cougar Posted July 3, 2025 Report Posted July 3, 2025 That lady they interviewed would kill me laughing: "Summers are typically fire season in Lytton." she says before correcting herself. https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/9.6819292 Quote
herbie Posted July 4, 2025 Report Posted July 4, 2025 Ever been there? Lytton- - Lilloet is HOT in summer, Hot, hot, hot, hot! Close the sunroof hot, put the top on the jeep hot. I could hear my ol' lady sizzling like bacon in a pan. Gun it to make part of the Fraser Canyon narrow enough to get only 6 hours of sun in a day. 2 Quote
eyeball Posted July 4, 2025 Report Posted July 4, 2025 Out here in the fog zone, the 2km strip of rainforest against the Pacific, we just got notice our home insurance will be cancelled because of a fire burning less than 50 kms away...unless we pony up $11000 a year. I guess it doesn't help that it costs $400 a square foot to build/replace a house around here nowadays. It cost me $30 when I built it. 1 Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
herbie Posted July 4, 2025 Report Posted July 4, 2025 Funny how I get home from Stewart BC and it'd pi$$ed rain the whole time I was gone. Then a bit of rain daily so lawn sprouted like mad. And the same BS. Home insurance doubling next year, people being refused altogether in spite of massive firebreaks, equipment in stock and ready and being on the shores of a massive lake. But we have the 'freedom of choice' as to who won't insure or will gouge us the most. Quote
eyeball Posted July 4, 2025 Report Posted July 4, 2025 Agents I've talked to are comparing the situation in Southern California to our situation. We sometimes see and smell smoke from fires and burning in central Vancouver island but there's never been a record of any sort of wildfire in the fog zone. Slash burning can get out of control on occasion. I guess one day we'll probably need a government home insurance plan if private insurers continue balking. herbie Posted July 4, 2025 Report Posted July 4, 2025 We did have that option with ICBC for rural homes once. Last summer I drove through Lytton there were no fires at the time but it was hot and all you could smell was dry, dry wood all the way from 100 Mile House south to Boston Bar. I'm glad we sold our cabin near 70 Mile, a fire came within 200m of it the year before, cut the property value almost in half. Quote
ExFlyer Posted July 11, 2025 Report Posted July 11, 2025 Insurance is a lot of people paying up to be able to pay a few people out. Insurance operates by pooling the contributions of many insured individuals to cover the losses of a few. This collective approach allows for the spreading of risk and makes it more manageable for individuals. So, we pay because others suffered catastrophic events. Same goes for car insurances. People in rural communities pay because accident events in the cities are extraordinarily high. Quote You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to tell me what mine should be.
herbie Posted July 12, 2025 Report Posted July 12, 2025 On the other hand, people in rural areas that have most accidents are drunk rednecks that refuse to wear seatbelts and are ripping down a gravel road at 120 and end up dead. Dead people can't sue and no one to pay the car for other than the loan company. And the insurance lawyers are so smart they know MoneyMart will settle for a dime on the dollar and the 32 yr old truck isn't worth the $100K like the poor plowboy saw on some TV car rebuilder show thought it was. Heck ya know we in the boonies all drive 1976 F100s with 460cid engines that can drive 250 miles on five bucks worth of gas. So all my neighbours tell me. (TRUTH: this place is so hick, the QwikCash went tits up) Quote
herbie Posted July 30, 2025 Report Posted July 30, 2025 So is it still "hilarious" when for the 2nd time since this post wemt up there's another huge fire burning near Lytton? 2 Quote

It's what's left of the towns in the Fraser Canyon. Wasn't forest fires made that happen. Forestry was the main reason they all existed. The Coquihalla toll removal sealed the doom of the whole area. The amount of fires right now in Sask-MB-western Ontario is insane. We're lucky there aren't more people who live in those areas, but a lot of fires are on native reserves. I don't know how they even breathe right now. We need to massively scale up our forest fighting abilities nationwide. I've never seen anything like this in my lifetime. Southern Califonia is obviously far more populated so the human damage is bad, but the scale and # of fires can't be even remotely close. To top it off, the fires are releasing a ton of CO2 so if this is a regular or annual thing this is bad. herbie Posted August 6, 2025 Report Posted August 6, 2025 Nobody's seen anything like it in their lifetime. Something changed,ao what then could possibly be adding to the cause? Must be Teslas self combusting in the forests. Wind turbines attracting lightning strikes. The eve increasing number of smokers tossing cigarette butts out the window. All those native elders that used to rake the forests that are at the Bingo instead. Right? Hear about the bird near Ashcroft that dropped a fish onto power lines and started one? Made US news! https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bird-blamed-fish-power-line-fire-canada/ Quote
Aristides Posted August 6, 2025 Report Posted August 6, 2025 Did a road trip up the Fraser Canyon in June for the first time in decades. Dropped into Lytton to have a look. Some rebuilding has been done but a lot left to do and not much in the way of businesses. More often than not it gets the title of the hottest place in the country. The fire is thought to have been human caused, probably from a train but nothing confirmed. The fire near there now was caused by a wheel coming off a RCMP trailer and starting a grass fire. Quote
herbie Posted August 7, 2025 Report Posted August 7, 2025 That was the last one. The current fire started on the other side of the river just July 28 Might need to take the Coq if I go down there for my sister's bday in a couple weeks if the fires along the canyon don't let up. Worked in Williams Lake and lived in Burnaby back around 1982. In lieu of airfare home every 2 weeks we could take the equivalent of hotel & meals for a weekend and drive home in 5 hours. Carpooled with coworkers like that for nearly a year, got to know that Canyon almost to drive it blindfolded. Saw the gas stations, restaurants, fruit stands and motels disappearing even then, sweet f*cl all left now. Quote

SpankyMcFarland Posted August 12, 2025 Report Posted August 12, 2025 There’s no doubt wildfires in Canada are causing more destruction these days. Quote ‘How small we make our worlds. Gather them in, tighten them up into little castles of fear.’
