Everyone is going apeshit over this EO: https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/08/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-protects-the-american-flag-from-desecration/ The main argument is that flag burning is free speech. That is true. Like every other right, there are limits. You can't wrap a person in a flag, douse them in gas and light in on fire and still call it free speech. That is the point of the EO. The EO does not change the law, the constitution or anything else. What it does do, is direct AGs to enforce the laws, even if the flag is involved. Using the flag does not create an immunity from prosecution for other crimes. So if they burn it during a burn ban, an illegal protest or any other illegal activity, they will be prosecuted for that crime. The act of burning the flag is not the catalyst for prosecution, it just isn't the immunity.4 points

I don't actually buy that Trudeau was all that charismatic, anyway. I think a great deal of Trudeau's star appeal was manufactured by the media. And Carney has all the personality of a wet-blanket. Pierre is a really good speaker. He smiles a lot and is very warm. He is also bright and quick on his feet. The reason Pierre is disliked by so many is that they are told he is all these awful things. Angry, divisive, Trumpy.. and once again this is manufactured by Canadian media.2 points

Customs, traditions, laws, lifestyles and low level ethnic grudges too. It's human nature, it's also why demographic concentrations need to be monitored and warehousing new immigrants / refugees vertically is always problematic. People here (mostly) don't understand the cultures because they've never been to those countries. The people who have will usually recommend caution, careful vetting and extra support (which costs money)... they are invariably shouted down by Herb like crazies screaming racist. The Herbs of the world never consider such things as the plight of a single mother who has less status in her home country than her teenage sons do. They won't even acknowledge that as a group, they have no trust in government, the military, or the police (with good reason BTW) and lack the language skills to get by in areas other than the sort of (vertical) ethnic conclaves I refer to... which then serve as breading grounds for such things as gangs and the radicalization of young people. If you are going to import people who are fundamentally opposed to secular democracy and the societal norms you hold dear then you need to stop listing to Herb, be more thoughtful, more cautious, more culturally aware and more supportive than we have been. The same people who talk about "tipping points" in global warming have no concept of what that means in terms of demographic concentrations... until they do, and then it's too late. That's why I blame them for bad outcomes and the effect of draconian backlashes against innocent people... ya hear me Herb?2 points

The purpose of this thread is to initiate discussions around how we would assess frameworks for mitigating climate change. There are other threads that discuss whether climate change is happening, causes, etc. That is not this thread. Nor is the intention to make the economic case itself. Instead, I would like a discussion on how we would collectively assess an approach: what are the thresholds for return on investment, what are the trade-offs, what is the timing for change. Here's a starting point, an assessment by the the Boston Consulting Group: https://www.bcg.com/press/12march2025-economic-case-climate-investment There is a strong case for investing in climate mitigation and adaptation based on the severe economic consequences of failure alone. Allowing global warming to reach 3°C by 2100 could reduce cumulative economic output by 15% to 34%. Alternatively, investing 1% to 2% in mitigation and adaptation would limit warming to 2°C, reducing economic damages to 2% to 4%. This net cost of inaction is equivalent to 11% to 27% of cumulative GDP—equivalent to three times global health care spending, or eight times the amount needed to lift the world above the global poverty line by 2100. These are among the findings of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Cambridge Judge Business School, and the University of Cambridge’s climaTraces Lab report1 point

Let's start with this: Trump to allow 600,000 Chinese students entry to US for college as trade talks with China press on I am not a fan of letting Chinese students back given the Chinese are using these students to spy on our industry and steal our tech and other innovations. I am not even sure a good background check could prevent that. Then there is this, and probably the worst idea: Trump Says Intel Will Give 10% Stake To U.S., Becoming Third-Largest Shareholder The idea is that the government will get dividends from Intel for granting Intel money. I am diametrically opposed to this, both the grant and the dividends. If, what they are doing is lucrative there must be an investor that would take the risk. The government cannot and should not be picking winners and losers in the market. Further, this opens the door for socialism that is literally the government owning all businesses. This is a huge mistake.1 point

