The heart of conservatism - and I am a conservative - is a belief, support and pride for the traditions, values, culture and history of your people (which the Liberals know full well). At least MacDonald gave some natives the vote (he had wanted all of them to be able to vote but the Liberals fought fiercely against this). Laurier swiftly removed it once in office.

I’ve never seen the country so divided. It’s really irresponsible how people are being distinguished along lines of race and other qualities that were deemed of far less importance than character. It’s racism cloaked in the rhetoric of equity. It’s not about equal treatment under the law and employment policy now. It’s organizations making qualitative judgments about people based on superficial features like skin colour. The excuse given is, “Well racialized people endured mistreatment and underrepresentation, so now it’s your turn” [even though in Canada racialized numbers were very low until about 40 years ago]. I don’t see how this new discrimination is acceptable under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but apparently that document applies loosely these days.

Isn't it amazing that, in Canada of all places, bald-faced racism is being driven by our own institutions? Hell by our own Prime Minister. Why? Government has done a truly crap job at protecting our online privacy. Governments don't want us to have privacy, they want to track us as much as companies do. Corporations just want to sell us stuff. The Liberals wanted to get into the bank accounts of Canadians to track their spending habits without our consent. I've seen some Canadians even defend this. So many Canadians roll over and take it up the poop-chute like the submission biznatches they are.

This sort of thing is why you have people saying we shouldn't celebrate Canada Day, why statues are pulled down and all references to Canada's history are replete with whiny complaints about how bad our people were. We bring in half a million immigrants a year. We expect them to want to integrate and be a part of the Canadian family, and then we go on endlessly about what a shit family it is, what a shit country it is, and how everything in our country was horrible. Maybe the notion of economies of scale eludes us when it comes to governance. Why do we need 10 governments all doing the same thing? Because the jobs too big for just one I guess. I think its often to big for 10 governments. Maybe our provinces are too big and something more regional or area based would be more responsive to needs on the ground but then why would we need Ottawa? If we could get things down to just one government...the costs savings alone should have us salivating at the prospect. I'd rather the public try getting more control over Ottawa before anything else. It's the only thing we haven't tried. One big government facilitating hundreds of little regional ones makes sense to me. Please note I didn't say one big government orchestrating hundreds of little one's. It's an important distinction. I know it seems counter-intuitive to ask why we need so many provinces and then propose hundreds of regional ones instead. In any case I think far greater more penetrating control over Ottawa is the key to succeeding at whatever we do. Hopefully it would provide a better example for the provinces to follow and I bet Ottawa would be loath to let lesser governments get away with any opacity they were compelled to clear up.
