kimmy Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 The less-than-stellar Avengers: Age of Ultron movie kind of dampened my enthusiasm for the Marvel movies, but I decided to give Ant-Man a look when I noticed it's on Netflix. I actually quite enjoyed it, in large measure because of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang. His dorky, good-natured charm makes him easy to cheer for. It was also nice to see Michael Douglas back on screen, playing Mr Miyagi to Rudd's Danny. Douglas portrays Dr Henry Pym, the original and long-retired Ant-Man, who needs an apprentice for an important mission... and he's convinced that Scott Lang is the man for the job. Evangeline Lilly co-stars as Dr Pym's skeptical daughter Hope. The premise of the movie-- Ant-Man can shrink to tiny size and control legions of highly-enthusiastic ants-- is used to great effect in creating a number of inventive action sequences and hilarious sight-gags. While other super-hero movies are leveling entire cities, Ant-Man has a train-wreck... involving a model train-set. I think what makes Ant-Man work is the same elements that made Guardians Of The Galaxy such a huge hit-- inventiveness, a brisk pace, a good mix of action and comedy, and characters that audiences connect with. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
overthere Posted August 29, 2016 Report Posted August 29, 2016 Just saw Hell or High Water, a modern Western set in poor rural Texas. This is one of the best movies I've seen this year. Great soundtrack, great cinematography and a well written script that is acted well. It features screen bros Ben Foster and Chris Pine(Star Trek link) as real bros who make some bad decisions in pursuit of a noble end. Jeff Daniels is great in this flick and will get some Oscar buzz. It is somehting of a replay of his previous duster Oscar nomination in True Grit. Also saw Sausage Party. If you thought Team America was funny but too highbrow, check it out. It is very crude and pretty funny- the first animated R rated movie. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!

Hal 9000 Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 I just watched Watermelon Man again - a timeless classic from 1970. If anyone hasn't seen it, I recommend they do. Guest Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 I just watched the 2013 Robert Reich doc, Inequality For All. The full movie is available on YouTube and is something everyone should watch at some point. In just 1.5 hours it quickly explains the relationship between fiscal policies on our economy and standard of living and does a good job of dispelling some economic myths. I also watched Creed; fight movies are a guilty pleasure. This flick is as predictable and formulaic as the other Rocky movies, but it was still alright. Quote

It focuses mainly on diagnosis and does not delve too much into solutions (many of the solutions from the left can only exacerbate the problems identified in the film). May be worth setting up a thread to discuss. Edited September 3, 2016 by TimG Quote
dialamah Posted September 5, 2016 Report Posted September 5, 2016 Requiem for the American Dream, Noam Chomsky. Got me thinking that Trump merely wants to fast-track the "Masters" plan; Hillary is just the slower version toward the same end-point. Quote

Guest Posted September 6, 2016 Report Posted September 6, 2016 I am really looking forward to Author: The JT LeRoy Story. Was anybody aware of this phenomenon in the late 90's and early 00's? I didn't care about pop lit at the time and wasn't aware of the story. However, I recently learned about it and find the whole fake persona becoming a real celebrity thing quite interesting. I'm planning on watching the doc and reading some of Laura Albert's work. I'm told I should start with The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. Quote

Moonlight Graham Posted September 19, 2016 Author Report Posted September 19, 2016 (edited) Batman vs Superman - 7/10 - I really liked the 1st half of the movie, was thought-provoking, but the 2nd half was pretty terrible, turns into some crappy ad for the upcoming Wonder Woman and JLA movies. Also, Jesse Eisenberg is the most annoying and possibly worst young actor in hollywood. X-Men Apocalypse - 7.5/10 - Fun X-men flick. Still not as good as First Class. But there were tons of X-men from the comic who made appearances, the most ever in an X-men flick I think, so that was fun. Apocalypse was decent as a villain but i think they could have done better with him, including making the actor who played him taller and more muscular, he looks like a bit of a wiener. Benz Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 Misconduct It looked like any other generic film at first, but I finally get into it after a while. I like the way that movie leaves you totally uncertain of your own moral. You have to watch it until the end to figure out why I say that. ---------------------------- Horrible Bosses 2 I was expecting it to be as bad as most of number twos. I thought I would quit before the end. I suprised myself to laugh several times. ---------------------------- Unfriended Not a big movie but, there was asomething about it that made me watch it until the end. Quote
