Some of my relatives were military. One was Slovakian and had to fight along side the germans. When WWII happened he was in Alberta starting a farm and family. From a pie in the sky POV it may seem like allowing millions of people across the border every year is just neighbourly, but it's like the argument that went to court in BC here over a decade ago, when some Indo-Canadian developers tried to say that not allowing monster homes to be built on any lot, anywhere in BC was discriminatory. It's just a myopic POV. Infrastructure has to precede development. Schools, water mains, sewage systems, hospitals, transportation corridors, the power grid, etc all need to be beefed up in advance of development on a major scale. You can't just quadruple the number of bathroom fixtures and electric outlets in a neighbourhood without major consequences. You also can't just add 2M poor people to the population every year and hope that no one ends up homeless. Right after the government's duty to provide safety for it's citizens comes the duty to protect their way of life and standard of living. The last part may sound trivial but it's not. Basically everything that politicians promise their constituents is related to standard of living. So, does the open borders policy protect the standard of living of America's poorest people? You know, the ones who the Dems pretend to care for? Not at all. It's almost a war on them. Illegal immigrants compete for starter jobs, compete for low-income housing, they bring drugs and crime to the poorest neighbourhoods, they overcrowd schools, etc. If you were a single mom living in the southern US and looking for work so that you can stay in your home, you'd see the incoming horde as a direct threat to your entire way of life. Being a homeless mom isn't an option. Prostitution is. Selling drugs is. Marrying a violent drunk with a job is.

The perception of Canada outside the country has changed. Our government is perceived by mainstream western societies as overbearing, arbitrary, and largely in the hands of international political entities. Less democratic and sovereign than we used to be. It’s not a good look.

Seems you don't understand the human rights we uphold, which is the right of everybody, including LGBTQ+ people, not to be demeaned and attacked, especially by people in positions of power. We are a progressive country, and as such we protect people from being targetted and persecuted for race, religion or sexual orientation - a right which Barry Neufeld is actively opposing, and frequently disregards in his public statements. As a private citizen, he can say what he wants. As a public official, I expect him to uphold the same human rights Canada and Canadians do. Just like Christians will toss people out of their congregation for expressing views contrary to their particular philosophy, I'm perfectly fine tossing public officials out their job for expressing views contrary to Canada's values and culture.

More like holding people accountable for their actions. There is a mechanism for contesting fines with a judge as arbiter if you choose to use it. If not, pay up.

It's been done for years with traffic fines, failure to pay child support etc. You have a limited amount of time to contest any fine, failure to do so is an admission of guilt. All you can do is contest the constitutionality of the law itself.

This is a fact of life in every country in the world. It is arguably less so in democratic countries, but its existence does not presage communism, that's just silly. Smart and engaged citizens would know that the primary importation of Covid to Canada was via the States, banning travel from Wuhan would have made little or no difference. Canada did, in fact, ban travel from China prior to banning it from the States. The "swallowing" of BS seems to be prevalent among a certain conservative subset, not among the "smart and engaged" population.
