GostHacked Posted December 28, 2014 Report Posted December 28, 2014 (edited) Star Wars trailer is out. I hate the vapid big-screen comic book genre and what it has become. The 4th film in the series was what turned me against the genre. Maybe the 7th will bring it back for me. There's always a "new hope", right ? Only problem whit that trailer is, it is a fake trailer .... the shot where Harrison Ford speaks is from Ender's Game... Someone with clever editing skills created this somehow. overthere Posted December 29, 2014 Report Posted December 29, 2014 (edited) The Imitation Game: very good Blue Ruin: a small indie movie about revenge gone wrong.... also very good. It is on US Netflix if you have access. eta: The Hobbit Part Whatever: it was pretty good but only if you are into the Tolkien story told in massive detail. The three parts of the Hobbit movies run something close to 9 hours to relate the story of a 200 page book. Thanks for doing this Peter Jackson and thank you for mercifully finishing. BC_chick Posted December 30, 2014 Report Posted December 30, 2014 12 Years a Slave. I know I was quite late on this one but I finally understand all the hype last year. It was slow at first but captivating nevertheless. The near end had one of the best dramatic scenes I have ever seen in my life. It haunted for for weeks. Lupita Nyong'o well deserved the Oscar for that role, what an amazing performance. Michael Fassbender was also fantastic. Everything was fantastic, really, the storyline, the costumes, the sounds, the directing. Best Picture, indeed. GostHacked Posted December 30, 2014 Report Posted December 30, 2014 Edge of Tomorrow - I think Cruise is a nutter overall but he is still a damn good actor and attaches himself to really good projects. This movie surprised me with the concept and the humour really helped the movie along. Visually stunning with a really good story. It's a sci-fi groundhog day type movie. Automata - This movie's cinematography is stunning. A great story with a twist on AIs. Transcendence - Another actor I can't hate Johnny Depp. A really different role from many of his previous movies and he pulled it off really well. Another well shot movie with really good pacing. The Signal - This movie went under my radar, and again, a well shot movie. Lawrence Fishburn does a great job in this film and the outcome is a little predictable but very enjoyable overall. I am a sucker for good sci-fi movies. And these fit the bill. Quote
kimmy Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 I also recently saw Edge of Tomorrow, and I thought it was amazingly great. The premise (and I don't think this is a spoiler... it was made clear in the advertising) is that a soldier named Cage (Tom Cruise) is relives the same day over and over. Each time he dies, it starts all over in exactly the same way. And he does die. A lot. "Live. Die. Repeat." as the movie's tag-line says. He's like a video game character with infinite respawns. And like a video game player, he gets to keep the knowledge from his previous life to help him do better in his next one. Sometimes he does. Sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes it's hilarious. Like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, Cage is a slime-ball when we first meet him. And like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, Cage evolves as a person as with each play-through. Unlike Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, Cage is embedded with a futuristic mechanized battlesuit infantry as the go to war against deadly tentacle-wielding aliens. It's a bit like Warhammer vs the Minions of Cthulhu. What really set the movie above the typical action adventure is the relationship between Cage and Rita (Emily Blunt). Rita is a highly decorated war-hero and she's the only person Cage can trust. Their relationship is very asymmetrical. He spends hundreds of days with her... she is his only ally, his mentor, his confidant... and he watches her die dozens of times. But each time she meets him, it's the first time. Over their many many days together, Cage comes to deeply care for Rita, yet she has no idea who he is. Cruise and Blunt are great in this. Loved it. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
sharkman Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 Yep, it was one of the best action movies of the year. Some people get hung up on Tom Cruise but he's a nut bar in a crazy industry. Quote
kimmy Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 I also recently saw The Hobbit, part 3. It was pretty crappy for the most part. I say that as somebody who really enjoyed the LOTR trilogy and had a lot of arguments with other Tolkien enthusiasts who were mad at parts that deviated from the books. My objection to The Hobbit movies isn't that they deviated from the book. My objection is that they weren't very good movies. A lot of dialogue that Peter Jackson and Fran and Philippa added was, quite bluntly, dog crap. The battle scenes were tedious, overly long, and pointless. Just a lot of chaos and noise for the most part. "Action" isn't necessarily exciting. The battle scenes in this movie prove that point. About the closest analogy I can think of is The Transformers movie, where you can't tell which robots are which or what's going on and it all just just a bunch of inane herp-derp. In The Hobbit you can at least tell the dwarves and elves apart from the orcs and goblins, but it's still a bunch of inane herp-derp. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
Michael Hardner Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 More Films over the holidays: Top Five - Chris Rock makes a film that's hard to categorize: kind of hip, black comedy, kind of drama, kind of rom-com. It's ok, but not even award-worthy. Maybe the next one will be better. Straight Time - 1970s Dustin Hoffman flick with him as a paroled convict going bad. Some big stars in this one, including Kathy Bates, Harry Dean Stanton, M. Emmett Walsh. Some great robbery scenes, and you wonder if Quentin Tarrantino watched this one over and over. New Years Evil - 1980s horror slasher flick that fails to delivery any suspense whatsoever. Terrible. Child of God - brutal but well-made adaptation of a Cormack McCarthy story of a feral woodsman who goes... very very very bad. It seems to have been overlooked, but it's amazing especially the acting and direction. Brutal, though. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
