So how do you fire a governor general?

Recommended Posts

The question is not how to fire her, but how to take her $150,000 /year pension away.  She is also entitled to some $250,000 in office and travel expenses per year; all taxpayer money!

Now is the time to fix this outrageous system.

Not happening. Not unless they get elected separately. And even then you'd probably need some sort of rule about them not being a member of any political party.

The PM could ‘consider’ the result of a vote for the GG, either by the public or by parliament (in a secret ballot) and appoint the winner who would then serve a term of around seven years. Thus we could have an independent de facto head of state.

Surely, you already know the answer to that!   One has proven to be a reasonable, thoughtful, intelligent and passionate individual in putting fourth his arguments.  The other has proven himself to be a totally arrogant idiot quite content to break every possible rule when it comes to ethics and legality when executing his privilege.

And just what about Justin Trudeau leads you to believe he would want to trade a GG who shares his values and beliefs for one who might not? What about him leads you to believe he wants the GG or anyone else to be independent of him?

I don’t see any prospect for real change after Trudeau either. The de facto head of state should be chosen by the people or their representatives; which major party is interested in supporting reform like that?

Staff complained to the CBC quite some time ago so it’s been in the public domain for months and I’m sure there were rumblings before that. Trudeau must have known and chose to ignore it all.

You paid Nixon for 20 years.

So did everyone of our vets serve their country, in most of the world shit holes, and they still have to fight in our courts to get what every other Canadian already has.  and trust me it ain't no 150,000 a YEAR PENSION for life . And if their service was deemed not fit, all they got was return of contributions and dishonorably discharged, booted to the curb, try and get a job with that on your resume. Sorry i forgot looking after our vets is not a socially accepted here in Canada,  Paying out a public service nightmare with charges of harassment/ humiliation is.

I guess Justin is still refusing to use the conservative method of choosing our next GG, instead he is going to tighten up his already failed method.

and just an added thought here what ever happen to her 2 i/c also accused of bulling...Di Lorenzo

Interesting that prior to the release of the report, Payette was saying no formal complaints had been filed during her tenure, and she welcomed the report to find out what was being said. Various talking heads(on the major canadian TV and Radio channels) are saying that when Trudeau toadie #2 , Dominic LeBlanc visited her with the report,  she asked for the opportunity to answer the charges, and would not consider resignation until that happened. Trudeau himself visited her later in the day, resulting in her resignation. The talking heads speculate (and I agree with them)  that Trudeau used a carrot and stick approach to obtain the resignation ( carrot being the pension, stick being threat of Trudeau instructing QE2 to kick her out.).

In any decent western society there is something called 'due process' under which accusations against someone result in that person being able to provide answers to the accusations in front of an impartial judge, and usually face their accusers too. What we have here is a political show trial where the accused is forced to admit their crimes ( by the resignation and silence).

Seems that now Canada has evolved into one of those countries where committees issue statements and the target quietly disappears. Sad, so sad.  What gets my goat the most is the utter pompousness of some of the talking heads, saying that her answering the secret report , 'would harm the dignity of the office',  when you, I , and every Canadian knows , there will be no answering of the report because it might make Justin look bad.  Pathetic, Pathetic Pathetic.

The 'method' was much more that just a 'method' it was a non-partisan committee that "conducted extensive consultations with more than 200 people across the country,] including academics, provincial premiers, current and former political party leaders, former prime ministers, and others, in order to develop a short list of five candidates,] from which the prime minister would make the final selection."

A decent fair and respectful process that allowed a full airing of views, and asking of questions about any prospective appointee.

The committee,  to which people were appointed in 2012 for 6 year terms, was immediately abolished by Trudeau when he took office in 2015. Why do you need a non-partisan committee when you have all-seeing, all-knowing, dear leader Justin Trudeau ,who,  like his father, great leader Pierre Trudeau, is incapable of incorrect thought?

Remember that Trudeau made her GG despite being charged with assault of her ex husband by Maryland police (the charges were later dropped). She was appointed largely because once again Trudeau insisted on a woman, and it had to be a francophone who was bilingual. That limited the choice, obviously.

She joins Michaelle Jean, Adrian Clarkson and Jeanne Sauve as female GGs who were miserable failures, probably because they weren't appointed for any reason but identity politics. Romeo Leblanc was dull as dishwater. The two good ones we've had of late were the Tory appointees, Daniel Johnson and Ray Hnatyshyn.

"This has gone from being one of the most collegial and enjoyable work environments for many of the staff to being a house of horrors," said one government source. "It's bullying and harassment at its worst."

CBC News spoke to a dozen sources with direct knowledge of the office during Payette's mandate. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they feared they could lose their jobs or their careers could suffer. Many of the sources are still in the public service, while others are former Rideau Hall employees.

The sources say Payette has yelled at, belittled and publicly humiliated employees. They accuse her of throwing tantrums in the office and, on one occasion, tossing an employee's work aside and calling it "shit."

On a single day, multiple people were seen leaving Payette's office with tears in their eyes after private meetings with the Governor General, said one source. In another instance, a staff member was spotted crying in their car.

