  1. I am pretty sure that if someone, regardless of race or religion, went on a rampage of fondling teenage girls at a swimming pool, it would be news. The fact that in this case it was a Syrian refugee is pertinent because our government has bent over backwards to bring these people here and scoffed at the idea that they pose any threat to Canadians. But in light of this incident and others, that discussion should be revisited. Countries like Germany and Sweden have seen assaults on women follow the arrival of large number of migrants from Muslim lands. Now we may be seeing that pattern here in Canada as well. If Muslim migrants just don't know any better, what steps are our government officials taking to make sure they learn? If Muslim migrants do know better but don't respect women, then maybe our government is doing Canadian women a disservice by bringing more and more people who don't respect women to Canada. If it's just "a few bad apples", then maybe better screening, as Ms Leitch suggests, would be a good idea. -k

  2. I had requested for the like feature.....and I still think a like feature is good. However, reputation ratings is a bad idea. By putting this kind of reputation ratings - MLF is actually enabling, and helping in the BIASED "assassination" of posters' reputation in this forum. How can you do that to your members? You refused to put up a suspension and ban list as your way of protecting your members.....and yet you put up something like this? Why do you want to demoralize your members from speaking their minds, delivering their own style, stifling them to "sanitize" the way they deliver? This board is so dead already as it is, and a lively fiery debates are what's needed to stimulate interest to attract newbies into signing in. Why do you want it bland? If it is the desire of MLF to cleanse this board of posters who doesn't share their views.....you don't have to go to this length. Just say so that certain posters are better off to go elsewhere.

  3. When asked by the National Post in an interview to explain when he thought he first began hearing voices Mr. Lee, aka Mr. Baker stated the following: When did you begin to experience schizophrenia? A. In 2004. I didn’t know what it was. I now know what it is. I began to hear voices that normal people do not hear. I thought I heard the voice of God telling me to write down my journey. The voice told me that I was the third story of the Bible. That I was like the second coming of Jesus. I was to save people from a space-alien attack. That is why I travelled around the country. I am not sure of all the places I went to. I now know that it was schizophrenia I was suffering from. Mr. Lee was aware 4 years before he engaged in the attack he did on the bus there was something wrong with h him. So was his family. He divorced his wife in 2006. He had few friends and according to the agreed statement of facts in court he was known to be violent. He emigrated to Canada in 2001, and became a citizen in 2005 and found it impossible to hold down a job. Here are the agreed statement of facts: http://blogs.canoe.com/raisinghell/politics/the-story-of-vince-li/ What is NOT clear and remains unclarified is what attempts if any Li made prior to the killing to take medication and seek treatment. Certain evidence indicates he was in Halifax and released by a psychiatrist after a few hours. The courts did not pursue inquiries as to his pre-existing medical history because he claimed he could not remember. According to his ex-wife, she says he was "briefly" hospitalized in 2003 or 2004 after OPP found him along side a highway. His wife said he would disappear for long periods of time, took unexplained bus trips and would ramble. Now his wife said she was not aware he was on medication. However she also admitted she was unaware where he was when he travelled all over Canada for long periods of time by bus. One of the things that we will never fully understand is in fact who treated him from 2003 to 2008. It is highly doubtful when he was hospitalized he was never given medication or after he was arrested by the OPP and sent to hospital he was never given medication. We will never know because Vince Li aka Wil Baker claims he does not remember. I don't buy it. I also do not buy the clinical picture of a man who was NOT on medication and stopped taking it prior to the murder he committed. Its not consistent with his admitting he knew he was will, could remember he was ill and had schizophrenia. Someone had told him. Doctors can't force medication on people but they don't send them on the road without recommending psychiatric treatment let alone medication. If a person refused treatment they discharge them. Eye can call me all the names he wants but the fact is he was hospitalized and automatically this means they would have tried to treat him with medication. Its standard protocol with the homeless who have no fixed address to do a case history. It would have been evident from as his wife says his "ramblings" he was ill. Schizophrenics exhibit disjointed speech patterns that can be picked up by a physician in as little as a minute to 5 minutes. It is true a formal psychiatric diagnosis of certain illnesses could go on months but not schizophrenia. Its not hard to pick up in adults, especially ones found on the side of the road talking to God. What we have here is someone who chose to remain unmedicated and untreated which is extremely and unfortunately common with schizophrenics. The assumption they are too insane to know they need medication is an interesting one. Not all schizophrenics fit the legal insanity criteria, its only when they break from reality and have an acute delusional attack they are technically insane. They can function in our world with schizophrenia albeit with extreme difficulty and suffering and no the law does not allow doctors to force medication on them unfortunately until they commit a crime. That is what happened in this case. His individual rights to refuse medication and treatment were honoured. Its also his Charter of Rights inalienable right to refuse treatment until he shows he is a danger to himself or others Now Eye can turn this guy into an innocent victim who had no idea he was sick but he did, years before the attack. I don't blame his wife. I don't blame police, I don't even blame the doctors who released him-the system does not allow you to impose treatment on someone until they are convicted of a crime or they hurt themselves or others. I know. I used to represent mentally ill at capacity hearings. To get someone put away against their own wishes is not easy at all. The reason for that is because at one point it was too easy to put people away and so the pendelum swung the other way. Its a delicate balancing act between individual civil rights and the state intervening and saying social priorities trump individual ones. Psychiatry is inexact. It changes its criteria for diagnosis constantly as more and more information is learned as to how the brain functions. In this case its improbable from the temporary Li and his wife gave, neither knew he was a violent ticking time bomb who refused treatment including medication prior to the killing. Now Besty brought up the point I concede. His refusal to get treatment or take medication the first time will remain in dispute. Me personally I thnk he had sufficient awareness to get help and did not. I doubt I could prove that sufficient awareness in court. Eye is trying to paint this person as a victim. He's no victim. He is a violent mental patient. He needs supervision. Right now he's living alone with none.

