Yesterday there was over a million Covid cases in the US, that we know of. Each day the provinces test new record numbers of Covid cases and we hunker down waiting for the other shoe to fall: a rapid rise in admissions to the ICU’s. Only it hasn’t quite worked out that way. Hospitalizations have risen but the stays are shorter and almost everyone who gets Omicron, representing about 95% of Covid cases, recovers within a week. The ICU’s have lost some capacity but aren’t anywhere near full on average (Ontario with 1100 ICU beds has about 270 in use). The bigger issue causing us to “slow the spread” by putting students back online and adding restrictions is the fact that we’re testing so many people who we’d never know were positive without the tests, people who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. Stop testing these people and they’d be working. The health workers administering the useless tests could actually help highly symptomatic patients. The time is here to focus our health care on treating very sick people, and not just people sick from Covid. Let people live normal unmasked lives, seeing people, going out, travelling, and taking care of their many other needs. The vast majority of our vulnerable population is fully vaccinated and has access to boosters. Those who are more vulnerable can take extra precautions. Mask up if you want to. Many people have had Omicron and many more will get it. Eventually just about everyone will and the consequences for our young and vaccinated population are cold or flu-like. We’ll be fine. It’s time to declare Covid-19 endemic and end restrictions.

Canadians love Socialism. They demanded and got a public health care system that is now unable to fulfil it's mandate and provide care for all Canadians on a timely basis. There are thousands of people in need of cancer or heart surgeries and other things that have been put on standby waiting lists. Reports are that thousands have already died this way across Canada during the last two years. So it doesn't matter if you have a little money saved up for retirement or whatever, you still can't get care if you have been sidelined. But if you get Covid, you will be treated right away. What ever happened to the principle in the Health Care Act of universal access to health care? That law doesn't seem to mean much or carry much weight in this pandemic. In Socialism, the greater number of what the majority think is all that counts. If your situation doesn't fit into the mold that the powers that be have designed, you just get steamrolled over. That's Socialism at it's best. Socialism is like a long freight train which will stop for nothing or anybody.

I agree. So the gov policy is likely flawed. However, it's still a constitutional policy. The court ruling is terrible and way, way outside their bounds. An employer decides what their merit requirements should be, not the courts. And there is no racial discrimination happening here whatsoever. If there is then virtually all of job hirings by all employers are discriminatory.

Not only is the hospitalization rate projection high, omicron hospitalizations last less than 48 hrs in the vast majority of cases. The virus originated in China, possibly from the virology lab in Wuhan. China didn't cooperate when this virus was spreading out from China and refused to allow the world to have a serious investigation on the origin of the virus. Democratic countries like Canada have mismanaged the pandemic all the way through and are still doing a poor job, while China because of it's totalitarian system is able to enforce strict lockdowns and take measures to stop spread with no notice. The price of being able to do that is of course a loss of freedom and living under totalitarianism. Democratic countries enjoy freedom to a large extent, but must pay the price in a pandemic of this sort with all the different and constantly changing measures and half measures governments take to deal with it. Because of the fact a significant percentage of the population in Canada has chosen not to get vaccinated, and other poor measures taken by government, this pandemic is likely to continue on for a long time with ever new variants coming. I guess that is the price of living in a democracy. Tough measures are difficult to impose and courts are divided on how far authorities can go, and politicians who try to do it are tarred and feathered and will likely pay a big price politically. Division is rampant.

The problem is the health care system is in a crisis with all the Covid patients and innocent vaccinated Canadians needing heart and cancer surgery and other surgeries are being put on hold. They are being deprived of healthcare which according to the Health Care Act is supposed to be accessible and universal for everyone. Non-Covid medical patients are being treated as second class citizens in Canada. Disaster is already here.

The promise of exiting the pandemic is always squelched by a new variant or wave. People have stopped questioning the necessity of such large scale restrictions, shutdown, and expenditures on what has become a mild disease. Two years ago the public wouldn’t believe such state controls could be imposed so easily and persist for so long, but the people have lost control over their own governance. Our restricted freedoms have little to do with the health threat of Omicron. We are dealing with the fallout of our own measures. Staffing shortages are caused by endless testing and screening that makes perfectly healthy people and their contacts stay home because they’ve tested positive. People are being manipulated into believing that persecuting a small unvaccinated minority and providing endless pharmaceuticals will end restrictions. Have people lost their minds? Ending restrictions and focusing on treating severe illness is a choice. Unnecessary restrictions and violations of people’s rights and freedoms are the new normal in Canada. We wait like mindless dummies for Dr. Tam and other health puritans to direct our governments to tell us how much risk we should accept and how free we deserve to be. Sad.

Sorry, but the biggest single reason Cubans are poor is because of communism. The Cubans can deal with any other dictatorship they want.
