You can’t just declare anyone you dislike an “enemy combatant” to make killing them legal. In what way are unarmed people thousands of miles away from your shores and not engaging in combat a “combatant”? Per my earlier post Trump will be pardoning someone who flooded USA with hundreds tons of cocaine why isn’t he an “enemy combatant”? Ronald Reagan’s goons like Ollie North flooded USA with cocaine (or allowed it to be flooded) for their Iran-Contra scam. They got pardons from a Republican president too. That’s the real “sedition” not Kelly accurately telling servicemen they can ignore illegal orders. Why do some people get summary executions and others get pardons?

That's my default position on this as well, at the end of the day Canadians should (and ultimately will) procure what they deem to be appropriate and what they're willing to pay for. Just my opinion, but I see the discussions taking place now as part of a collective decision making process that will have long term effects. I hope Canadians look beyond the horizon and consider the size of the country vs the current (and projected) size of the military whilst keeping sovereignty top of mind. In that context I'd simply suggest that maximizing integration with the US (NORAD) and other allies (NATO) makes sense in world where stealth and seamless integration are, and will continue to be, force multipliers. While I understand (and support) the desire to maximize economic benefits for Canadians and get the concerns over US control of virtually all proprietary aspects of the F35, I hope that long term sovereignty considerations will ultimately remain in sharper focus than purely cost and economic benefits. As I see it, the analysis was already done, the decision already made and a procurement process that was already under way was stayed for purely political reasons. Not that we shouldn't do that if it's warranted, only that we shouldn't do it based on emotional reactions to Trump or a temporary trade relations dust up between neighbours. The whiff of corruption has been hanging in the air around Parliament since Confederation - a legacy of the Westminster system of government probably. I'm well aware of the inadequacy of Conservatives when it comes to doing anything about it. That's why I prescribe process guardians, cameras, microphones and charges and jail time for offenders - real measures as opposed to the usual catch-and-release program almost all white collar criminals have come to expect as their due. Why do you keep voting for Conservatives given how useless they've proven to be at curbing corruption? I am not concerned with his flying as much as I am concerned by his approval of pipelines and dismantling environmental protection, rescinding oil tanker bans and all. I read the article. The thing is, to say it is cheaper is absolutely false. Once infrastructure is built, once logistics are established, once all training aircrew and ground crew are finished, once parts and overhaul facilitates are incorporated, ... then maybe the Grippen could be, but not a given. The most hard-boiled portion of MAGA traces its roots back to the crowd that George Wallace split the so-called American left with decades and decades ago. After Wallace's defeat his followers then wandered the political landscape and followed the Thurmond Stroms, Ross Perots and Tea Partiers around until finally settling on MAGA and the Republicans. Again in theory, if they follow MTG off the same cliff Wallace did they'll drag the Republicans with them. There's a more underlying fundamental pendulum swinging back and forth now.
