Snopes is Utter Crap/Kamala Harris is Likely Descended from Slave Owners.

Quote

In his Jamaica Global article, Harris claimed to be descended from the 19th-century planter and slave owner Hamilton Brown. He wrote:

“My roots go back, within my lifetime, to my paternal grandmother Miss Chrishy (née Christiana Brown, descendant of Hamilton Brown who is on record as plantation and slave owner and founder of Brown’s Town) and to my maternal grandmother Miss Iris (née Iris Finegan, farmer and educator, from Aenon Town and Inverness, ancestry unknown to me).

Snopes officially calls this account "unproven" even though they acknowledge that it's Kamala Harris's own father who made the claim that their family owned slaves less than a century before he was born.

This is a far more specific claim than Elizabeth Warren's claim to way-back Native American heritage. FWIW here's what Snopes said about her heritage question:

Quote

BOSTON (AP) — Responding to years of derision by President Donald Trump and other critics, Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday released a report on a DNA analysis that provides strong evidence she does, in fact, have Native American heritage.

LMFAO. They don't give it a "proven" rating, they don't actually give it a "rating" at all, they just say "her DNA test provides strong evidence". They skipped the actual rating because if they did it would have to be "false". That's because she never claimed to be "somewhere between 1/128th and 1/1024th native", she claimed to be a native, and Trump's claim that she was drastically lying by calling herself native on her Harvard entry is bang-on.

Anyhoo, back to Snopes disgusting article on Harris, they are looking down their noses at various "right-leaning" sites for reporting on an issue that undoubtedly has merit, even by their own admission:

Quote

1) the right-leaning website “Big League Politics”

2) The “Red State” website published a similar post,

3) Similar reports appeared on right-leaning blogs and websites in January and February 2019. All of them were based on an account written by Donald Harris, a retired Stanford University economics professor and the father of Sen. Harris.

Snopes thinks that they are throwing shade at them for publishing these claims, but they were made by her own father, and they are about someone who died less than 90 years before he was born. IMO that's very good reason to publish those claims. There's no reason to believe that his own family wouldn't be aware of who his ancestors were just a few generations ago, and it's not like he was claiming to be descended from someone awesome. Not many people would make up a story that they were descended from a huge loser.

This reminds me of a friend I had back in my early 20's. His name was Kwame and he was half Jamaican and half Nigerian. He went to Nigeria to meet his dad's family and he found out that they were all highly-educated, they were fairly well-to-do, and they were descended from bigtime slave-owners back in the day. It struck me as ironic that if I went into a bar down in Georgia with him the most racist and uninformed people down there would think of me as a slaver and him as a victim.

My ancestors worked in coal mines back when they were dangerous, they farmed other people's fields and they fought in wars. Living in a shack on the prairies and working in a coal mine back in the '30's wasn't much better than being a slave, and fighting in a war is worse.

I have a huge hatred for condescending Democrat/Liberal morons who act like they belong on a pedestal virtue-signalling when they're actually just ignorant bigots.

Just because her father believes it to be true (and it probably is) doesn't make it proven. There are errors all over the place in people's genealogical records. You can't confirm or deny anything based on hearsay. I would think you would hold your information to a higher standard than that.

Apparently Alexandria Ocasio Crazy-Eyes is a Jew according to this babbling moron.

Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revealed she had Jewish ancestry, sparking a social media storm

Not at all. There's no evidence and every Rabbi has a file, that he transfers to other Rabbis, to keep the names and origins.

For example, my grand-father was a Jew in Brazil, and is still recorded as a Jew in Brazil even though he converted to Catholicism. With Crazy Eyes Cortez, it's impossible for her to have Jewish ancestry, I don't believe it whatsoever.

I guess Snopes has been too often proving right-wing news stories false.

If I was a researcher for Snopes, I would look for something else to corroborate the claim.   Perhaps no birth records could be found.  Maybe he is descended from the bastard child of a slave owner; after all Jamaicans are not white and even if free, unlikely to have been married to a White plantation owner.

My grandmother once told me that our family is related to Lord Stanley, of Stanley Cup and Stanley Park fame.  Is it true?  Probably; she'd have no reason to lie.  But I can't find the actual connection despite hours spent on ancestry and looking through old documents from my grandmother's house.  "Unproven" is what I would call this statement by my grandmother, even though I'm happy to claim it as my heritage.

I am supposedly descended from a guy named John Palmer. According to the birth and death dates provided by Ancestry.ca, he lived to be 117 years old. Go figure. As I tell my children, it is your first name that counts, not your last name. Your reputation is based on your own actions, not those of your parents, which is fortunate for my kids.

Snopes does tend to confirm liberal biases, it is biased, but not as much as others.  The new left hates anyone they don't agree with (or at least dislikes intensely) therefore...   you get the picture.

Nope, it confirms RW spreads false news, which is not the same as "Liberal bias".

In your opinion of course.

Of course, you could try putting Liberal claims to the test by checking them on Snopes or Politifact or other similar sites.  I offer facts to progressive-types who post BS on Facebook regularly.  Not so much here because the progressive types here are pretty fact-based.  You might be surprised how often Snopes and others debunk Liberal claims too.

How does someone complain about the "hate of the left" while criticizing an objective site that reports on verifiable facts while completely ignoring this openly hateful diatribe?

The lack of self-awareness is astounding.

Snopes has a bias towards verifiable facts. Trumpers on this site whine that you're personally attacking them and try to have your posts deleted when you point out that their posts are untrue. I can see how they think truth has a liberal bias

I just said it's likely. It's worthy of reporting on if her own father said it. He would almost certainly have known his grandparents very well, seeing as his family was well-off enough for him to have received an education over there, and his grandparents would know for sure.

Snopes is trying to make it seem as though reporting on it was irresponsible but if this story was about a Republican, or especially trump, it would be headline news on CNN for months.

I bet you could if you really set your mind to it. Make a donation to the Dems or Libs, join a far-left group and go to some protests, wear a badge, prove that you can read and write, you're probably  guaranteed a spot.

Your argument would be better if you were able to corroborate her dad's story yourself. Why not give it a try? You can get ancestry.com on most public library computers. Find a census entry or birth or baptismal certificate that confirms it.

Of course you won't because you know people already tried and failed. So instead you try and pretend they're all just biased socialists. It's a stupid, boring way to debate, but I guess it fools the dumb people you want to fool.

Representative Harris' pedigree is irrelevant just as the allegation that the President's grand father ran a whorehouse in the Yukon. A person's actions are the only basis for assessment, not who their parents were.

Exactly.

That's why I loathe Justin Trudeau's ascension politically. Not hating on the guy, but he's just Prime Minister because of his name. We should feel ashamed to have elected this steaming sh(t as PM.

But he did get the most seats. I am reminded of General MacArthur's response when as Military Governor of Japan, he introduced Parliamentary democracy with universal suffrage and there was a complaint that a winning candidate was a prostitute. He asked "How many votes did she get?" In a democracy, the voters are always right.
