I sit on the planning commission for the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District in Area C, the focus of this threads OP. First of all, let me say that within the first couple of months of the pandemic some residents in the area started crying about the death of democracy when we started holding meetings via Zoom so I'm not very surprised at the tone of the threads title. I would argue the opposite is happening and residents in the area are being afforded a greater say in our region. There are 5 1st Nations here that have signed treaties that gives them self governing powers. I think one of the results of that is non 1st Nation communities increasingly want more powers to be self governing too. As for comments about people camping anywhere they want you need you see the sheer numbers of people doing so and the amount of garbage including, abandoned vehicles, that are strewn along logging roads and even highways around here. People around here generally support and agree to measures that address these issues. The bigger threat to our democracy here is from outsiders who act as if they should have every right to do as they want, always has been. Look no further than the state of our fisheries for evidence of that. I'm on record around here for supporting one planetary government but I'm also on record for supporting greater local autonomy. The biggest role for distant governments should be to support that local autonomy. The result, I believe will be more democracy not less. If visitors don't like it, they should go home and demand the same for their regions.2 points

Coalitions work well all over the world. It’s a matter of getting used to them.1 point

I'm afraid you're talking from a platform of all-knowledge and that can distort both understanding of problems and ways (practical and feasible) how to approach them. We seem to agree that the status quo is defunct and ineffective, going forward. That attempting to stretch it into the future would exacerbate existing problems and accelerate emergence of new ones, not in the least via inability to detect them early and find effective ways to address them. Now, if we want to avoid this scenario, we need to find ways of changing, improving the status quo. Again we seem to agree that the role of the public is paramount; a society in a deep democratic slumber cannot be helped. It's only a lottery when bad things would begin to happen, not if. And then, there's a difference of opinions on how to proceed with change. And that's where the problem seem to lie. If both of us are firmly entrenched in our desired outcomes (as opposed to practical and functional solutions to the problem we agreed exists and is essential), then nothing will happen. This is obvious from the start and the discussion can be ended in two posts: I like this and would accept nothing else; and the other, others almost identical to it. Done. And now, if we were looking to get past that point, we would need to a) not rule out anything outright; b) define mutually agreed criteria of how we would judge solutions and c) go ahead and consider all possible solutions fairly and objectively, based on agreed criteria and principles. In the end, if we have more than zero, that would be a huge step forward (but not the end yet). So the question is, are we moving past the position 3 or will be stuck there for the observable perspective. In that latter case, obviously, there would be no solutions to essential problem.1 point

That’s very interesting but of course the important thing is what they voted on together, not how many. Not all cases have equal merit.1 point

The Nazi's formed a coalition too so what? you tout coalitions like it's inherently a good thing or results in less partisanship it doesn't PR sucks you say the only way to see if it works as you claim it will is to try it but it's been tried on numerous occasions never once worked out the way you think it will and the sample size ain't small this time it will work is the same argument the Commies use whenever someone points out how it failed everytime it's a shitty argument for communism and shitty argument for PR1 point

And more BS that you are electing a "representative" rather than, in reality an employee slave of the party office. Just fantasy upon an unbelievable stretch. But the onus was on us to make sure and keep assuring that it makes sense, for us. Always. The moment we go to the grill and leave it to itself it begins spinning - for itself.1 point

Stop trying to not believe something just because you don't like it. I'm not a member of the sheeple, so I'm not going to overstate the level of certainty here, and the one thing that I don't want to vouch for in this story is "what are the exact words in her diary and what is their intended meaning?" I said apparently and I don't want to hang any more credibility on that aspect of this story than 'apparently'. I'm almost 100% certain that there's a diary that belongs to Biden's daughter that ended up in the hands of Project Veritas and the Daily News, and that the people at The Daily News feel like the diary indicates that Joe had showers with her when she was young which she feels were inappropriate, but the buck stops there for now. I expect heartfelt, passionate denials will be coming shortly, replete with accusations of douchebaggery, and comments like "Who would even read from the diary of a recovering addict, let alone share that information on TV and the internet! Just be angry everyone, and disregard this!", but it's still a story right now and it's ok to discuss it honestly and accurately. Just remember, Aristedes, the story came from very credible sources with solid track records for being accurate. If it came from CNN then I agree, the wise decision would be to dismiss it out of hand, but this info is not from an organization that's dedicated to disinformation so the wise thing to do is just file it in your head under "possible, plausible, or even likely, but definitely not proven yet" and then wait for the rebuttals and for other people, who are central to the accusation, to chime in. One thing that gives me reason to take this seriously is that it's also a pretty wicked accusation to make, which would easily blow back in the faces of the story's authors if incorrect. It's at the level of "career-destroying" if there's not some real oomph behind it. Another reason to take it seriously is that the POTUS sent several members of the FBI out to retrieve a diary. The personal diary of a recovering addict. That's pretty weird. They know that it isn't even a stolen diary, it's just a diary that was left behind somewhere. If it belonged to one of Trump's kids, no doubt the FBI would be lying about it to the FISA courts and airing the dirty laundry themselves, but that's not central to this story. The main thing is that the FBI felt like there was info in that diary that was important enough that they needed to invade people's homes to get it. There ya go. We all know that Biden has been credibly accused of rape, and that his kids have always been emotional train wrecks for some reason, and I think we'd all agree that Biden has a really creepy pedo vibe. This seems like a puzzle piece that fits perfectly. I do really feel bad for his daughter right now, and I hope that it doesn't do her more harm than good, but a bigger story is that the information in that diary actually could have been used for blackmail by anyone, not just Russia or China, and now that it's out in the open the opportunity for blackmailing the POTUS with the diary is greatly diminished. Bottom line - a majority of Americans already wish that Joe was out of office, and I doubt that this diary or any statements to come from his daughter in the upcoming weeks will aid in his removal, so it's just basically a case of "now ya know the buzz around this story". It will go away soon. The MSM needs it to go away, and they're the final arbiter. By next Saturday there will be plenty of new lies and disinformation out from the MSM which will distract you from this story. This will fade into oblivion, and maybe in a year or two you'll be looking for something on page 5 of the US Politics section and you'll see this thread and not even remember anything about it at first.1 point

