  1. Our politicians are so afraid of saying anything that might offend or play badly on social media that they are mere ciphers. None of them will say the statements that most Canadians know are true, that the media coverage of child burial cites at former Residential School misconstrues them as mass murder burial sites when they are very likely TB, Spanish Flu, or other causes of death. None of them will admit that our carbon taxes will do hardly anything to prevent climate change though they do drive up the cost of living in a very impactful way. None of them is going to question the level of cultural conflict or carbon footprint of high immigration levels. These types of topics are simply outside of the public political discussion, even though all three have huge impacts on social cohesion, a sense of pride and self-efficacy, the environment, and standard of living. Our politicians are too scared to have honest discussions about the issues that matter. In fact, rather than make hard decisions, the current approach is to borrow more money and throw it at problems, even when they aren’t the real problems.

  3. I figured this thread would fit better under Travel/Leisure/Sports even though I got the idea from a business/economy topic about why we're still using physical money. Personally I hope we keep using it because I collect it. "Real" money is neat. I have a large paper money collection I refer to as my "Dictator's Hall of Fame". Not too much American money, though; but I do have a $1 and $5 silver certificates from the 1930's. The most rare thing I had was a 1919 10,000 rouble note with little hammers and sickles all over it and "Worker's of the World Unite!" around the edges in different languages. My biggest mistake was selling it when I was hard up for real money. I have a few coins, but nothing near what I have in paper. Mostly Kennedy half dollars. I also have some unissued stock and bond certificates that look great. Anyone else into money-collecting?

  4. The newly elected Lt. governor of Virginia sent the douche bags at the Lincoln Project a fruit basket! ?

  5. Weird we WERE talking about the newspaper bailot, then it switched to CTV (started by Conservatives by the way) and an anecdotal summary of media bias with no cites. And yet it was the Globe and Mail that broke the SNC Lavalin story, after which the Liberals got knocked down to minority status, never yet to recover. I hear people say that Global is in the Liberals' pocket but they broke videos of Trudeau in black/brown face and also evading the first Truth and Reconciliation day. Damn media. Doing so much for Trudeau.

  6. The left is just going to keep banning jobs. Forestry, gas, oil, etc. They actually think it’s going to help make Canada better. They’re insane.

  7. Well it was a one in a million opportunity and why wouldn't one take it? And now they like it too! Now we are well into "reopening" according to the news at least, are the obscene $360K plus benefits salaries are going to come down to their "normals" of $200K? Try to guess when it's going to happen (or if).

  8. How did they determine definitively that the mom caught it from a family member who was not vaxxed? Did she never leave the house? Never went to the grocery store or pharmacy? Never ate out at a restaurant? And only ever had contact with that one member of her family? How did they determine this? I ask because few places are doing contact tracing anymore. And it's increasing obvious that both vaxxed and unvaxxed spread covid. There was a nightclub in BC (Blue Grotto? I think) posted on facebook that in spite of checking everyone's vax passes before the show, almost 60 people caught covid that evening - all vaxxed. There wasn't one unvaxxed person there that they could blame it on.

  9. We’re expanding our population at a far greater pace than the ability of gut health care system to produce enough doctors and nurses to compensate. The ratio of patients per doctors and patients per nurses is growing exponentially. But the endless unlimited immigration crowd don’t care. They don’t care about the impact on housing, on the environment, on education, on anything.

  10. Look into the costs of the energy production systems taking into account actual energy production. The only way the costs can come down somewhat is through regulation (building code) and engine/motor/battery specifications. Mass production will reduce unit cost, but it’s unlikely that green power will provide enough juice for our manufacturing, heating, and electric vehicles. The trick is to boost hydro and nuclear (though those have GG emissions problems with concrete production, at least initially) and incorporate green power in standard building materials such as solar shingles, but they’ll need to be mandated by codes and regulations. Carbon taxes on fuel are mostly expensive fake action, like “Drive Clean.” We also need high speed rail and much better electric commuter rail options.

  11. Covid is the excuse used for non-essential restrictions on freedoms and invasions of privacy. Too bad. People won’t resist, which makes them perfect slaves.

  12. We do NOT have enough doctors. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many people who can't get a GP and you wouldn't have to wait for months and months to see any specialist or surgeon. We have a much lower number of doctors to population as compared to European countries.

  14. They actually said than, and also achieved excellent results in management of the epidemics by shutting down entire regions and total surveillance and enforcement of policies without regard to the "rights", "accountability", "common sense" and other such triffles. Did you say, it reminded you of something?

  16. Seriously though, with that autopilot $400K compensation "travel from Wuhan" style of management, does anybody here still have the ability to observe and notice? Has anybody noticed for example, that the toll per case in the country is a multiple, 3.5 times to 10, of European countries like Finland, Norway, Austria? That in close to two years, the toll per capita in Finland and Norway is dramatically, four and more times lower without a single total shutdown? Or is there any point anymore in observing and noticing? Is it a one-way train already?

  17. She gets like that sometimes, when she comes in here on her high horse. Then we all have to listen to her bullshit. Me, I can only feel pity when a senior citizen dies, but it happens all the time. In fact every person who ever lived, died. Therefore it is only excess deaths that matter in terms of pandemic. Everyone else- up we all go.

  18. Well, if you ignore all the science and can't see the millions of deaths that have occurred over the last 20 months ... It's not just one example that have resulted in our current situation.

  20. The main problem is the God worshippers who think they owe nothing to the earth cause GOD. As for the rest, planting on clear cuts is not the same as logging in such a manner as to leave trees standing, which can be done, and it's the way nature managed forests for millenia. BC's Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development has a duty to "Stewardship of the Land", which includes ensuring Crown land is managed in such a way that it will benefit citizens now and in the future. Just because you don't believe in climate change has nothing to do with facts.

  22. There is a difference between authoritarian and autocratic. An authoritarian says "Do it this way because that is how the book says it should be done". The autocrat says "do it this way because I say so." If you have an autocrat who really knows what she is doing, it is great. Otherwise it is a disaster. Authoritarians are often mediocre at best. Currently, Canada is low on both scales. The government is fairly sensitive to public opinion. We are handicapped by the reluctance of really good people to go into politics and endure the vicious attacks becoming almost normal. You only have to listen to the stories from Rona Ambrose or Lisa Raitt about the abuse they and many other MP's were subjected to.
