The fatality rate for flu in the US for 2019/2020 so far is estimated here at approximately 0.06% Statistics are easily misleading. Some might say they’re the devil himself. Let’s consider it in light of hospitalizations, not reported infections where there is no hospitalization. Because there are many different strains... and some are not virulent. Make sense?

The problem here is nobody knows what's going to happen. Ebola and Bird flu never made it to the west, and SARS was short-lived. If this makes it out into the general population it's going to be here for a long time and that's going to have a big impact on people's spending habits. No more sports stadiums, movie theaters, concerts, theme parks, no more going near crowds, period. No one will want to get near a crowded bus or train. No one is going to be taking cruises or even flying around much. Tourism plummeting, etc. etc. Not to mention all the disruption created by workers staying home. Possibly. But even H1N1 was technically a pandemic and not much happened after the first couple of months. Regardless, the media has failed to put things in proper perspective. In the United States, 15,000 to 50,000 people die each year from just the regular flu.
bush_cheney2004 Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Infection rates and mortality in other nations are not directly applicable to Canada, where more people are concentrated in fewer urban cities. Many of Canada's urban hospitals are already operating at close to max capacity. Economics trumps Virtue.

Dougie93 Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Quote Why Some COVID-19 Cases Are Worse than Others Emerging data as well as knowledge from the SARS and MERS coronavirus outbreaks yield some clues as to why SARS-CoV-2 affects some people worse than others. Elderly and sick people are most susceptible to severe forms of COVID-19 The latest data from China stem from an analysis of nearly 45,000 confirmed cases, and on the whole suggest that the people most likely to develop severe forms of COVID-19 are those with pre-existing illnesses and the elderly. While less than 1 percent of people who were otherwise healthy died from the disease, the fatality rate for people with cardiovascular disease was 10.5 percent. That figure was 7.3 percent for diabetes patients and around 6 percent for those with chronic respiratory disease, hypertension, or cancer. While overall, 2.3 percent of known cases proved fatal—which many experts say is likely an overestimate of the mortality rate, given that many mild cases might go undiagnosed—patients 80 years or older were most at risk, with 14.8 percent of them dying. Deaths occurred in every age group except in children under the age of nine, and, generally speaking, “we see relatively few cases among children,” World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said last week. This pattern of increasing severity with age differs from that of some other viral outbreaks, notably the 1918 flu pandemic, for which mortality was high in young children and in people between 20 and 40 years of age. However, it’s broadly consistent with records of the SARS and MERS coronavirus outbreaks, notes Lisa Gralinski, a virologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “If you’re over fifty or sixty and you have some other health issues and if you’re unlucky enough to be exposed to this virus, it could be very bad,” she says. https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/why-some-covid-19-cases-are-worse-than-others-67160

Evidence: Quote CBC News analyzed data for all 169 acute care hospital sites in the province during this six-month time frame. Some of the key findings: 83 hospitals were beyond 100 per cent capacity for more than 30 days. 39 hospitals hit 120 per cent capacity or higher for at least one day. 40 hospitals averaged 100 per cent capacity or higher. An expert on hospital administration calls the figures "astonishing" and says they demonstrate that overcrowding is now a widespread phenomenon around Ontario. Many people go to hospital for things easily treated with over the counter drugs or a visit to the family doctor or walk-in clinic. We have a half-empty hospital and multiple walk-in clinics nearby. In fact, the walk-in clinic at the nearby supermarket seldom has more than one or two people in it, at least when I go.

In fact, the walk-in clinic at the nearby supermarket seldom has more than one or two people in it, at least when I go. The reasons for maxed out hospitals in Ontario is another matter, but the data suggests that they are. Quote Root causes The number of acute care hospital beds in Ontario has stayed effectively the same for 20 years, at around 20,000 while the province's population has grown by three million people. Ontario now has fewer acute care hospital beds per capita than any other province: 1.4 beds for every 1,000 people. That's on par with Mexico, and half the number in the U.S. If hospitalization is required for thousands of COVID-19 patients, this will put more strain on the system. Dougie93 Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 (edited) There's not actually much they can do for you at the hospital Estimates are that this SARS-CoV-2 is less than 90 days old, they don't have a vaccine, they don't have a cure. The thing that kills you is runaway inflammation of the lungs, you drown in your own fluids, even a ventilator can't stop it. The treatment for people infected so far is apparently just giving them Gatorade. Edited February 29, 2020 by Dougie93

We’re way past bickering about gun control anyway. Start worrying about whether decent employment and the opportunities we’ve had in the past will even be permitted. Guest ProudConservative Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 (edited) This movie predicted what would happen if some mad environmentalist decided to take matters into his own hands. Hopefully the coronavirus isn't a bioweapon. It only take one rouge scientist, who thinks there no alternative. With climate hystaria, someone might of decided to try and kill a billion people. Asymptomatic transmision for up to 24 day's is almost unheard of, especially for a deadly disease. How do we know that the people who've recovered don't still have the virus, and won't end up dying if they flare up again? It could be similar to shingles... since it comes from a dorment virus. This could be a bioweapon designed to lay dorment in the body, wrecking havic on the immunse system. The first infection could be moderate, but the bioweapon could be designed to become more deadly when your body flares up again. China is the world's most overpopulated country, so if someone wanted to cull the planet, it would make sense to release the virus in the middle of China.
