I usually fish this time of year and usually catch fish. But not this year. Few fish left for a variety of reasons. Garbage along the highways, however is in abundance. And I discovered that I do not care much if I have a fish at the end of the line or a soiled diaper at the end of my litter picking stick; both are a measure of success. My rough estimate for our "virgin" Northern British Columbia roads running through what used to be breathtaking scenery is that you can fill up a bag every 50 to 100 meters doing both sides of the road. If you see 1 item, you find at least twenty items when looking around. The most common items are beer cans, followed by McDonalds cups with a plastic lid, straws, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, cigarette boxes, plastic bags, auto-parts, tires, container lids, lunch boxes and trays. Diapers are not that uncommon; found 3 of them today; I sometimes catch 3 steelhead on a good day. Went up along a forestry road in the middle of nowhere in the Nass valley and in the 2km I still found two bags of plastics, cans and other garbage! You'd think if this is a result of a few bad apples, the rest of us, the cautious ones will be able to clean after them and live in a tidy place. Since this is not the case, I have to assume that the majority of our population are bad apples with just a few good ones here and there who are drowning , like me, in this crap. Since fish are disappearing (surprise surprise), I am convinced that a day will come when those morons chucking their garbage where they see fit, will be served that soiled diaper for dinner and that old bottle of engine oil for a drink! In the past two weeks I have removed over 12 bags full of garbage. Still a drop in the sea!2 points

It makes sense to you? How?. Using your reasoning all guns should be banned. How do you know the difference between any gun let alone a toy or real one let alone an assault rifle from a non assault rifle? You clearly do not. So you make no sense. You are hyped on thinking any weapon is evil. No law can not be based on subjective fear perceptions to make sense. You are being emotionally manipulated by a politican playing your fears.2 points

If you do know what you're talking about, you'd be aware that Karl Marx wrote Capital to explain how capitalism functions/not to provide solutions. His goal was to first understand the problem, and he didn't live long enough or have the where-with-all to create a similar expansive work on how everything should function. In his later writings, he called upon others, who were younger, he inspired, to pick up the torch and create socialist societies. And Marx understood capitalism much, much better than David Ricardo and the shills for the business class in the 20th century.2 points

23 people have been murdered with legally owned fire arms in the last 30 years....thats less than 1 per year, with 37 million people in the country I think your odds of being killed by a legal fired arm is next to impossible... Why don't you just read the fire arms act, and all the controls we have on fire arms right now...then tell me your at risk... you have a better chance of getting run over by a drunk driver or throwing yourself off a bridge... or maybe you can just stay under your bed for the next 2 years until the bad guns are collected...How can Canadians be so gullible...2 points

So the Trudeau government is set to ban a bunch of macho-looking rifles in Canada, even though they really don't do anything a lot of other rifles do, and even though everyone involved in policing recognizes that almost all illegal firearms come across the US border anyway. The cost will be $250 billion up front and another $150 million a year for for years. But we all know it will be a lot higher. It always is. And the reason for this billion dollars is not really a reduction in crime or the illegal use of firearms, it's to buy popularity for the Liberal party among urban progressives who know nothing about firearms except they don't like them. The government is exploiting the Nova Scotia tragedy for crass political gain despite the fact the killer had no license and used illegal weapons which can be easily obtained because the government refuses to do anything about weapons smuggling, or the illegal sale, purchase or ownership of firearms. Remember this government passed more gun control legislation in 2018 and still hasn't' implemented it because the point was to be seen to be passing the legislation. They know the legislation won't do a thing anyway, but they got the good publicity for passing it, which is all this style over substance government ever cares about. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-ottawas-gun-ban-to-target-ar-15-and-the-weapon-used-during/#comments1 point

