Guest Manny Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 The rotation of the milky way galaxy takes about 250 million years. However, I think it's "inelegant" to overlook the phenominal accuracy of a calendar that started about 7000 years ago, and ends exactly on the winter solstice. These people for whatever reason had something figured out about the orbits and cycles of the tiny points of light in the sky. Must have been the mushrooms. Quote

guyser Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 I am anxious about it. I hope it doesn't end but if it does, I will try to remain happy in the fact that I have tried my best even though my disability has hampered me much of my life. Which one? Quote

These people for whatever reason had something figured out about the orbits and cycles of the tiny points of light in the sky. Must have been the mushrooms. Think of it this way. In these old civilizations, there was absolutely nothing to do at night. No electricity, no lights (other than torches or candles etc.), no TV, radio, few if any books (pre-printing press) etc. One of the few things you could do at night was go to bed or gaze at the stars. So i'm assuming people spent countless hours staring at the stars (and moon), then eventually observing patterns, using them for navigation and record keeping etc. Quote "All generalizations are false, including this one." - Mark Twain Partisanship is a disease of the intellect.
sharkman Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) They must have had idle hands then. No wonder they started human sacrifice. Now I guess we just do it as an occasionally inconvenient by-product of sex. Anyway, I do appreciate the wonder of these ancient civilizations that could do so much with so little. GostHacked Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 So I was wrong about 25000 years around the galaxy. Bonam is correct. http://www.hiddenhistoryhumanity.com/8C%20Shamballa%20Mayans%20Brazil%206th%20RR%20III.htm The Greater Aquarian CycleIf the 26,000 Great Year Cycle of the Mayans is ending in 2012 (coinciding with the lesser 5,125 year cycle), it is highly significant because it may also relate to ‘the greater wheel’ and its cycle of 26,000 years – finishing one cycle and starting another. The twelve zodiac signs take 26,000 years to precess the full circle of 360 degrees, the same time span as it takes for one zodiac sign in the greater zodiac. Quote
WWWTT Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 How in the world did these ancient primitive people figure out the rotation of the solar system? They did human sacrifice! It doesn't add up, one of history's oddities. Good question! The Mayans had very advanced mathematics and used the concept of zero. That way they were able to do the calculations. Furthermore they already knew that a solar calendar was inacurate so would use the more acurate lunar. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! WWWTT Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 It's simply a new era in the Mayan calendar. The calendar seems to document a single rotation of our solar system around the galaxy. The last cycle started about 25,000 years ago. And the new one begins soon. We move from the age of Pisces, to Aquarius. And I will spare posting the song :! I believe I heard something like this to. The_Squid Posted December 19, 2012 Report Posted December 19, 2012 So the Mayan calendar says the world will be ending this Friday at 6:11am eastern. No it doesn't. Quote

Guest Manny Posted December 19, 2012 Report Posted December 19, 2012 (edited) What time on Dec 21 is it supposed to end? Like right at 12:00:01, or what Edited to add: actual time of solstice according to astronomers is 6:21 am EST. So, may as well stay up extra late on Thursday night Edited December 19, 2012 by Manny Quote
Bonam Posted December 19, 2012 Report Posted December 19, 2012 What amazes me is the number of people who give credence to these random "end of the world" doomsayers. People predict it every few years. I guess it's like Einstein said: "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Quote

sharkman Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 Of course you don't, I'll tell you when the end of the world is coming. We'll be a lot closer to it if several nations attack Israel and she resorts to nukes. Quote

Michael Hardner Posted December 23, 2012 Report Posted December 23, 2012 Well some would not have minded. Didn't R.E.M. as parroted by Great Big Sea say, "it's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine?" Yes, REM was talking about standing on one of the peaks in history - the beginning of true detente between the west and the Communist nations, the beginning of the environmental movement, a new era in gender relations - and deciding that one is ready for the change. REM toured in 1989 (their GREEN tour) and had Greenpeace set up information kiosks inside their concerts. I remembered thinking that it was a return to the political music of the 1960s but with more of a mature sensibility, and a focus on a particular issue. Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
