Is hockey a gladiator sport?
impartialobserver replied to blackbird's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
Its a bit shocking that there has not been a single mention of the Edmonton Oilers run to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Yes, they lost in game 7 but it is hard to come back from down 3 games to 0 to force a game 7. -
My home state of Idaho used to have relatively relaxed laws concerning DUI's. Sometime in the late 90's, that changed drastically after some guy killed a girl walking on the side of the road. It was his 18th (or so) DUI offense. After that case, the penalties got much stiffer such as mandatory jail time on the 3rd offense with probable jail time on the second. I have no problem with such things. I lost a brother to a drunk driver in 2001 so it hits home a bit.

That's cool but unrelated. I was not raised in a religious household. Mom and dad believed in God but no one went to church. They worked hard and so when sunday came.. it was time to relax (go fishing, read a book, drive out to the country, etc.)

Religion is not necessary to life. One can not be religious and the same biological processes happen. Innate human nature still shows itself. If you want to be religious then that's fine much like I choose to be a huge fan of modern day rock music. I could stop listening to the music and life would carry on much the same.

Why do some applications (job, social assistance, credit card, etc) ask about race? Simple... data gathering. Everybody wants to know the gender, race, age data. We get requests all of the time about this. However, a lot of these questions can't really be answered. When your data is based on a representative survey and the sample size is small.. wanting to know even more granular detail makes it impossible or unreliable.

No single event would not exclude someone. In the US at least.. this is a first amendment issue. A parade is a form of visual expression. As long as there is not intentional nudity.. there is no crime committed. If you allow for the first amendment to exist.. then a given person is going to have to tolerate speech, content, expression that they do not agree with. I live 250 yards from a church and being an atheist.. I do not agree with them. But I leave it be. I respect that they are allowed to not be exactly the same as myself.

Just because a city sanctions a gay pride parade.. does not mean that the citizens have to acknowledge it or attend it.

I know plenty of cities and counties in the US that do not. would take me all day to list them all.

You have greater faith in humanity than I do. I see this as lather, rinse, repeat. -
Great Basin is nice.. If you have a vehicle and are willing to drive, you should check out Jarbidge. It will make you think that you went back in time to the early 1900's. Its also quite lush and green. Probably the wettest place in NV. Only drawback is that it demands that you drive 6 to 9 hours.

Global Cooling?
impartialobserver replied to Deluge's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I predict that it will come to that. The Midwest offers water and at the moment.. lower housing costs. However, the younger generation sees no value in living in Hays, KS (as an example). They want to be close to the outdoor recreation, live in a place with 300+ days of sunshine, and be near the epicenter of the entertainment industry (LA, LV, and SF). The West is mostly an expensive place to live. Housing costs are very high unless you really go out of your way to live in the Hinterlands. Mountainous terrain, desert, lots of federally owned land, and remoteness make the dynamic exist. -
Pro-Hamas Rallies in Canada

See.. you are getting it. This conflict has no light at the end of the tunnel. If I was a muslim living in Gaza, West Bank, etc... I would just move elsewhere and leave the fighting to someone else. But I know that they do not see it as such. -
Well, if you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods.. I can point you to some places that exemplify freedom.

Global Cooling?

The two strategies that the cities/counties have been using are water restrictions as to discourage ornamental lawns and using reclaimed water at parks/golf courses. That can only do so much especially when your consumer (los angeles, phoenix, las vegas, st george, fresno) are quite the distance from the supplier (Colorado River, Owens Valley, Yosemite Valley). Lots of evaporation coupled with arcane water rights that honestly should be renegotiated but that is going to be quite the battle. Old crusty ranchers living out on the desert can put up quite the fight. -

Sorry but not playing your game. I can state reality but not have an inclination. In conclusion, in 20 years.. we will have this same discussion and nothing will have changed. -
Global Cooling?
impartialobserver replied to Deluge's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
True. Temps have risen in the SW United States but still seeing population growth and folks still do ok. The big change has come in the amount of water in reservoirs. Some of it is increased temps but a lot of it is population that the land has never seen before. Before Europeans.. the place that we now call Las Vegas was empty. So was the Inland empire of Southern Cal. Los Angeles was very sparsely populated. Now they are major metro areas with a combined 30 million people living there. The areas that we now call Reno, Boise, Bend OR, Salt Lake City.. we are also mostly empty if not completely. The stretch on interstate 80 from Reno to Salt Lake city was 100% empty when the first settlers came. -
Pro-Hamas Rallies in Canada

that is clear but I am not going to support Israel nor Hamas. Clear enough? I already stated that I have no dog in the proverbial fight. Not sure why it needs repeated. -

I am not sure how you can't comprehend this.. I do not care if you support Israel or not. Do you understand this simple sentence? The point is not if the battle SHOULD (again, not the point) but if it will or not. My point is that it will continue... clear enough?