This week is the so-call "May 1st Golden Week" in China, which means nationwide mandatory holidays from May 1st to May 5th. The authority estimates that over 100 million people will, locally or nationwide, go out for tour, shopping, dining, etc. Recently the central and provincial governments cautiously left most restricts which were put on during Wuhan outbreak and lengthen the holiday from 3 days to 5 days to encourage consumers spending more money to boost domestic market meanwhile also put on some restricts on tourism resorts and restaurants by requiring them not running over 30% of their full capacities to reduce the chance of a possible major outbreak or 2nd wave. If the government's strategy succeeds, the government and common people will be more confident on backing to normal life and China will lead on recovering form the economic recession caused by the pandemic and China will have to hear more harsh words from Trump, because of his frustration of course . If the strategy fails, there will be a 2nd wave which will be more disastrous than the 1st one. When we are waiting to see the results, lets watch some video to see what's going on in China now: 1. A Wuhan resident uploaded a video showing his and his wife's life on May 1st in Wuhan city. (At 5:02 when he was eating, he said "It's good without wearing a mask. I'm really tired of it") 2. A Taiwan TV channel reports tourism resorts in Hunan, Shanxi and Hangzhou province. 3. Another Taiwan TV channel reports a tourist resort in Shandong province, Beijing and Shanghai city. 4. Someone uploaded a video showing a tour to a park in the outskirt of my home city Beijing: So if China government did lie on the extent of the outbreak in China, which means there would be a million infected like US and lots of asymptomatic virus carriers left, there would be a massive outbreak in China within a few weeks. Or if there isn't a 2nd wave, it is probably true that the outbreak in China was only limited in Wuhan city and Hubei province. In a country with 1.4 billion people, no one can stop a nationwide outbreak and get everything back to normal just within 2 or 3 months, even a communist dictatorship regime just can't achieve this.1 point

Picture from Global News This was in Toronto yesterday, the Canadian flag upside down by two people that most likely were born and lived here their entire life. I said most likely so I might be wrong, my apology to the Political Correctness crowd on both sides for speculating on someone's origins. If this is the case, it proves to me again the point that loving your country has nothing to do with being born in a country how some ultra nationalists on the right try to tell us (I am aware of the danger of ultra nationalism). I came here as an immigrant and the immigrants that I know will never dare to put the Canadian flag upside down. Why ? Because we have seen other systems and we are thankful that this great country allowed us to come here and be part of this society. Looking to hear other opinions and different points of view on this topic PS: Nobody said it is illegal or it should be illegal, I am a citizen that have an opinion about other citizens actions. At the end they can do whatever they want with their private property. I am not part of anti fa or the alt right to impose my point of view on people. @eyeball Is that you in the back ? The UN, while important, has too many kill switches built into it by the permanent Security Council members, who seldom have unanimous agreement. I think the only way to prevent human rights abuses and massive trade imbalances is to attach conditions on labour standards, the environment, and human rights to trade agreements, which could consist of free trade among a massive block of states that agree to abide by these minimum standards. States that wish to trade with member states of this block either have to comply to enjoy free trade or face a sliding scale of penalties/limitations on trade depending on the level of compliance. Such a block would have nothing to do with the UN, as the UN represents countries with a wide range of standards and opposing ideological viewpoints. Full member states of such a trading block would have to maintain a certain minimum level of democracy and rights/freedoms. Money is a great motivator. Such a block would also enjoy great security, as it could also be a defensive military alliance. Eventually the success of such a block would likely have a transformative impact on the UN and its agencies like the WTO and WHO, because success breeds success. It’s certainly the only realistic way to counter abuses of countries like China and Russia. It also keeps the door open to those countries and other countries with sketchy histories to be better and enjoy better quality of life. Meet the standards and enjoy the full benefits of membership. China would have to improve its wages and standards for labour and the environment, which would reduce the trade imbalance with western countries but also raise living standards and improve stability and democracy for the Chinese. It’s also a further protection from dictatorship everywhere.1 point

Really? When was the last time I started a topic by calling an entire group of people "nuts", "extremists", etc, because of their "conservative" leanings. You've done this multiple times - you start topics with an insult toward whatever group you've got a hate-on for today - progressives, immigrants, Muslims, Blacks. Whomever. I also don't particularly support Trudeau, or the Liberals. I voted for both Harper and Mulroney (Harper only once, he lost my vote with his stance on abortion). I would vote Conservative again, if they started playing to the majority of Canadians, instead of their anti-science, pro-religion and racist base. I voted NDP last time, a protest vote against both Liberals and Conservatives. Admittedly, I was enamored of JT for the first couple of years, but I got over it and returned to my baseline which happens to be - politicians are essentially the same and Canada's direction doesn't change significantly regardless of whether it's Conservatives or Liberals at the helm. I know you hate being called out on your BS - that's why I do it. I really could care less about this legislation, but calling yourself unbiased and 'only dealing with the facts, ma'am' while denigrating and dismissing entire swaths of people as a starting point for your discussion deserves to be questioned and mocked.1 point

