  1. So many very important changes were made over the past 4 months that it feels more like 4 years have passed. While we / you are at it, I will recommend even more radical changes. The Gulf of Mexico was renamed to the Gulf of America, Straight of Hormuz is now "Straight of Arabia" or "Straight of Iran", but most definitely not "Straight of Hormuz" ! Venezuela is now "State 51". Greenland? Has to be "State 52" , unofficially, while Canada and Cuba are "States 53 and 54" also unofficially. Iran? - "State 55", of course. The president has crowned himself to be king; the foreign premiers and presidents are formally reduced to governors. Why not change the name of the country too, while we are at it? "United States of America" or USA does not sound like a country name! It is so easily confused with UPU - the Union of Postal Workers ; UN - United Nations or so many other Unions and United things including the United Arab Emirates, UAE (which voluntarily or , most likely, involuntarily followed the same stupid naming concept as the USA and UK). A name is something like "Cuba", "Uganda", "Brazil", Somalia, Bolivia. Think about how nice and romantic "Venezuela" sounds. The country cannot be called "America" because this name refers to two continents! And on the north one, USA is only one of the three major countries there, not even the largest by landmass. The value system in the country changed. The legal system changed. Moral values changed. The way the country conducts business internationally changed. What can better reflect the changes than the name? If we insist on the word "United" and want to be straightforward with the world, a proper modern name will be "United States of the Pirates" or even better 'United Pirate States" - UPS. Darn! That would be a problem too! It will be confused with United Parcel Services ! Well how about using Trump's name? Ain't that smart? It goes well with everything, especially real estate. The new country can be called "Trumpomelania" Ain't that beautiful? It reminds me of olden days Mesopotamia. Sounds royal and grand! But to please the king even more we can simply call the country "Trumplandia" . This way citizens can be referred to as "Trumplans" , Oh boy! Now if you have a new country name, it goes without saying we will need a new flag. What better flag for the new country and values than one of the two depicted below? And the king? When is he going to be formally crowned and what crown should we put on his heavy head? What awards are we going to present him with? The king does one thing best - it is to shit. The king has an amazing capacity to shit on anyone and everyone at the same time - both inside and outside the border and across all oceans. The king's shit is of the best , rarest , light and stinky quality. It can be molded into a crown, frozen in a freezer and put on the king's head daily. It will melt by the power and heat of his wheel spinning brain, cooling the latter off. Jesus approves all of these changes! After seeing how the Pope fared, Jesus is willing to serve Pig Hegseth in exchange for leniency from the King.

  2. You guys may recall the last year Nova Scotia enacted a travel ban into his backcountry because of fire risk. I said at the time that it was probably not constitutional and was a gross over reaction and severely inappropriate. Those on the left rushed to defend the action stating that we have no right to go on to public land or into the backcountry and the government could do what it's wants and if a bunch of rednecks had to stay home and stay out of the woods too damn bad. Well, as is off in the case it turns out I was quite correct and the courts agree that the reaction was grossly disproportional and unconstitutional We will see if they appeal but that behavior was never okay. The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia struck down the province’s August 2025 "woods travel ban" on April 17, 2026. The court ruled that the government acted unreasonably and failed to consider the Charter rights of Nova Scotians when it prohibited entry into nearly 80% of the province’s land during a period of high wildfire risk. CTV News +2 Key Findings of the Ruling Lack of Charter Consideration: The court found no evidence that the Minister of Natural Resources considered Section 6 mobility rights or Section 7 liberty rights before issuing the blanket proclamation. Unconstitutional Process: While recognizing that governments can act in emergencies, the court held that the decision-making process was fundamentally flawed because it did not balance the ban’s impact on residents' rights with its public safety objectives. Arbitrary Nature: Evidence highlighted that the ban prohibited low-risk activities like hiking while allowing high-risk industrial activities (e.g., forestry and mining) to continue under permits, which the challengers argued was irrational and arbitrary. Canadian Constitution Foundation +4 Background of the Case The Proclamation: Issued on August 5, 2025, by Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton, the ban prohibited travel in all woods—including private land—to prevent wildfires during a historic drought. Heavy Fines: Violations carried a maximum penalty of up to $25,000 (plus fees) or six months in prison. The Challengers: The case was brought by Jeffrey Evely, a Canadian Armed Forces veteran with PTSD who deliberately walked into the woods to receive a fine ($28,872.50) so he could challenge the law. He was supported by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) and the Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF).

