Monarchs based abroad that we share with other countries are not ideal. Their loyalties are divided. Two examples. Firstly, our head of state hasn’t visited in fifteen years. Secondly, the UK head of government, desperate for a trade deal with Trump, won’t let him support us openly.

Yes August but at least we get along....

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

I met Charles - large nose. (I also met Chirac, a smoker.)

I'm surprised about Carney's obsession with the British sovereignety.

Harper is surely jealous.

We are facing a guy like Trump who looks at real numbers.

Carney, you care about symbols.

I would imagine that carney was hoping to showcase our connections to and ties to Europe, but as you say I think it will fall completely flat with trump. It's a little too subtle

A bigger concern is how Quebec is going to take it. Apparently they're none too happy. Right now every move they make has got to be considered against the backdrop of unity

Are you still holding on to the idea that Trump is actually smart?

He told Carney that Canada doesn't do much business with the US, didn't he?

Carney is a career banker, and Trump is a career Carnival Barker.

You have this exactly backwards

What obsession??

The Governor General who is the King/Queens representative has to give the throne speech. This time, the King was invited and he accepted. The GG does not need to "represent" as the King will be here in person..

The King is our head of state. His function as King of Canada is completely separate from his function as King of the UK. It's clearly spelled out in our constitution. Same as Australia and New Zealand. It's odd and it's unique but having a non political head of state, separate from government is a good thing in my opinion.

Having Charles open Parliament will send a reminder to Trump and Americans how we are different and why.

Just imagine the nuclear fallout from the usual suspects if Poilievre had invited Charles.

There would need to be a 25 mile no go zone around this board.

Perhaps you don't understand having a King is more than symbols.

We have a Constitutional Monarchy which gives the King certain powers.   He is there as an unelected monarch which is different than the American system, where the elected President is the head of state.  Our King doesn't have to spend too much time thinking about politics while the President is a central political figure.  Everything must be geared to politics.

Because the King is also King of other countries that is actually an advantage, not a problem.  It means we have a special relationship with those other countries.  They are kind of sister or brother countries, or allies if you wish.

If we were not a Constitutional Monarchy, I think there is a good chance we would already be part of the U.S.  We might not be an independent country.  Being a part of this Constitutional Monarchy does command a certain degree of respect from other countries.

Ha Ha Ha. It is an honour to have the actual King of Canada to read the Speech from the Throne.

What a dolt you are. Canada is honoured.

Not for quebec.  They get very very upset about it.
And his victory came at the expense of the bloc and strong quebec support. This is a serious slap in the face to them, right after Blanchet said "you owe quebec".

Good God, pretending to be Conservatives and belittling the King's reading of the Throne Speech. It's a goddam honour for us and for the King to do on his first showing in Canada.
It's also a thunb to stick in Trump's eye to show we're not some 51st state candidate.

Imagine that - a head of state with a sense of decency, duty, and honour rather than accepting bribes of jet planes, wanting to rid habeas corpus, belittling universities, and demanding nations bend to his will. Who's the real King and who's the tyrant?

Still a minority?  Hmmmmm. Must sting a bit.

So... that doesn't really have anything to do with what we were talking about. We were talking about the monarch and quebec?  Did you forget?

Look man, you have to stop crying about the election at some point. There will be more elections down the road, you can't be this sad all the time!

Smart move on Carney's part. The first time the Monarch has opened parliament since the seventies. What a contrast to the orange buffoon down south.

This makes no sense whatsoever. They don't have throne speeches in the states Largely because they don't have a throne. And I guarantee you it would tick off a hell of a lot of Americans to have the English monarch read one if they did. They fought a bit of a war over that

And why is it a smart move? Like I said it's alienating a lot of Canadians at a time when unity should be our biggest Factor. Quebec is going to hate this, and there are anti-sovereign forces outside of Quebec that don't believe we should be part of a monarch  . Trump isn't going to understand the symbolism, he's not even going to watch it.

So in what world is spreading more divisions in Canada at this particular moment in our history a smart move?
