My answer would be pretty much the same. I'm not that familiar with the 777 so I don't know enough to say it would be impossible but going by the aircraft I have flown, I can't see how it would be done. The aircraft can send systems information to the ground but doesn't rely on receiving any to operate. In this respect it is self contained. I doesn't even use GPS in the way most people think of it. It uses inertial navigation systems and only uses GPS to update those systems. Even if all the GPS satellites stopped working it would still be able to navigate as well as the pre GPS aircraft of the eighties and nineties. As On Guard for Thee has pointed out, all these systems can be switched off by the crew and the aircraft can be flown either by entering pitch and roll commands manually or hand flying the aircraft. Just manually applying a control force opposite to what the autopilot is commanding will trip the autopilot off. I can't imagine control being taken from the pilots without some major reprogramming and re-engineering of the aircraft's systems.

Found a link that pretty much puts the final nail in the coffin in regards to the stolen passport Iranian plot.

http://ri.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0LEVjkAES5TK3EAWjkXFwx.;_ylu=X3oDMTByb2h1ajk3BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDOARjb2xvA2JmMQR2dGlkAw--/RV=1/RE=1395614337/RO=10/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.theglobeandmail.com%2fnews%2fworld%2fnew-details-emerge-about-men-who-used-stolen-passports-on-malaysian-jetliner%2farticle17391753%2f/RS=%5EADAs._oKLqYCkpwpFlZeQqvcVtzQJ8-

In the link an expert added that the passports wouldn't be checked in Beijing because of the in transit status. However this is false. I have travelled in transit through Beijing before and security is tight there!

But still nothing solid to go on.

This incident is huge in that part of the world!

The Australian PM making updates in parliament, and all the involved PM's contacting each other directly just shows how serious everyone is!

Still too many questions.

Unfortunately the current weather is crap so the search a/c are grounded.

Just watched the Mandarin edition on OMNI news and still nothing!

The plane has been missing now for almost three weeks and still nothing?

This is getting ridiculous!

How did this plane end up all the way there in the first place???

Why the freak out? Its at the bottom of the Indian Ocean, 7000m down.

Takes time.

That's not what a lot of people in China are thinking.

http://t.news.ca.msn.com/world/china-demands-satellite-data-on-missing-plane

China is demanding to see the satellite image for themselves!

How that plane ended up all the way down there is going to be the biggest debate I predict.

It might never be found. They are finally starting to troll for the black boxes. The clock is ticking on that too.

If that is the case, then this will be always a mystery!

Hundreds of planes and ships have gone "missing" over the years. It took two years and over $100 million to find Air France Flight 447, and they had a much better idea where to look.

Just aerial disappearances alone ... fascinating

Including this one:

68 people and wreckage never found

I think there is still a bit of a wait for that. The US is sending equipment but they still have to get it in a boat and get it on sight. Latest I've heard is the best guess is they could get on sight with only 3 days left in the 30 day battery power in the pingers. Let's hope somehow it works.

This link actually shows how rare that this type of disappearance actually is for our modern times!

Those previous planes didn't have engines pinging signals back to satellites with flight information!

I've pretty much given up on this story. I assume it'll be years before anything concrete is actually known as to what exactly happened.

It's unfortunate that you are probably right

Here's an update on the story.

http://t.news.ca.msn.com/world/malaysia-airlines-mh370-new-lead-shifts-search-area

It's been three weeks now and nothing!

The search area keeps changing, so to me it sounds like there is false info coming out or we are being led on a goose chase?

I find it hard to believe that with all the surveillance/tracking ability out there that this plane can just vanish like this.

Obviously somebody wanted this plane to vanish, that much is very clear!

At this point, I believe that more than one person is involved and someone knows more but is keeping quiet.

A 9/11 conspiracy site??? Kind of rich given all the lectures you dish out about reputable sources.

Wikipedia claims that 911 was dialed from a cell phone right before it crashed. The altitude was around 10000 feet at that time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_93

See black box data:

https://www.ntsb.gov/doclib/foia/9_11/Flight_Path_Study_UA93.pdf

At 10K you could get a signal. At 30K, no way. Only because since then the airlines have been trying to figure out how to get cell service in a plane.

The only other thing that could have made a connection at altitude is sat phones.

The experts disagree with you.

Next time you fly, try and get a connection. I flew often with my previous job and not once had I been able to get a signal at altitude. Cell towers are closer to each other than the distance between you and a cell tower when you are flying at 30K. Cell towers may be a couple KMs apart. At 30K that means you are over 5 miles (8 kms) from the nearest tower. The towers don't have that kind of range.

You are flying at 30K feet and about 600 mph. By the time you can actually handshake with one tower, you are already past the next one. The speed plus distance means that is is practically impossible to get a cell connection at altitude.

Now that might be the case today where 13 years after 9/11 the technology and cell tower placement has exponentially exploded and has drastically improved. Back in 2001, cell towers were not that common. I was using that old Nokia brick which did not even get reception in an elevator, never mind at 30K feet.

So the experts may be right about it now, but that was not the case then.
