His unit did in fact see combat, the Command Sergeant Major who took his place was there, the one criticizing him. 

The Guard doesn't selectively recall people, things like that are a big deal and are used for emergency purposes and does not change the evidence we have from others who served saying his motivations to leave were to avoid being deployed. 

The unit was deployed as artillery support to defend an air base.

So? The air base was in a war zone, and they had guns with live ammo pointed at the enemy. They were also wearing uniforms so they made targets of themselves for the enemy to kill. That's called "being deployed in a combat role in an active war zone".

Do yo think that infantrymen in combat zones don't appreciate artillerymen who are there protecting a base with them? Do you think that they don't consider them fellow veterans? Do you think that artillerymen don't get killed in wars?

And it sounds like there was a little stolen valor, he talked about the 'weapon he carried in combat' a few times and he never carried a weapon in combat. 

So there you go. People can consider both and make their decisions but lets not pretend both were not true. He served as a 'tactical paper pusher' - which is fine, that's still service and the military doesn't just run on charging the enemy, they need other service as well.  And he didn't want to go to real combat, again that's fine but people should know what he did and decide and neither side should be downplayed, But he doesnt' get to speak like a combat vet, that's for sure and he did do that a bit

I’m not buying that and nobody is.  

He didn't serve in any war zones, so you have no point there.

You and I will never know if, due to his position, he got advance notice of that deployment ahead of his troops. 

All we know is that they say he put in his papers in May 2005 and the unit got notice in July 2005.

After 24 years of service he just got notice 2 months before retirement? That's pretty random.

Also, the way troop deployments work, it would be known that troops currently in Iraq would be cycling out after their tour of duty, so even if Walz didn't get notification yet, it's very likely that he'd know if theirs was one of 2 or 3 or 5 units that might get the call.

Also, Trump never lied and said that he carried a gun in a war zone. That's a brutal lie. I know quite a few actual vets, and nothing that I ever did comes even remotely close to what they went through. 

You little armchair quarterbacks wanna say a veteran is a veteran is a veteran but that's not the case at all. The difference between an actual vet and a fake vet like myself is like the difference between fishing for crab off the Alaskan coast and fishing for perch off of the dock. The two are unrelated.

But I’m done here.  You’re attacking a 24-year veteran so you can support a draft dodger.  Talk about lying… Donald Trump got five deferments to avoid the draft, including one where he had a doctor clearly lie about “bone spurs” which somehow made him ineligible for combat, without interfering with his participation in college tennis.
