"Speaker Anthony Rota apologized on Sunday for giving a standing ovation to Yaroslav Hunka in the House of Commons. The 98-year-old, it was later revealed, fought for a Nazi unit during the Second World War."  The group reportedly murdered thousands of innocent people.  This recognition is particularly grievous to the Jews and Poles, who lost thousands of their people to the Nazis.

Speaker Anthony Rota apologizes for honouring man who fought for Nazis | National Post

Ultimately the PM, the PMO's office, and his security apparatus is responsible for screening everyone who is allowed into Parliament and to be recognized by Parliament.  What happened on Friday is an international embarrassment that will also be used by Russia to try to make the case that Ukrainians are Nazis and Canada support Nazis.  It is a total disaster that the Trudeau government is responsible for and could have been prevented.

There is more important stuff that Trudeau should resign over, this is not one off them.

Oh it does have a Trudeau derangement title too!

That it was the Speaker of the House and not Trudeau OR the Liberal Party that invited the guy doesn't matter. Facts are irrelevant.

Was that P Polliwog clapping too before he knew? Like everyone else?

Well speaker of the house is a liberal, appointed by the PM who is the leader for this shi* show... but we can start with the speaker... but then again if we fired liberal MP for every screw up he would not have a party... Not vetting guests seems to be a real thing for the liberals...i can think of atleast 3 other occasions, when they said oooppss who invited that guy...

It does not matter really Hilter could have made an appearance and everything would have been forgotten by next week...well by liberal voters anyways...

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

Derangement? This was beyond an international embarrassment for Canada. If Poilievre was PM you'd be the first to call for him to resign.

Only the PMO and Speaker had the opportunities to vet that man and both failed. The Speaker is a member of the Liberal Party and was elected under their banner.

"Facts are irrelevant" sure sums up your ideology.

And the Speaker gets to choose independently. as the PM has clearly explained and has issued an apology for doing so, none of which matters if the object is solely to discredit Trudeau any way possible.

Only Trudeau discredits Trudeau, everyone else just says "I told you so".

This mess illustrates the shallowness and stupidity of the current federal government.  They don’t understand their own history and the significance of liberating Europe from Nazism.  They don’t understand that Russia was our ally in this fight.  They don’t understand how Biden and the State Department have maintained this unnecessary war. We will continue to throw billions at Ukraine and watch thousands more Ukrainians die while pretending we didn’t broach Russia’s sphere of influence after winning the Cold War against them.  Ukraine is the main victim of this proxy war, but only a political solution can solve this.  We’re pissing in the wind in Ukraine because Russia won’t back down without applying its range of resources, which includes the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.  Russia has acted badly and so have we.

Just as how no one considers that the guy fought with the Nazis after Stalin committed genocide and starved millions of Ukranians to death, how we were allied to the USSR because 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' regardless of how equally despicable they may be. He may have been seen as a patriot and hero at the time. History's a mess and what one thought was right then is often viewed as wrong today.

That being said, it still remains inviting the guy was an incredible f*ckup and apologies were justifiably due.

And of course, the obligatory thread headline as we know every person who fought on the side of the Axis was a war criminal.

Nonsense.  Every person entering Parliament for this major event should have been cleared by security which is the Trudeau government's responsibility.   Nobody else has this responsibility. They failed to screen this guy.  This was a major security breach which has far-reaching consequences.

Sort of.  The Soviet/Russian Black Sea fleet is in Crimea, which used to be part of Russia.  The Dombass is mostly Russian speaking and the region used to be part of Russia.  The current Ukraine government imprisoned the opposition, has ties to Neonazis, and is heavily influenced by western governments.  Russia had been assured after the collapse of the Soviet Union by the US Secretary of State that NATO wouldn’t move an inch east and precisely the opposite happened.  Russia and Ukraine had a deal hammered out before Boris Johnson was dispatched to Ukraine to tell Zelensky not to make a deal.  So now we have hundreds of thousands dead in a costly, endless proxy war.  You think Ukraine is benefiting from this war?   Do you think we are?  I do know our Parliament is sending billions to Ukraine and cheering an SS war vet.

Dude.  The prime minister is responsible for his ministers and his speaker.  That goes back to before there was a canada in westminster tradition. It is absolutely his responsibility.  And the speaker is an agent of the liberals.  They wear his actions.

At the VERY least - the VERY least - he should have tossed the speaker immediately. Then he could at least say "it was my responsibility and i failed, but i have immedately taken steps to address it and show that this is not tolerable".

But he didn't. He's keeping the guy on.  Now he'll wear it worse.

Russia had an agreement to base its fleet in Crimea which also belonged to Turkey at one point in history. The Russian government has more in common with acting like Nazis than Ukraine. The US is only one member of NATO and to prevent it expanding would have to veto every other members vote. There was never any deal hammered out between Russia and Ukraine. The only agreement reached was Ukraine would not apply to join NATO which Putin ignored and invaded anyway.

A Nazi , who served with the SS no less...then this guy

Trudeau's India visit marred by invite of B.C. man convicted of attempted murder | CBC News ( wondering why Indians don't like us, more to the point Justin...)

and what about the Governor general, who screamed and ranted at the staff all of the time....who vetted that ******...

Josha Boyle ring a bell...guy beat his wife, while held captive in Afghanistan, he got into the PM office...who vetted that guy...Media exposed him for being a stand up guy worthy of the PM time...then someone dug a little deeper...sounds like we should have left him in Afghanistan...

So yes it appears the Liberal government has issues when it comes to vetting people...well to be honest they have a long list of issues, vetting being only one of many....

1) The Black Sea fleet was there with the consent of Ukraine similar to us military presence in places like Greenland and Iceland. That doesn’t entitle annexation any of any territory

2) Many countries have large ethnic populations from neighbouring countries.  That doesn’t justify annexation either

Some mistakes may occasionally be made here and there but inviting the guy who tried to murder the indian gov't TO A DINNER WITH THE INDIAN GOV"T is pretty horrible  - but this is even more baffling.  Someone already told him that the guy served in ww2 - are you seriously telling me it didn't even occur to you to ask "which army"? Like - that feels like your very first step even if you're NOT trying to vet the guy - where'd you serve and with whom? You'd want to confirm that just to make sure he really did serve at the very least.

This is just baffling and it's SO embarrasing for canada on the world stage.

Well I’d agree that the Russian state has attempted to use them, but they have their own agenda.  Yes Russia’s hands are dirty.  No one is especially noble in this conflict.

It looks like everything Trudeau and the Liberals touch turns to garbage.  This somehow seems similar to the ex GG, David Johnson appointed to investigate Chinese election interference.  He was extremely unpopular in that position and finally had to step down.  Now another liberal, the Speaker of the House of Commons is being forced to step down.  All this is because of Trudeau and Liberal mismanagement.  Why didn't the Liberals ensure they had a proper process for screening every individual coming into the House of Commons?  This was one of the most important gatherings in the HOC in many years and it was sabotaged by the mistake of one man.  This has far-reaching consequences with Russian propaganda and Canada's image on the world stage.  Surely the government should be held responsible since they are the only ones that have the power and organization to properly screen individuals.