Ottawa to hire more consultants because 34,000 staff ‘unavailable’ Last year, it admitted it tripled consultant spending to $311.8 million — 6% of its total budget — because staff were “not available” or lacked the right skills. “Does hiring consultants amount to using replacement workers instead of public servants?” one internal briefing note asked. Officials claimed consultants allow for “flexible and rapid deployment of resources.” The reliance on outside help has exploded across government. What the actual hell. The size of the civil service has shot up faster than a rocket, yet somehow the staff is unavailable and unqualified. It's one thing to hire less staff and have to rely on consultants, or to hire more staff but cut the consultant budget. But when you do BOTH, something is wrong.1 point

There's truth in that. Usually it's the conservative gov't that's got to go through the pain fixing the mistakes of the liberals and then people hate them and want the liberals back. This time it may be carney who wears all the negatives and cuts and the cpc that winds up enjoying the benefits.1 point

No, no rebuttal because as I said a short time ago, I'm done you. You have zero ability to listen and understand what's said if it doesn't fall within your small feeble mind capacity. You blatantly don't listen and choose to make sh*t up as you go along to listen to yourself talk. A sad and pathetic little man.... You're a childish no it all partisan hack of a little sh*t who has f*ck all going for himself except to jump into every conversation on this forum and play right left politics and ideologies. I have no interest or time for little f*cks like you so as polite as I can be.... go f*ck yourself you little sh*t.1 point

Listen to yourself, Link. Any statement made by a leftist politician or one of their MSM outlets instantly becomes your hill to die on, forever, regardless of whatever contradictory evidence you're exposed to. Eg, inside your mind the vaxes are still "safe and effective: if you get them you don't have to worry about covid and you don't have to worry about giving covid to granny", and if your own brother died of covid right in front of you, after taking the jab, you'd blame the unvaxed and still consider the jabs to be perfect. OK, Linkie-poo, you glorious little font of nullage and wisdumb.1 point

LOL so no rebuttal, can't address the points, no argument made, answered a question you specifically asked....and you think I'M the one with no skills? LOLOLOL Kid you just ran away with your tail between your legs because you can't face the simple truth or facts. That would be the problem here. Carney has zero experience being a politician, never mind being the TOP politician. And we can see that. He's being called a bootlicker by Other liberals never mind anyone else, he's facing rising criticism for his mishandling of everything from first nations to air canada, the guy just does not understand the game. So the people who are REALLY running the show are the people advising him. And those people are exactly the same people who advised trudeau. You can stick your head in the sand and cry al you like but at the end of the day the truth remains the same.1 point

t has been assumed that the COVID-19 vaccination reduces the risk of transmission to others. Results during the delta predominance show that the viral load in the vaccinated population is not consistently lower compared to the unvaccinated, and during the omicron predominance, the viral load was even somewhat higher. Levels of infectious SARS-CoV-2 were partly lower in the vaccinated population. Viral loads were mostly lower in re-infections compared to breakthrough infections. Viral clearance including the detection of infectious virus has mostly been described to be faster in the vaccinated population suggesting a shorter duration as a possible source for transmission. The epidemiological relevance of this finding remains uncertain. Approximately half of the transmission studies found lower secondary attack rates from the fully vaccinated population, but the results are probably best explained by the vaccination status of the contact population. Public health data from the UK show that the number of COVID-19 cases is higher among the fully vaccinated and boosted population who might be possible sources, in contrast to lower case numbers within the first three months among the vaccinated obtained in phase 3 trials on symptomatic cases. Overall, there is no convincing evidence that the COVID-19 vaccination significantly reduces the risk to transmit SARS-CoV-2 to others. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39283431/1 point

