The panic and desperation at the airport, can only evoke empathy from a viewer like me, as we painfully and helplessly watch (in the comfort of our living rooms), and await what is most dreaded and feared by so many. This brings to mind the unforgettable images based on true events movies: Dark of The Sun during the Congo crisis (1968, Rod Taylor) The Killing Fields 13 Hours (Benghazi) They were supposed to have 30 days before Kabul was expected to fall. When that was announced last week, I questioned how it can last 30 days when Kabul was already surrounded? I also pointed out how come US soldiers are to arrive on Sunday, when it might be too late? They should've been on stand-by, somewhere close....................... days , if not weeks before! Someone being interviewed says USA looks like a coward - running away! And its' true! They're all panicked and scrambling. This will make a great propaganda for A-lQaeda and the Taliban No words from Biden so far! He was said to be giving a statement "IN A FEW DAYS!" Lol - he should've given it YESTERDAY! Of course, that had gotten a lot of criticisms for that- and now, he's giving a statement today at 3:45 pm. A journalist who eye-witnessed the evacuation in Saigon had said that the US troops were able to pull out 26,000 Vietnamese in 18 hours! He compared that to the dismal 2 thousands or so Afghans in Kabul. He also witnessed and compared the withdrawal of Russia from Afghanistan that it went smoothly and orderly. This was from an interview on CNN. Apparently, the Talibans are already going door-to-door, seeking government officials, interpreters, journalists, women rights advocates etc.., Wasn't the withdrawals of troops announced quite a while ago? So they knew this was coming! Why was there hardly any planning or preparation made way ahead of this? Someone mentioned - this would make another good Mike Banning FALLEN movie.1 point

The notion of authority not limited by accountability and oversight is not compatible with common definition of democracy. When arbitrary measures are imposed population-wide, without critical examination and adequate, evidence based justification, without any recourse to oversight, and potentially, indefinitely (when something vague, and maybe) that cannot be a democracy in essence, other than in an empty name. There are countries where mandatory indiscriminate measures were not allowed by law. The sky has not fallen. In other countries, the decisions could and were challenged in courts and were overturned. This situation is unique, and in the pursuit of safety under unconditional and unquestioned guidance of authority we may have stepped beyond the boundaries delineating modern democracy where all authority has to be accountable to citizens. The developments over this pandemic period clearly demonstrated that under right circumstances, with right justification and stimulus, Canadian society will accept authoritarian rule. Be it catastrophic climate change, weather events such as widespread droughts or fires, out of control migration, a promise of relative and temporary safety, as defined by the authority, would trump, in the eyes of regular person, the rights to accountability and freedoms. And the rights cannot exist on paper only, they go away unless exercised. The journey of citizen rights and democracy started not so long ago, about twenty centuries at most. Interesting that at the height of technological sophistication we're approaching the point where they no longer matter. Or already arrived?1 point

Yes we should help. We will. Hopefully the airlifts can get them out safely.1 point

We got our vaccines, we’re the 9th most vaccinated country, the Covid death rate plummeted, and we were promised the removal of restrictions. Until that happens I’m not buying into more advisories or boosters, because getting vaccinated was predicated on the idea of lifting restrictions and returning to normal life. I consider our health authorities to be overselling the 4th wave and media is reporting exceptional deaths to stir the fear and sensationalism. Why aren’t our governments calling this out and implementing sensible policy? This is how people become alienated from democracy and stop trusting government.1 point

I'll try to find another one. As I said, I've been reading both sides and the rebuttals to both sides. What I'm finding is that, any doctor or scientist or study who speaks or writes about the vaccines NOT being 100% safe or pushing for everyone to get vaccinated, is immediately silenced and the article or video disappears. I'm sorry/not sorry. But I find that disturbing.1 point

cougar will only believe the "science" when it claims the sky is falling because of humans destroying the environment and the only answer to that problem that cougar will accept is central planning that controls the behavior of others anyone who does not parrot that narrative is a "denier" the climate doom cult cannot be reasoned with1 point

That was no evidence, no scientific data but lots of speculations. I am tired of campaign of misinformation by anri-vaxxers. I can counter that by many many articles by experts https://www.mskcc.org/coronavirus/myths-about-covid-19-vaccines Myth: The mRNA vaccines change your DNA and could cause cancer. Truth: None of the vaccines interact with or alter your DNA in any way, and therefore cannot cause cancer. Messenger RNA (mRNA) is not the same as DNA and cannot be combined with DNA to change your genetic code. Here’s now mRNA vaccines actually work: The mRNA vaccines use a tiny piece of the coronavirus’ genetic code to teach your immune system how to make a protein that will trigger an immune response if you get infected. The mRNA is fragile, so after it delivers the instructions to your cells, it breaks down and disappears from the body (in about 72 hours). The mRNA never even goes into the nucleus of the cell — the part that contains your DNA. Therefore, there is no truth to the myth that somehow the mRNA vaccine could inactivate the genes that suppress tumors.1 point