overthere Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 Foxcatcher: very dark, somber adaptation of a true story about a rich man who wants to coach a world class wrestling team, and recruits brothers who have both won Olympic gold medals to build around. the entire cast is very good, but there is very little in the way of cheeriness. It will get some Oscar nominations. I rewatched Headhunters(on US Netflix), a subtitled Norwegian thriller written by Jo Nesbo. It is a terrific thriller with many twists. Fun stuff. WestCoastRunner Posted January 4, 2015 Report Posted January 4, 2015 I just got caught up on House of Cards in anticipation of season 3 and the hype around this series. I found the storylines somewhat farfetched, however having said that, the performances are amazing especially from Robin and Kevin. I was so disappointed to see the demise of (spoiler alert***) Doug Stamper. He was such an intriguing character, full of complexities. I am looking forward to the season 3. Moonlight Graham Posted January 4, 2015 Author Report Posted January 4, 2015 Top Five - Chris Rock makes a film that's hard to categorize: kind of hip, black comedy, kind of drama, kind of rom-com. It's ok, but not even award-worthy. Maybe the next one will be better. Saw Top Five too. You're right, not a pure comedy, not a pure drama, etc. It's a different movie, much different than the trailers make it out to be (they sell it as a comedy). It's dragged out and a bit boring, but also smart and self-referencing, it knows that it's not a typical comedy starring a big-time comedian, but that doesn't save it. It's not a horrible movie but I wouldn't recommend it. Quote "All generalizations are false, including this one." - Mark Twain Partisanship is a disease of the intellect.
Michael Hardner Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Saw "Killer Joe" ... based on a play, so lots of actors want to do it. It felt like a play, but also quite rough in subject matter... violence, sex, degradation. If you like Tarrantino then this film is for you. Except it's set in Texas. I think this was the first movie I recall where Mathew McConaughey played a role that was not mostly about a prettyboy with his shirt off. It's dark and good. He has gone on to play some really great parts in the last few years. Saw Inherent Vice on the weekend. I would have to call it a major disappointment. I think it was a comedy. 21/2 hours of WTF? I think it was a comedy. 21/2 hours of WTF? 1. I liked him before his latest resurgence. Dazed & Confused and Reign of Fire were two ends of an acting spectrum and he did those parts well. Weirdo Texas guy is what I have seen him play the last few times... not really my cup of tea. Also, he wasn't mysterious enough as Killer Joe. Think of the villains in No Country for Old Men, or Robert Blake in Lost Highway. A mysterious villain should be more of an outline... less of a mortal. I guess this guy was written to like ... uh ... earthly pleasures but still... 2. I'm sorry to hear that. I'll still see it though. PT Anderson was recently interviewed on the WTF podcast. Seems like an everyman which is neither here nor there. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
Derek 2.0 Posted January 18, 2015 Report Posted January 18, 2015 Just watched American Sniper.......For those that don't know Chris Kyle's story and want to see the movie, my advice go in blind (as my wife did)......I'll leave my review as simply WoW.......Eastwood has another Million Dollar Baby or Unforgiven on his hands, but based on an actual true story (as told by Kyle in his book)........... Also, I have a new respect for Bradley Cooper as an Actor, I always thought him entertaining, but never an actual talented actor..I think his performance warrants an Oscar........ Worth seeing in the theater, and I'm certain will be the blockbuster of 2015........ Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted January 18, 2015 Report Posted January 18, 2015 Just watched American Sniper..... The book already got a lot of attention because of Jesse Ventura's successful defamation lawsuit against the late Kyle's estate. Now he is going after the publisher. Did Eastwood include the alleged bar fight scene ? Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Derek 2.0 Posted January 18, 2015 Report Posted January 18, 2015 Not at all, I would assume that aside from the possibility of the case being appealed, I’m certain Eastwood recognizes that if he did mention Ventura, once Eastwood eventually dies, Ventura would fleece his estate and rob the inheritance from Clint’s children. Ironic that Ventura makes a living off of presenting an alternative to what is commonly thought as fact, likewise the miscommunication on his part as to being a former SEAL……unlike Chris Kyle, who actually was. overthere Posted January 18, 2015 Report Posted January 18, 2015 Watched Gone Girl last night. I'd give it 6.5 out of 10. It has some interesting twists and plot turns, but the ending was incoherent to somebody who has not read the book. Like me. I tried to read the book, but gave up 40 pages in because it was boring. Black Dog Posted January 19, 2015 Report Posted January 19, 2015 In American Sniper, did they include the time he killed like 30 looters in New Orleans during Katrina, or the part where he killed two guys trying to steal his truck? Quote

Why would they include “tales” associated with Kyle that “surfaced” and were attributed to Kyle, by others, after his death? AFAIK the carjacking rumor came about on “call in radio” after Kyle was killed, likewise Katrina rumours which came to surface from the lunatic fringe conspiracy crowd….Funny enough though, Kyle was in Iraq during Hurricane Katrina………. “Bullshit” Chris Kyle stories are just that……. *But I heard Kyle could shoot lasers from his eyes and fart bolts of lightning........its now on the internet, so it must be true.