I think the US is too divided to reach any consensus on anything. The sheer outrage factor of Trump's presidency has driven even previously moderately normal Democratic policies into the realm of batshit crazy leftist nonsense. I mean, many senior Democrats once openly called for better border security against illegal immigrants. Now they won't even use the term 'illegal immigrant' and call for an end to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, no more arrests for illegal border crossers, amnesty, the extension of social services to illegals, and massively increased immigration. I don't see that as being at all helpful in preventing another similar episode.1 point

no more liberal myths.... The NS shooter obtained his guns without a legal fire arms permit, in other words he purchased one in the USA and smuggled across the border, and the other he got some where in Canada once again an illegal purchase....so please tell me how banning these wpns for legal gun owners is going to prevent these types of people from killing others....or do you think that criminals obey the gun law and the gun restrictions... What they are doing is punishing the law abiding citizens to whom have obeyed the law in every aspect, because someone decided to break the law pick up some illegal wpns and kill some people.... does that make any sense to you...i'm not sure what else I can say....except take 5 mins and read about our nations fire arms policies and restriction....it might put your mind at ease....you also might see how stupid this banning thing really is...1 point
-
I did mention that every fire arms owner is subjected to a daily vetting process, and if mental health pops up, or a police report say domestic violence, your PAL or firearms lic is subject to being revoked, or suspended with your fire arms being confiscated...Just like the NS shooter.... Just a question if there are better solutions then why support this one....why not just call it like it is....this buy back program is not going to be cheap, it is going to cost BILLIONS....these wpns are not cheap....5000.00 to 14,000 when kitted out....and there is 100,000 plus of thee rifles...I;m suggesting we use that funding give it to the border agents and customs, to tackle cross border smuggling of wpns, boast RCMP police groups to tackle the gang and illegal wpns use currently under this same action the liberals have only given up 350 mil to be spread across the country....but at the same time keep repeating this is for our own safety....but the stats clearly show that less than 30 people have been killed by legal owned firearms....over a 30 year period...1 point
-
I'm not dismissing anyone, what I said was they are either to stupid or lazy to do their own research on the topic. At one time the earth was thought to be flat, shit we still have people that think so....does that mean they were right, Hell No right...so that argument is just a strawman.... This whole thing should be looked at with some common sense.... Show me the evidence that has convinced you that this whole thing is a good idea....how much do you think this entire cluster F888 is going to cost, and are there better solutions out there for the amount of money that is going to be spent.... If they can do this with fire arms, and some slick media coverage, what else can they take away....I know nuts right...thats what gun owners thought as well we have one of the worlds tightest control measures in the world in regards to firearms where every fire arm owner is subjected to a daily back ground check by RCMP, harden criminals , rapist, pedophiles, are not subjected to such stringent laws or policies...1 point

Depending where you were in Eastern Europe, was life better after the fall of communism? Or were virtually all state assets and enterprises confiscated by foreign capitalists and local stooges who enriched themselves selling off everything of public benefit. A lot of Russians and other ethnicities died after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and found themselves met by a new capitalist order that cut off their pensions, healthcare, closed their workplaces. This is one of the reasons why, regardless of all of the lamenting and whining that Putin is a dictator, Vlad Putin's popularity in Russia never falls low enough to put him at risk of a coup. Russians who are old enough to remember how it was before, and lived through the collapse and disintegration of the Soviet system, say 'at least he's better than what we had before!'1 point