I'd love to be optimistic and positive just don't see where it would come from, not today at least. In this country we had a tiny 20 million population with the resources of the half of the world, abundant everything. If sustainable, prosperous humanity is ever possible, where else it could be tried, to show an example? Nope. Cut, cut, cut, fish, fish, fish, drain, drain, drain, kill, kill, kill as fast as possible, markets won't wait! Will there ever be enough? Keep dreaming. Suppose ten years from now a miracle happens and we unlimited source of energy, a sun here on Earth. Will it solve all problems? Cut, cut, cut, sell, sell, sell ever accelerating tempo, 10x, 100x energy consumption all going somewhere, where? The problem is not carbon, it's the insatiable expansion: first drain, cut and sell, then think and regret. I don't think there's been one sustainable human civilization over millennia of history, recorded and unrecorded, unless the environment held the population at bare survival level, over population in limited resources means war. If you know how to be optimistic, short of total ignorance, please show the way.1 point

Yep. Just received a letter from O'Tool. In it, he goes about how he wants to revive the "traditional Canadian industries like oil and gas, forestry, fishing and mining". I wrote right over his letter "Is 50'C not hot enough for you dumb f'?" Sealed it, put his own prepaid sticker on it and off it goes tomorrow to his Ottawa office. He mailed it with my money, so I will not spend a dime to respond. My final advice to him is to hide under a rock or shoot himself into outer space. Not the sharpest Tool in the shed that O'Tool is.1 point

Afghanistan is not a country. It's not a nation. Its people's loyalty are to their tribes and clans, not the 'country'. The government was irredeemably corrupt from top to bottom. It appointed incompetent crooks to run the military who stole the men's salaries and sold their equipment. Many of the soldiers hadn't been paid in months and struggled to find food since their officers tended to sell that whenever they could find a buyer. The people in charge of the military were political appointees, often with no experience, whose only interest in the job was what they could steal through it. No real confusion about why they collapsed. Why should they fight on behalf of that government and for those officers? Especially when the outcome was inevitable?1 point

And how many will die in the years to come? The vaccination destroys the mechanisms to keep cancers and other issues in check. What will you be saying 5 or 10 years from now when the ICUs are overrun with cancer patients? "Well, at least they didn't die of covid." But they also may not have died from cancer, if they didn't have the shot. I'm not saying NO VACCINES. I'm saying there is something fishy about the rate and pace that this is being forced on the public. I'm saying it's a choice each person needs to weigh individually.1 point

Worth a read. An Afghan vet has some opinions: " U.S. Army veteran and U.S. Senate candidate in Pennsylvania Sean Parnell slammed military generals who promoted critical race theory and sparred with Fox host Tucker Carlson instead of focusing on winning the war in Afghanistan on Sunday, stating “It seems like our generals were more concerned with fighting Tucker Carlson than they were the Taliban.” “For the last seven months, I’ve watched generals engage in Twitter fights with people, debate the merits of critical race theory on Capitol Hill,” Parnell stated. “It seems like our generals were more concerned with fighting Tucker Carlson than they were the Taliban and we are seeing the tragic and disastrous consequences of that play out on the battlefield right now." He also disagrees with Bubber on where to place the blame. If you can believe anybody would dare do that. https://nationalfile.com/video-army-veteran-says-woke-generals-were-more-concerned-with-fighting-tucker-carlson-than-fighting-the-taliban/1 point

It's really not as bad as the catastrophizers would have you believe. It also mentions climate upsides like the fact that more CO₂ in the atmosphere has acted as a fertilizer and created a profound global greening of the planet. One NASA study found that over a period of 35 years, climate change has added an area of green equivalent to two times the size of Australia. But don’t expect to read about this in any of the breathless articles on climate impact. ... Because of economic development, the UN estimates that the average person in the world will become 450 per cent as well-off by 2100 as they are today. But climate change will have a cost, in that adaptation and challenges become somewhat harder. Because of climate change, the average person in 2100 will “only” be 436 per cent as well off as today. This is not the apocalypse but a problem to which we should find smart fixes. https://financialpost.com/opinion/opinion-ipcc-global-warming-report-is-more-chill-than-you-have-read1 point

Once the election starts the Liberals will come out with some research on the social media postings of a couple of Tory candidates and brandish it aloft to demonstrate the party is racist and the Tories will immediately be on the defensive, cower and fire the candidates, and grovel in apology. The story will be Tory intolerance for the next week.1 point

Trudeau has turned the country over to commies, nihilists, and all form of do-nothing radical. I don’t know how our businesses survive the regulations, blockades, and constant guilt-plagued hand-wringing over colonialism and trumped-up supposed racism. The lunatics are running the asylum, but the public are seemingly oblivious to the politicization of education and media that is guaranteeing permanent Liberal government until the country breaks up. Is there even a Conservative party anymore? It’s all NDP-Liberal-Bloc anti-Canada coalition.1 point

Your reference to Argus' post . . . 'no vision'. Combined with a politically lazy, entitled, and ignorant voter, this has created the perfect storm for the likes of Trudeau and Butts. Brains/Butts and Bobble-head/Trudeau . . . . . and more of the same coming to a theatre near you.1 point