  4. 11 years ago Marco Rubio spoke about the long-term ramifications of the JCPOA. It was going to provide Iran with the cover to: build a nuclear program at scale, with a collection of facilities capable of making large quantities of weapons-grade Uranium very quickly build a MASSIVE ballistic missile program, large enough to even provide ballistic missiles to small tribes of people with large terrorist populations, like the Houthis - they are the only large-town-sized group of people on earth to have ballistic missiles. build a massive, sophisticated drone stockpile build anti-aircraft radar systems, missile batteries, etc, to keep American forces away create a large, purpose-built, fast-attack craft navy to keep America's navy out of the gulf accumulate a fleet frigates with anti-air, submarine, and surface to surface capabilities supply Hamas and Hezbollah with massive stockpiles of rockets to fire at Israel What Marco Rubio understood 11 years ago, and committed to the public record in that now-famous speech, which the Dems still don't understand to this day, was the fact that the JCPOA provided cover for Iran to accumulate a conventional military, and accompanying well-stocked terrorist armies, with enough power to prevent Iran from being bullied out of building their nuclear weapons program at some point in the near future. Sure, this year, the US and Israel managed to pull off both the greatest and the most historically significant military victory in the history of planet earth to this point, but it's hard to say just how close Iran came to victory this year... The point could be made that, if Hezbollah fired their 150,000 rockets at the same time that Hamas was firing their 50,000 rockets, they could have overwhelmed Israel's Iron Dome and maybe this would have been America alone vs Iran. Or maybe Iran was a month or so away from installing more advanced anti-air defence systems from Russia or China which would have secured victory for Iran. Or it's possible that if America just had a bad day with the availability of E3-Sentry (AWAC) planes or other electronic warfare planes, maybe they would have lost an aircraft carrier and support for the war would have zeroed. Hell, if you listen to CNN today, Iran is still winning this war right now. But this much is certain: if Trump didn't do this, and the Dems gained the WH in 2028, then Iran definitely would have gotten to the point of having ICBM's and nuclear weapons. Building bomb shelters in America would have become normal again in this decade. Bottom line: Marco Rubio's ability to forecast the future that would be created by America relying on the JCPOA, from all the way back in 2015, still surpasses the average Democrat's ability to understand the present, even with the benefit of both hindsight and current military intelligence.

  5. President Donald J. Trump has directed a bold and decisive U.S. naval blockade to counter Iranian aggression and restore safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz — a masterstroke of American leadership that showcases a level of power and strength the world has never before witnessed. As this historic action unfolds, America’s record-breaking energy production is providing a critical lifeline to the world. Thanks to President Trump’s American energy dominance agenda, the U.S. stands as the world’s top energy producer and exporter — ready to supply reliable, abundant energy to nations cut off from Middle Eastern crude. https://www.whitehouse.gov/releases/2026/04/president-trumps-powerful-leadership-highlights-american-strength-as-energy-dominance-delivers-global-stability/ I like it, and want to see further steps taken.

Just a side shout out to Westcanman who started this thread. 229 pages and it's kept us laughing through all kinds of times good and bad, and strangely when you go look through it its like a weird time capsule of the events of the day. I wish we could download the thread and have it as a record of what people were laughing at through the times.

