  1. 100 years and we have only had the internet since roughly the mid - 90's. Unless you can show that we had public internet in 1971 or so. "review bombing" that you spoke of is purely an internet creation. Suing someone brings the state, city, county into the matter. This gives the defendant the perception of being ganged up on. What comes next? Oh.. that's right, the folks who support the defendant paint the picture of them being oppressed. Is this misrepresenting things? Oh yes. Nothing motivates or galvanizes a group more than a perceived attack. I would rather punish the baker with hitting him in the wallet. I have seen this approach work. What happened? The two businesses involved went away and the owner never resurfaced.. I have access to micro level qcew data and can look someone up by name, ssn, ui acct #, etc.
  2. But had the losing team played better in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter.. the need for the field goal would not be there. But to place the sole blame on the kicker... is just more binary thinking. The other 21 players on the field could have played better on the 90+ prior plays... when my one and only team in sports.. Boise State Broncos of college football lose, I do not blame the one play at the end. The missed FG by Kyle Brotzman in 2010 against Nevada would not have been needed had the OL blocked better and not made Kellen Moore throw to the 3rd and 4th options on his route tree in the 3rd and 4th quarter.
  3. much like the folks who say that the one and only reason that a team loses a game is the result of one play at the end. Narrowing it down to one play and therefore making binary (1 vs. 0, succeed vs. do not succeed) keeps it simple enough for their limited intellect.
  4. both sides play the game of supposing one data point describes the whole... one abnormally cold day in February supposedly says that there is global cooling. Its quite silly but internet forum posters are not world renowned for their big picture thinking.
  5. I will agree that he does impact the price but not completely. However, we leave out the factors all so conveniently.. as to why? Simple human nature. Keep it simple.
  6. to make the analogy one to one.. does knowing the results of a preseason NHL Game tell you who is going to win the Stanley Cup? I am the most casual of NHL fan (mostly due to lack of time to watch games) and was bummed to see the Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs get eliminated. Was thinking it would have been interesting to see WPG vs. TOR in the Stanley Cup Final
  7. Been to Moscow, ID a few times. I grew up in Boise. I detect that you have not been there or not for a long time and are relying on second hand media for this. This sounds a bit hyperbolic. The point being (interesting how you dodge this) is the reputational risk and damage is greater if you make it public than if you take legal action and therefore galvanize the opposition. I have seen the prior method work.
  8. No but the back story is not important. Knowing poll results in June does not help get a feel for who wins in November. This is like a preseason Ap top 25 in college football.
  9. Impacting something does not mean that someone has 100% control. Partially is not a synonym for completely. However, the POTUS is the most convenient target. FYI.. when you compare gas prices on first day in office versus last day... the gas price has risen during every President.. even Trump. If Trump had such control.. how could he let this happen?
  10. Maybe they would and maybe they would not. Either way, the current situation is unsustainable if someone truly wants peace. At present.. it is simply a matter of lather, rinse, and repeat.
  11. I, for one, do not believe in human caused AGW. That being said... we received an inch of snow on saturday, may 4. That is not uncommon in Northern Nevada. Mammoth lakes in CA received 8 inches. We could use 8 inches of snow. Now the braindead drivers would disagree and make things way more interesting than need be.
  12. Took a history of the middle east course in college. What a muddled, bizarre story it is. Jews as a religion predate Islam. However culturally the arabs/berbers predate the modern Israelite by a few thousand years. This is not like one side is solely the aggressor and the other is simply sitting there taking the punishment. They have both attacked the other numerous times. The list of grievances is long for both sides. Having an established sovereign state of Palestine seems like the best solution if you want peace. However, neither side can agree to that.
  13. I love it how certain ones on here believe that the POTUS has full control of gas prices. They choose the price and everything falls into place after that.
  14. I truly do agree with the gay couple but find that legal action is not always the best way to achieve the goal. Legal action creates faux victims and galvanizes them. However, by simply going somewhere else and therefore not giving them your business and spreading the word... you do something far more impactful. Your other examples are a bit hyperbolic. Yes, if they lived in shoup, Idaho.. they would have no alternatives. But they do not.. I did a quick google search and found that they had dozens of alternatives within 30 miles.
  15. No, I would not have. Another aspect to modern politics that I thoroughly loathe is the faux victimhood. Yes, the gay couple were met with resistance but they could have easily have went elsewhere. If I was the couple.. I would not let one religious zealot ruin my day. I would have brushed him off like pocket lint, found someone else, and then wrote a negative review. The review would let others of like mind to myself know that he is not welcoming. That is free enterprise at its finest. The usual line is "I should not have to do that". The "that" is choosing an alternative. When I point out that they have a choice.. the indignation and whining is epic. You should not have to choose an alternate route to work but the interstate is closed going westbound so you can either figure out another way or sit in traffic and whine. I find that most people today prefer the latter. as an example, I have two websites (one political like this and one centered around music) that recently went live... I love the fact that I do not allow comments. I have the right to block trolls, hackers, and ignorant types.
  16. First, one does not have to register as anything. Yes, you register to vote but you can leave the affiliation blank. All it really does is let you vote in the primary for a given party. I made the mistake of selecting independent. It is a mistake for myself because I openly show my distaste for politics and by registering as an independent.. both parties flood you with pamphlets, ads, and folks coming to your door. However, folks like to register as republican or whatever as a virtue signal. Its like going out in public with a band t-shirt on.
  17. I will wait until late September to truly get a feel for who will win.
  18. You epitomize what I am talking about. No bother with fixing your own life.. elect the right politician and they will fix it for you
  19. unlike other issues in life.. survey data overwhelmingly shows that what folks wanted was for it to be over with. As soon as mandates were lifted.. it stopped being the lead story. The same occurred at my office. We went from producing a flood of covid-era data such as initial claims by week, continued claims by week, etc. to ceasing production in one week. When the mandates were in place, the unemployment insurance claim data was massive and front and center unlike non-covid times.
  20. in the modern world. no one takes personal responsibility. Instead.. just blame it on management at work or politicians.
  21. You can adjust to the price. Spend less, get a better job, work more hours, etc. Largely one's predicament is based on one's decisions are the deciding factor. I know.. i need to join the modern world and start blaming politicians for everything.
  22. When I have been in a rough spot financially.. my first finger point is not to the president. I guess.. I am different on that front.
  23. I would vote for the following... have every cabinet dept trim its budget by 1% every year for the next 5. The second item is that use or lose it grant funding would cease. To have where someone can request less funds one year and more next year... and so on would trim the budgets greatly.
  24. There are few certainties in life. However, some of them are the sun rising, taxes, death, and violent conflict in the middle east. This current round will simmer down after awhile and then in a few years.. it will tick back up. Lather, rinse, and repeat.
