Meaning of Christmas becoming redundant?

Xmas is whatever you make it... stressful shopping time when you go broke... a religious holiday... a joyful time based on mythology (Santa, Jesus, etc.)

Make it whatever you want.

From the government point of view Christmas is a secular holiday. It can't really be any other way... and for most people it is treated that way as well and has been fror a very long time.

Since someone posted last year's Westjet Christmas thing I thought I'd add this year's Westjet Christmas (marketing) miracle for those who haven't seen or heard of it yet. They were hoping for 800k views. They've got over 30 million.

That's a great ROI. Not just the number of viewers but think of all the people who will be flying Westjet at Christmas time hoping for something similar.

Not just that, but the way the way the company is perceived in general. I was at a Christmas party last week and somebody started talking about this video, and within a couple of minutes the topic of conversation had turned to how much Air Canada sucks. "We're not happy until you're not happy" is apparently Air Canada's unofficial slogan. If marketing like this reinforces in peoples' minds how likeable Westjet is compared to their major competitor, that probably sells tickets at other times of the year too.

I bet the guy who said he wanted socks and underwear was kicking himself afterwards...

Let people believe or not believe in whatever they want. This thread shows how literally stupid many people are. Those of you who have posted in this thread are stupid. Grow up already and worry about things in this world that matter and stop arguing about trivial bullshit.

Bah humbug! Come'on don't be such a grinch.

This atheist wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy new Year.

Leave the commercialism behind and spend some time with your family. Be sure to put your smartphone away for a few hours. And where you go, bring some wine, and a smile, at the very least.

LOL...nothing says happy holidays like 10 family members sitting in their living room immersed in their smartphones, not bothering to talk to anyone. Have a good holiday gost.

We keep hearing about "people who get offended by Christmas", but WHO are they? I've never actually met them.

Todd Starnes over at Fair And Balanced is combing America looking for stuff he can spin into War on Christmas "news" stories. A hoax news story from an Onion.com style website went viral-- a teacher at the fictional Argon school in San Francisco had supposedly suspended a student for wishing him Merry Christmas. After the story went viral, the non-fictional and very real Argonne school in San Francisco started receiving threats of violence. State capitols where legislators enacted legislation permitting religious displays now find themselves hosting Festivus poles and Flying Spaghetti Monsters. But despite the fake news articles and Festivus poles, where is the actual "War on Christmas"? Is it the "Keep Saturn in Saturnalia" billboard, or the retailers who are using the phrase "Happy Holidays" in their advertising? What about this constitutes the "war" that the wing-nuts keep talking about?

Christian groups like American Family Association, with the help of people like Bill O'Reilly and Todd Starnes, have been pushing the idea that if someone says "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings", they're attacking Christianity. They are becoming swears or curses in the minds of some people. This is a very recent thing. Happy Holidays has been around for a long time and never caused controversy; Bing Crosby was musically wishing everyone Happy Holidays in the movie "White Christmas" over 70 years ago, as well as singing quite a few other very popular Christmas songs that had nothing to do with religion.

Boy, Santa has been around for a long time but in today's society, the Corp. World has just ruin it ,in my view, by all the sales and commercials for the kids. It seem now, that Christmas is more about buying gifts for your kids than the birth of Christ. TV, used to show movies on this but now its all about Santa. I, have adult kids, and we haven't bought gifts now for 10 years because I can't see the reason for going into debt every Xmas Instead , we get together, have a good meal and be together since they live outside of our area. I see many people with Xmas light outside and inside and I wonder what they hydro bills is going to look like, probably the same as their credit cards. Another item was when my kids realized there was no Santa and they said to me, mom, why did you lie about being a Santa?? Good question.

My power bills are just fine, thanks to my thrifty, energy-efficient LED Christmas lights.

I usually wear green stuff and get tanked on St Patrick's Day, and I'm neither Irish nor Catholic. I don't believe in ghosts or goblins or ghouls, but I always have fun on Halloween. And I'm not a Christian but I love Christmas.

As a people, we need more things that bring us together, not fewer. Every society has had traditions that help create unity. Christmas is one of the few that we have. And it's good that at least once a year people make being together their highest priority.

It's unfortunate that so many people spend themselves into distress during this time of year, or feel pressured to provide unrealistic gifts or acquire the most popular toy for their kids. People should learn to set limits, learn to communicate with their kids, learn to deal with their own emotional issues. Do you need to get your kid the unobtainable or unaffordable toy they want, or do you feel obligated to do it because you secretly fear you've failed them the other 364 days of the year?

That's exactly how I feel too.

Pete the Cat is quite popular among kids. I kind of dig him myself. And the young girls in my extended family, really seem to dig books and have someone read to them. You know something simple like a colouring book and some crayons can facilitate interaction. Board games are still good.

Aside from some things like tinker toys, LEGO, and the like, most of the stuff out there is horrible unimaginative drivel.

But as long as quality interaction happens, that is as much as you can ask for. A room full of useless toys is more than just wasted money.

Everybody gets a box of frozen glazed halibut, ling cod, and rock-fish fillets, not to mention smoked salmon and black-cod this year. I've been glazing, brining and smoking the last couple days. Now I get to watch them eat it. That's always fun.

Only two kids cried this year when I played Santa, and I'm pretty sure a couple more are getting onto me. If I'm not emotionally scarring them I'm shattering their illusions. Santa scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. I wasn't all that big on clowns either.

Christians that complain about people not celebrating Christmas correctly (i.e. that Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ) humor me considering that Christmas is essentially a variety of pagan holidays (Yule, Saturnalia, Mithras Day) that were stolen by the Christians and merged with St. Nickolas day (originally dec 6) and jesus' birthday (originally in the spring). Santa Claus was created by the Coca-cola company in the 1930's and is a merger of the norse god Odin and the byzantine saint Nickolas.

Anyway, Happy Yuletide everyone! I had a yule log this year and it was delicious.

Merry Xmas as well... I guess :)

Sounds like a yummy Xmas for your chums! (See what I did there?)

Merry Xmas Eyeball.