  8. We should call the US bluff and see how they would implement this if Canadians supported it. That’s how the US should’ve marketed it to Canadians. We only see it as turning over self-determination to dysfunctional Washington in a self-centred US, with no demonstrated understanding of the complexity of Canada and its jurisdictions, which would all have to remain jurisdictions (10 provinces/states and 3 territories) with different national policies pertaining to all of Canada in language, culture, and public policies that differ from the US across Canada, handled federally in Ottawa. There’s no democratic way of ignoring those, and imposing control against the wishes of the people undermines the US raison d’être. As stated many times, the best case scenario for US trade policy with Canada is an economic union between the two countries that allows free movement of goods, residents and workers, with an understanding that residents follow the local laws and cannot access certain services, perhaps until minimum length of residency and/or work requirements are met. Over time the duplication between policies and departments can be reduced between the two countries, such that the economy is a de facto single entity providing new opportunities for the citizens of both countries. As of now Canadians are running away from the US, so I don’t see how greater integration can be sold today. The current isolationist US also doesn’t seem interested in sharing or compromise. I think Canada should simply carry on with its economic plan until the US trade extortionists are run out of town at mid-terms. In any event, the US is fighting battles on too many fronts right now, especially overseas. Every time a clown like Lutnik shoots off his mouth insulting Canada, Canadians put a gone fishing sign on their door. Damn right.

  29. I don't believe that for a second.... the facilities were but there was too much telegraphing and bagpipe playing to safely assume it wasn't moved to safety. The Iranians are smarter than you seem to think. We're talking about (aprox) 440 Kgs of enriched uranium at about 60%.... more at less enrichment of course but 440 Kgs is enough for 29 warheads once 90% enrichment is achieved. Based on assessments none of us will get to see for 20 years, I'm guessing Israel was locked and loaded. As I mentioned above, had the US not participated and simply watched as Israel acted unilaterally, the mess and pain would have been much wider, much deeper, and you would have been right here singing an entirely different song. Going from 60% to 90% is a distance measured in months. You really need to give this more thought.

  30. And to make it worse, he was denied several times and had to go "shopping" for it. The fact that different standards of assessment can be applied within the framework of existing laws is something that should concern all regardless of their general position on MAID... especially with an expansion of MAID eligibility on the horizon. I'm starting to wonder who I should be most afraid of here, government, voters, or doctors. I'm leaning toward voters at present.

  31. This could be a book. There is only a limited list of weapons (they possess) that haven't been used offensively, such things as prototypes, submarine launched cruise missiles come to mind and there are a few others that I don't think were very practical anyway. Unfortunately, previous misadventure suggests they're a fan of proxy enabled attacks, maybe because it provides a level of deniability to the regime but regardless, it still fits with their rhetoric and it remains a concern because of that. Many analysts share your opinion about defensive intentions and deterrence... they'll suggest that the risk of existential retaliation is sufficient to keep them in check or that political and religious constrains inside Iran would prevail. Personally, I can't get there without choking... you would have to present a clear and compelling case that my fears of premeditated offensive use (by the regime or proxies) are groundless. At best (and I mean best) I would see the deterrent effect of a nuclear arsenal as a green light for orders of magnitude worse behaviour on their part and particularly on the part of aligned proxies. If nothing else, the price they've already paid in developing the capability seems (to me) at odds with a purely defensive ideology.... it's arguably been their undoing. How difficult would it have been for them to be the shining example of a peaceful, moderate and wealthy Islamic state. I think even I could have managed that on their behalf. Never mind Trump, forget about time machines, and simply deal with the present.... how do you square their aggressive rhetoric and litany of past sins with a "peaceful quest" for defensive nuclear weapons and what makes you think the deterrence you say they seek isn't a bridge to even greater mischief on their part. Since you're asking people to accept your opinion on this maybe an explanation of "why the hell would I" is in order...

  32. That was the point really, and personally, I find the level of overlap worrisome especially given the current political climate. Regardless of differing perspectives though, I'm surprised you don't. I think the difference in AI results is subtle and likely the result of wording of the input question. The parallel between cult status and the Taliban fighter isn't a huge leap (IMO) even if political/religious motivations are indeed the ultimate objective. For a group that is largely illiterate and can't find Canada or the US on a map of the world, their belief structure certainly strikes me as cultish in the extreme and the difference is at a technical and systemic level... the average Taliban fighter hasn't spent a lot of time meditating on. the distinction.