The job is to be top politician. PP has decades of experience directly in politics, helping prepare budgets and work on critical files, participate in caucus and negotiations, understand and experience trade issues etc. Carney has zero. None. Has never handled a trade negotiation in his life. As we can clearly see. Doesn't get the politics behind the first nations and severely insulted them. Doesn't understand the complexity of interprovincial trade. Doesn't understand how gov't spending and budgeting works as he's never done it. Doesn't have the years or decades of working within a party to really understand the people and what he's got to work with and who goes best where. And all of that is visible in his actions to date. From an experience and competency point of view he's not fit to lick the bottom of PP's boot. You on the left have the most insane idea of what experience means that I've ever encountered in my entire life. Somehow you convinced yourself that part-time drama teacher was excellent credentials to run a government. Now you've convinced yourself that banker and tax avoidance specialist makes somebody a great politician. If you need a heart bypass surgery most intelligent people would say I want a career surgeon, not somebody who's been a plumber1 point

You've obviously had trouble following.... No I don't want people lining up at McDonalds and other minimum wage paying jobs....that's been my point, those are generally filled by TFW's because Canadian's are generally taught and raised to build careers, not simply find a low paying job. And no, that's not how it's 'supposed' to work. It works by companies hiring the most qualified and best talent they can find, which would include those minimum wage paying jobs. I live in a strange world because we have workers rights and labor laws? I'd suggest you live in a stranger world with a preconceived racial bias that thinks all TFW's just keep quiet and do what they're told.1 point

Really? That is the wealth of one single person. So it doesn’t really seem like a group of the wealthiest nations on earth should find it a problem to raise that amount. Taxing billionaires an extra 25% would probably cover the costs. Even a modest tax on their wealth growth would increase the government coffers by billions annually. ChatGPT ran the numbers on what would happen if billionaires paid taxes at the same rate middle-class families do — around 15%-22%. Using the ProPublica data, if those top 25 billionaires had been taxed at a 20% rate on their wealth growth, they would have paid around $80 billion instead of $13.6 billion. “Extrapolate that across approximately 1,000 billionaires?” the AI asked. “You’re talking hundreds of billions in added revenue annually.” https://finance.yahoo.com/news/asked-chatgpt-happen-billionaires-paid-170130161.html1 point

You need to learn to read what you post before doing so.... 'She hasn't been able to find a job in her field and said she intends to pursue a master's degree'. "I spent two hours sweeping yesterday, and I have a mechanical engineering degree," said 24-year-old Ben Gooch of Dundas, Ont. The McMaster graduate is working part-time at a garden centre to cover some of his living expenses, having applied for upward of 100 jobs since December with only a handful of interviews to show for it. "I feel like I'm just throwing darts out at a wall and hoping to get lucky and hit something." "It is disheartening," said Thivian Varnacumaaran, an electrical engineering student in his final year at York University who estimates that he's applied for 400 to 500 jobs — with no luck — since he started searching in December. "Long-term earnings prospects are dampened for people graduating during the recession — not because they're not getting jobs, but eventually they fall into a part of the labour market that isn't as high-paying, in types of occupations that they didn't anticipate doing," said Corak. Going back to this statement... As I pointed out before, there are all kinds of horrible things people can get away with in situations where they cannot be easily monitored. All you need is a certain amount of privacy. Even your own home affords a certain amount of privacy to commit crimes. Should we do more to mitigate risk by restricting people from situations where it would not be realistic to catch them doing something?1 point

I disagree entirely. Most of the fires here are in areas where no one would ever be hiking. But I am asking you, do you think entry to the woods should be restricted whenever there are dry conditions? There is hardly a year where there is no period of high fire risk. All you need is a lack of rain for a little while and very hot weather. And people could conceivably be careless with fire at any time. Do you propose banning the forest every year?1 point

We used to be.... what? Canadian's have a lot invested in the US markets, but the TSX is at an all time high. Does Carney get credit for that? I am invested in Canadian companies as I'd guess most Canadian's who invest in one way or another are. You're invested in US companies and other countries in a roundabout way through CPP. People chase the money and US tech stocks in particular are performing right now. When they don't people will move money elsewhere.1 point
