice is not comparable to this list in any way. " It's pretty comparable actually. It sprawls like Chinese Bookie, it has a stoner dude like Big Lebowski, it has an incomprehensible plot like Big Sleep, it's druggy and dream-like, as with Fear and Loathing, and it occupies the same thematic and geographic space as The Long Goodbye and Chinatown ! I'm especially interested in whether you saw The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Do you like Asghar Farhadi? Hmmm... no, never heard of him or saw any of his films. overthere Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) I'm especially interested in whether you saw The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. This is the second time I refer you to my answer, above. Do you have a limit to asking the same question? I do, for answering. This is it. it has a stoner dude like Big Lebowski, Please. Inherent Vice is not in the same league as The Big Lebowski. Many movies have stoner dudes. BL was filled with wit and intelligence, both sadly lacking in Inherent Vice. Oh, and an actual plot done in well under 2 hours. it's druggy and dream-like, as with Fear and Loathing If you'd like a dreamy movie from 2014 that is far better than IV, try Only Lovers Left Alive. it occupies the same thematic and geographic space as The Long Goodbye and Chinatown ! Detective movies set in Los Angeles? Gee, that has never been done before. Hmmm... no, never heard of him or saw any of his films. I recommend The Past and A separation, both extremely well written and acted movies that explore themes a bit deeper than Inherent Vice. You know, movies that require you try a little harder. Big Guy Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Have not seen American Sniper. Am looking forward to it since I understand that it shows how America won the Iraq war. The last good one I saw was The Green Beret where John Wayne and the boys show us how they won the Vietnam war. Black Dog Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Have not seen American Sniper. Am looking forward to it since I understand that it shows how America won the Iraq war. By beating the terr'ists who were responsible for 9-11. Saddam who? Weapons of what destruction? Quote
sharkman Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 You understand wrong. It does not attempt to present the Iraqi war as a win or loss. Any other spin theories? Quote

Big Guy Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 But the USA did win in Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya etc. Didn't it? Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

GostHacked Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 I was able to catch Intersteller. 2.5 hrs that felt like 5 hours. It has some great moments, but overall the movie does not deserve the praise it is getting. It's good, but not great. Quote
Big Guy Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) I was flipping channels yesterday and noticed a movie called "Cowboys and Aliens" listed. I do enjoy watching really bad films with my grandchildren: Phoney monsters, atomic radiation and various giant insects taking turns chewing on the Empire State building. I therefore turned to the channel and we started to watch. By the end of the movie and till now, I have no idea how to take that movie. The kids seem to enjoy it but complained about the lack of gore and slime. This movie starred Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde. Ron Howard was one of the producers and Steven Spielberg as executive producer. I thought the acting to be quite good but the story line was weird. How this group of talented people would consider that a movie about Cowboys and Aliens could ever be taken seriously is a mystery to me. I am still confused. Guest Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 My two favourite genres are westerns and science fiction, (that's why I loved Firefly) but Cowboys and Aliens didn't really do it for me. It's telling that I watched it less than a year ago and I can't really remember very much about it. Quote
kimmy Posted February 14, 2015 Report Posted February 14, 2015 Well, I haven't seen 50 Shades of Grey, but Australian tv host Lisa Wilkinson has. Her review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMh-ou0TKXk I especially enjoyed her co-hosts acting as her hype team, reacting to every comment as if it was the greatest burn since the Chernobyl meltdown. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

overthere Posted February 14, 2015 Report Posted February 14, 2015 Seen two lately that I liked: A Most Violent Year, which is not very violent but a very good, quiet and beautifully rendered snapshot of New York 35 years ago. Whiplash, a 'coming of age' movie with a stellar lead performance by longtime supporting actor JK Simmonds. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
PIK Posted February 27, 2015 Report Posted February 27, 2015 The fury. Great dark tank movie. I knew a few WW2 tankers and watching this really brought back the discussions I had with some of these guys. A great anti war film like das boot.
