jbg Posted December 23, 2012 Report Posted December 23, 2012 Yes, REM was talking about standing on one of the peaks in history - the beginning of true detente between the west and the Communist nations, the beginning of the environmental movement, a new era in gender relations - and deciding that one is ready for the change. REM toured in 1989 (their GREEN tour) and had Greenpeace set up information kiosks inside their concerts. I remembered thinking that it was a return to the political music of the 1960s but with more of a mature sensibility, and a focus on a particular issue. Thanks for the insight. I was unaware of the history and of their "(s)tand" (pun fully intended) on the issues. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Always remember that when you are in the right you can afford to keep your temper, and when you are in the wrong you cannot afford to lose it. - J.J. Reynolds. Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
BC_chick Posted December 30, 2012 Report Posted December 30, 2012 (edited) Has anyone seen or read anything about the surivivalists and their reaction to the world not ending? I googled using several criteria but I'm not finding much. I'm curious to know because this time it wasn't just a religious angle, wealthy non-religious people had also bought into the Mayan/planetary realignment idea and some were buying bunkers for large sums of money. I would think that the lack of religious component would make it more newsworthy but maybe that's the reason I haven't found much. I did come across a forum started in 2008 where survivalists traded information (some of which are very funny in hindsight), but not shockingly, the forum is very quiet. bush_cheney2004 Posted December 30, 2012 Report Posted December 30, 2012 Nope.....lots more attention and a helluva lot more money was spent by non-religious folk for Y2K. Google that..... Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