This is what we all end up getting and deserve because of those buffoons who keep voting in scum bag political party's like the leftist liberal party who could care less about people or country. Most of these GG's were french leftist liberals and NDP socialists whom appeared to all despised Canada and it's citizen's. We have the governments that we get because the people appear to not give a crap at all as to what is going on in Canada. And it is thanks to those fools that I have to live and suffer with under their communist agendas and regime.

And do not expect anything to change anytime soon. The buffoons out there will still vote for the likes of comrade Trudeau and his ilk. The Dominion voting machines will give comrade Trudeau another four more years. That is probably how this misfit got in as dictator for Canada in the last election. The majority of Canadians have never been known for their intelligence. Their stupidity for sure is well known though. Look at them all in a panic and wanting to get vaccinated. Stupid people do stupid things while others get rich off off of their stupidity. Bill Gates and big pharma stands to make hundreds of millions of dollars off of those stupid, I want to be vaccinated, fools. Aw well. ;)

You trust all those people you mentioned above to not be or show bias and being partial in anything they say or do? Pretty much all of them cannot be put in the category of being anywhere near being smart and intelligent people. My opinion of them all is that they pretty much are all liars, cheats, bullshitters and thieves. Just my opinion of course. :D

I can guess how 'non-partisan' the committee was, and I'm also pretty sure that candidates were limited in terms of gender and race from the outset.

Even if it wasn't, when it came down to the end, if the 5 were Wayne Gretzky, Larry Walker, Chris Hadfield, Jarome Iginla and Karla Homolka, he'd pick Karla Homolka.

It’s time to abolish the costly, meaningless governor general job

Governor General Julie Payette inspects the Guard of Honour during a ceremony at Rideau Hall after being installed as Canada's 29th Governor General, in Ottawa on Oct. 2, 2017.

In the 40 months that Julie Payette was Canada’s governor general she read two throne speeches, officiated once over the dissolution of Parliament, swore in some 30 cabinet ministers and wrote her signature on several dozen pieces of legislation.

That basically was the sum total of her primary duties.

She also spent a bit of time meeting children, cutting ribbons and handing out public service awards. By all accounts, Payette hated doing many of these tasks — to the point she even stopped doing some of them.

Total cost of operating her office over those 40 months?

A staggering $120 million!

Think about it: Canada spends more than $35 million a year for a position that’s a largely ceremonial relic of British colonialism.

Indeed, it seems like the perfect job — the workload is light, the pay is $288,900 a year, the benefits are spectacular, including an inflation-adjusted pension of $149,484 a year for life for a job that lasts just five years, a large staff ($19 million a year), servants, chauffeur-driven vehicles and two official residences, Rideau Hall in Ottawa and La Citadelle in Quebec City ($9 million annually).

You can add in travel and offices expenses of up to $206,000 a year afteryou’ve left the job plus several million dollars for you to set up a charity.

And when the job gets a bit tough, there’s a slew of legal and constitutional experts on hand to tell you what to say and do.

Surely all that money could be better spent, such as on health care or turning the governor general’s “homes” into centres for higher education, technology or Indigenous art.

In truth, it’s a silly, irrelevant job filled with pomp and ceremony but nothing of real substance.

What to do about the governor general’s office is being asked in the days following Payette’s sudden resignation last week amid charges she was abusive with her staff.

Sadly, much of the discussion has centred on how to “reform” and “modernize” the office, how to “democratize” the selection process and who would be best to replace Payette as the Queen’s representative in Canada.

Instead, the real question that should be asked is why Canada even needs a governor general.

The so-called “experts” say the job is too important to ditch it, dismissively suggesting that those of us who favour abolishing the post don’t understand “tradition” and “constitutional law” and that, gee whiz, without a governor general in charge the whole country could come tumbling down and chaos would ensue.

Hogwash!

The last time a so-called “crisis” occurred was almost 100 years ago, back in 1926 when in the King-Byng affair then governor general Lord Byng of Vimy declined a request by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King to dissolve Parliament and call an election.

In the absence of a governor general, the few official duties required of the post could be easily filled by others.

For example, the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada could swear in cabinet ministers, dissolve Parliament when asked by the prime minister and sign legislation into effect. In fact, that’s what the current Chief Justice of Canada Richard Wagner has been tasked to do following Payette’s resignation. Also, the Speaker of the House could read the throne speech. MPs and senators could cut ribbons and hand out honorary pins.

Payette’s resignation should also force every Canadian to ask themselves the embarrassing — dare I say, humiliating — question of why we continue to have a foreign monarch as our head of state.

I’d bet most Canadians don’t have a clue what the governor general does or that she represents Queen Elizabeth, Canada’s head of state. I’d wager even more that most people believe Justin Trudeau is our head of state, when it’s actually a sweet 94-year-old great-grandmother living in England.

Payette’s resignation offers all of us the chance to give serious thought to leaving our colonial past behind.

Really, what does it say about our national pride if we merely “reform” this expensive relic of Canada’s ties to Britain — rather than abolishing it as we should.

regarding her pension:  Army Guy is right, she served her country and should be entitled to EXACTLY the same benefits as someone who had served in a senior rank for whatever number of years she was GG - tacked onto the end of her pension plan from years at CSA.

Anything else should be wiped out along with the ridiculous office of GG.  If we want to preserve the function, those duties can be tacked onto some other actual and useful government position as an honourarium.  That way some deserving janitor on the Hill could enhance his or her pension.