  33. The AI critter saved me a bunch of typing, too busy to add my own feeble thoughts for now but this should be sufficient. Don't let your hatred of Trump influence strategic and tactical thinking, this shouldn't be a partisan issue. Even if Iran didn't use nuclear weapons, the deterrence factor it provides would have green lighted a wave of proxy attacks with limited response options at the source/supplier. Israel would never have gone for it. To prevail here you would have to show that their fears were groundless... a tough sell IMO but best of luck with ti. Legitimacy and international law: U.S. or coalition action can provide broader legal and political justification (UN/coalition backing, diplomatic cover), reducing accusations of unlawful aggression. Burden-sharing and resources: The U.S. brings substantial military assets (intelligence, long-range strike, logistics, air refuelling, carrier strike groups, missile-defense networks) that improve operational reach and sustainability. Deterrence and escalation control: Joint planning and combined capabilities can better shape deterrence messaging and coordinated de‑escalation channels with third parties, reducing risks of uncontrolled escalation. Risk distribution and domestic politics: Shared responsibility reduces political and casualtyrisk for any single state; it helps both governments manage domestic opposition to militaryaction. Intelligence and targeting accuracy: U.S. intelligence (SIGINT, overhead ISR, satellite reconnaissance) improves target identification and reduces collateral-damage risk. Regional partner management: U.S. involvement can help coordinate with Gulf states andNATO partners to secure basing, overflight rights, and regional defenses. Military scale and sustainment: A campaign against Iran’s dispersed and layeredcapabilities (missiles, air defenses, naval forces, proxies) likely requires large, sustained,multi-domain operations beyond Israel’s logistic depth. Post-strike stabilization and escalation mitigation: The U.S. can provide broader diplomatic, economic, and military cushion to manage fallout (sanctions, humanitarian aid, regionalsecurity arrangements). Signal to adversaries: U.S. participation conveys stronger deterrent signaling to Iran and itsproxies, potentially reducing retaliatory incentives.

  39. It's coming though, and to Europe too; we'll run significantly behind them I think. it's inevitable, most backlashes are fear based and the degree of backlash is proportional to the fear threshold of average voters. With sufficient incentive, they'll willingly trade previously defended principles and values for the promise of safety and rationalize it (at least initially) as a temporary condition. Fear is the most powerful IO tool available. Fear of disease, fear of financial hardship, fear of "others," fear of violence, there's a long list and fearful people are usually angry too. They resent being fearful and they resent the people who made them so. They want someone to blame for that and they'll often defer to a leadership contender who says: "follow me, I have the solution." At a minimum they usually demand and support regulations they never would have believed they would... and in fairness to them, they never would have if they hadn't been frightened enough in the first place. Later, when the fear and anger have faded, the memory of it provides a reset or creep in the level of intrusion they're willing to accept. It's how the bar is moved incrementally. The addition of anger is cool because there's an and/or component to it. it sustains momentum and tends to cement both support and opposition. Debate becomes rancorous, insulting, polarized, and positions harden.... usually no amount of evidence, discussion or even court rulings after the fact can sway positions based on fear and/or anger, especially both. The average person could read about IO nudges and techniques and they'd probably say: "no way, they would never fall for this" but the nudges are incremental and nudges don't (necessarily) rely on fear, they provide the creep that was always intended. As a for instance, MAID isn't fear based... as originally proposed it would (I think) most certainly pass muster with Canadians, BUT, if the current and projected MAID situation was part of the initial packaging there is no way it would IMO. The difference between its grudging acceptance now and outright rejection had it been part of the initial offering is the creep factor. It's not an accident. Remember when mental health and disability activists warned of the slippery slope that has actually come to pass? They were initially deemed to be tinfoil hatters and conspiracy theorists... now their concerns are being hotly debated as if heard for the first time.