Even with our sharing the border with the US, our GUN violence by legally owned wpns is less than any country in Europe's.. which means all a ban will do is drive ownership of these wpns under ground like any other ban this county has tried....23 deaths in 30 years thats less than 1 per year...with over 100,000 of these firearms in the country...amazing1 point
-
And thats your right, it would be different if we were forcing you to have guns , but here in Canada it is a chioce...Britian used to be a country where police had to go back to the station and grab a firearm...todays Britian is not the same, now you see them carrying both a hand gun and a Assault rifle...times are changing , not because of legal gun owners , but rather terrorist. here in Canada homicide by a legal wpn is also rare 23 in the last 30 years...you have a better chance of getting stuck by lightning than getting killed by a legal firearm....but some how that scares you why....In this country I don't think one group of people should be telling another group how and what they can do as long as it does no infringe on anyone else rights. Thats exactly what the anti gun lobby is doing....by using false info much like the liberals are doing now they have convinced 65 % of the country that these firearms are nothing more than death...and yet when asked to provide some stats you have to reach back some 30 years, or use examples from the USA, which is a totally different gun culture that will never even come close to here in Canada. Who are you to tell anyone what you will accept ? I've asked you have you been threaten by a legal fire arm, is your family endanger of legal fire arms, No they are not...and yet you 're willing to enforce that opinion on others for no valid reason...certainly not safety, so what is it, because from my side of the fence is you don't fully understand enough about the topic to make a fully informed opinion...in fact i'd say 65 % of Canadians fall into that category... ALL automatic wpns in Canada are prohibited period, unless you have a collectors permit which they stop issuing dozens of years ago...most wpns today are semi auto, and are capable of holding multi rounds , up to 5 in Canada....even most bolt action rifles have magazines holding up to 5 rounds... Give us a number of how many legal firearms are stolen in Canada and then resold as illegal wpns… even the RCMP does not keep those records so if there are no records how can we prove they are the problem...you can't "the proof is the proof" want to cut the supply of illegal fire arms coming in from the states then pump those bils of tax payers dollars into border services and custom...reinforce the police task forces with resources and man power....I'd and many others would support that all day long.... Add stricter penalties that are enforced on illegal firearms...ya right thats another issue the courts....see Mark Chahal massacre where he used a hand gun and shot gun to kill 8 people not enough evidence to convict....he had a police record that read like a book, but could not convict him of anything.. But we are not going in that direction are we....no we are going to waste BILLIONS to purchase wpns that the conservatives are going to make legal once again...And this buy back is not going to do anything for any of your concerns, except piss off the people who are law abiding citizens......1 point
-
There is zero chance British police would not be carrying guns if they had a long, land border with the United States. Even as it stands the UK has been increasing the number of armed police as the number of gun crimes increases. The UK homicide rate is the same as other European countries like Finland and Denmark, which do not ban firearms, and almost the same as others, like France. Canada's homicide rate is largely the product of immigration, and the native reserve system and the poverty on those reserves.1 point

I've noticed many of your other posts (and those of likeminded friends and allies here), so I'm responding to a general theme that's very popular today among the capitalist elite: a dismal view of human nature as savage, and only kept from destruction by the fear of retribution and punitive laws. No, that's how capitalism would work if humans were little automatons that act in predictable ways. Everything would flow according to supply and demand...although you would still have the problem of capital accumulation eventually reaching absurd levels like we have today, even if we didn't have the Wall Street charlatans and billionaire class using bought off politicians to change laws regulating their political and media influence. Those workers getting sick working in places like Cargill are a good example of how the profiteers face no criminal charges for putting workers lives in danger, just to keep their costs as low as possible/and profits as high as possible. They will only face very limited class action lawsuits at civil trials....if it ever actually happens. And, they have already calculated in the costs of any legal jeopardy and determined that sickening and killing a certain portion of their employees doesn't justify increasing spacing on line work stations and even providing employees with proper protective equipment....let alone getting danger pay for doing a shit job for low wages that endangers their lives! This is how wildcat strikes started over 100 years ago in the US and Canada, and worth noting also, how so many of the wealthy new capitalist class were sent to the guillotines along with the traditional oppressive classes of monarchy and landed gentry in France back when they had their big revolution a couple of centuries ago! The last ones who thought it could happen were the ones who got their heads chopped off! At best, those would be franchise owners, not real owners! They're like middle management in the new franchising system where corporations sell their name/while the local franchise operator has to cover all of the operating costs, while they are obligated to abide by standards set by corporate headquarters regarding how their stores or restaurants are set up, what they sell and how much, what they pay their employees, how they decorate the place, store hours etc.. And like the true capitalist the franchisor can sit back and just let the money roll in from all the franchises they own! So, that enterprizing owner you're celebrating is a glorified mid-management hack who's stuck having to cut his staffing to the bone during hard times and get out and do the dangerous and mundane jobs along with his employees. I may very well have given the minimum during my life regarding how I earn a living...certainly that could be said from what's been happening in our brave new era of neoliberalism, where education is career-focused and nothing else, and nobody (except for immigrants) goes to a local library and reads about things they find of interest, but aren't going to put any more money on the table for them! Perhaps I am lucky (as I've said a few times) that I grew up and came of age in the middle of the baby boom, before NAFTA had outsourced industry, and if you wanted to work with your hands, rather than do business deals, you could still make good money if you found a trade that you liked and worked towards a full apprenticeship. Sadly those days are long gone now, in an era where the only people who are respected are the great swindlers who manage money and create new ways to devour wealth...even destroying the wealth of others in the process....something they call "creative destruction" I'm told. Supposedly this makes a better, brighter world for us all!1 point