30 years ago New Zealand ditched the FPTP-system and had one referendum since whether to bring it back but that proposal was rejected. They introduced a German-style mixed system whereby half of the seats are still from single-member constituencies but the outcome of the parliament is based on PR in the whole country with a threshold of 5% Not sure whether NZ as a much smaller country is comparable to Canada but just pointing out that there is a precedent of changing the system.1 point

You have a dim view of us. Of course, there are some theives among us. 20% of humans will never steal. 60% will steal if they think they won't get caught, and 20% will steal regardless of the likelyhood of getting caught. Government is a reflection of the people. It is up to us to vet them through the electoral process to find competent administrators with integrity. That is why it is essential to get to know who you are voting for. Fortunately, the people who are chronic theives are unlikely to be involved as candidates. Running for election is hard work. If MP's are crooks, they aren't very good ones. Most of them are carrying heavy personal debt loads. If people are too lazy to participate in one of the most important features of democracy, then the result is their fault. The party lable doesn't mean much in governing. Governments have a narrow range of choices. That is why, when Saskatchewan elects an NDP government, they govern like Progressive Conservatives. So do most federal Liberal governments and CPC governments. It is competance of the individual that matters. Every once in a while, someone like Glenn Clark in BC gets elected, but not usually.1 point

I am at a loss and a reason as to why there is this gong show trial hearing going on when the midterms are only just 5 months away? Why bother now? All I can see here is that the dumbocrats must be scared as shit that they may lose the midterms, and thus this is probably their last hope and chance in trying to get Trump on anything and then hopefully get elected once again by we the people. It won't work though. Rumor has it that nobody is really watching the hearing at all. I was watching Watters on FOX NEWS last night, and he did a street interview, and spoke too many people about the hearing. 90% of the people that he spoke to did not even hear or know about any hearing. So, it sure looks to me like this is just another lefty liberal going nowhere pile of bullshit for the dumbocrats once again. What makes these dumbocrats so stupid? I just do not get it. ?1 point

Well, you could read the article. I'm not so divorced from reality that I can't admit this highly emotional subject has resulted in violence on both sides.1 point

Yeah, let’s see what the definition used for “violence” against abortion clinics. Kicking the door one time? Shouting outside a clinic? It’s such a non specific phrase, and people with an agenda love to manipulate the numbers. Like saying there’s been 20+ mass shootings at schools in the US this year alone. And then you find out included in the stat is one student shooting another, or a gun going off. In Chicago they call that a “miss”.1 point

1. Ok, true. 2. Cheating happened in the 2020 election, but it always does. Bringing court cases as Giuliani did is a different thing. He is in trouble, not because he couldn't prove it but because he didn't have valid claims or evidence when he brought the case. The claim was a systemic and planned effort to steal the election. 3. Yes this is true. 4. Right and not only was it not proven, but Giuliani is in trouble for bringing claims to the court that were not investigated adequately, ie. abusing the court. 5. It's not that I like it or don't like it. I'm just pointing out that you are doing emotional "angry politics". I'm just pointing out that your emotional investment in these things isn't matched by mine. I share your concerns about Global Corporations and Global Power to a degree, but if you are so blinded by anger to see only allies and enemies we're wasting our time talking about it. 6. Deep dive a bit into how "politicians" (kind of a non specific term) overlap their interests with those of their constituents. I am confident that the mindset is not anything unique to Republicans, Liberals, Socialists or anyone. Politician is a job. Just like a ditch digger from India or America would likely see their role in society in a similar way, I'm sure that politicians do also. Keeping them honest is our job as "the" public. It's not our job to pretend we're one of them and defend everything our team does.1 point

There's no fringe. There's the truth and there are lies, and just because you won't admit that you were stooged doesn't mean that you weren't stooged. It just makes you even more of a liar. You just don't "know" anything until it gets the official "propaganda" stamp and gets aired on CBC. The fact that you have no self-respect is what you should be worried about. If the conservatives did this, I might vote for them. For me, electoral deform and democracy are the most important issues because they affect all the other issues. For example, if we had more competent people in power at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, maybe we would of had better results.1 point

They told fishermen we had no choice but to submit to 100% observer coverage or tie up and not fish. If human observers on board were too much for industry it was told to come up with a system that DFO could live with. Now we have a system by which every fish that comes aboard is captured by cameras from different angles and GPS records the location. This is attended by a written record. DFO knows where we are at all times when we're fishing. Planes with powerful cameras also patrol fishing grounds for vessels to verify locations and look for pollution and such. Human observers are at the dock when we arrive to offload to validate and verify that all the data matches up. Make to many mistakes or get caught cheating and its human observers for you. There were a thousand questions and a million doubts it would ever work. The motivation to find a way was strong though...no fishing. You need people who have no choice but to change the system - whether they like it or not. I'm reminded of the old notion of locking politicians into their parliaments until they come up with a solution to a problem and cutting off food, water and finally bathrooms to help sharpen their motivation.0 points
