Sure, and it's hardly the first time. The Americans have gone through several isolationist phases. In fact they were pretty darn isolationist going into world war II till they got the snickerdoodles bombed out of them at pearl harbor and suddenly realized that being isolationist doesn't mean you're safe.

I don't think this is going to be a good time for them, I think they've made a mistake and that it will affect their economy for quite some time depending entirely on how long trump keeps this up. But unless it takes another radical turn this nonsense will probably be over within 2 or 3 years and five years after that people will remember that America is the largest economy in the world and they will want to sell it crap.

Such amnesia might apply in South East Asia but we won’t forget this in Canada for decades at least. When was the last time they did something like this?

Well maybe, but we've forgotten it fairly quickly the last two times it happened.  To the point where most Canadians don't remember it happened 2 times before.

Turns out “elbows up” means reducing tariffs on American imports to near zero.

Despite all the rhetoric from Mark Carney and the Liberals, a new report shows that Canada has effectively eliminated tariffs on most goods. Oxford Economics, a global advisory firm, looked into the matter and found tariffs are nullified by exemptions and suspensions to effectively mean the tariffs are either gone or near zero in most cases.

The US doesn't have the ability to 100% sole source their steel and aluminum production locally. This just means inflationary effects for the American consumer.

The US imports 60% of its aluminum, almost all of it from Canada. They don't have the generating or smelting capacity to replace it. Americans can look for big price increases in products with high aluminum content. American products will become even less competitive in world markets.