  4. Certainly other religions like Christianity and Judaism have had significant reformation movements over the centuries, and created a lot of schisms within them. There are still many Orthodox and Conservative members of those religions as well as the enlightened reformed ones. Are you saying that reformation must be forced on a religion? What differentiates that from banning religions entirely. Many of us think religion is vile, but we accept and allow freedom for the deluded because we have seen that attempts at banning it have not historically worked. Should we discriminate only against certain religions?

  15. Rue pretty much nailed the important points in his opening post. Where the left/right split comes is that from the left, the "rights" of the individual trump (sorry if that choice of word offends anyone on the left) the right of the public to a reasonable effort to protect their/our safety. NOBODY who kills (and the possible complicating phrase here would be "intentionally kills") another human is "sane" by any standard, but reality is that as has been mentioned, many criminals are to some extent suffering from some mental illness. So, we jail those with a bit of mental illness, but let one with a genuinely homicidal affliction walk free with NO supervision to ensure he is medicated to a reasonable level of safety????? What is still missing from this discussion is that Vince Li CHOSE not to medicate. While the left may not wish to punish him for what he did not "sanely chose" to do (decapitate and canibalize innocent person) nobody is punishing him for what he DID freely chose to do that caused that death.

  20. Well if you're going to include the crowd size spat as a "failure", then I guess he's had a few. I notice you don't care to count his wins thus far, as the rest of the left don't care to mention either. It's funny, I truly was neutral towards Trump when he won the nomination, and I referred to him as a scoundrel. I was hoping one of the other contenders would take it. But I found myself defending common sense with regards to Trump and left zealot nonsense like he's the next Hitler, he's a racist, he's got ties with Russia, etc. These attacks were nothing more than conspiracy theories. Nothing real to back them up. Hey, 9/11 was an inside job too. He's certainly a flawed person, and certainly not a skilled politician, but that's part of his appeal I think. That's what won me over, the fact that he's not a politician, and doesn't owe favours across Washington and isn't connected to the power brokers. Now some of them attack him out of fear after they've milked the system for decades. He's rough around the edges, but that's what his administration team is for. At the end of the day, if he can get the US economy humming and get millions of people back to work, then he'll win a second term. But at 76, I don't know if he'll have the energy for another 4.

  23. Israel has never attacked a defenseless country. Israel's only foreign policy interest over the last 70 odd years, so far as I can see, has been self-protection. Bear in mind Israel and Iran do not share a border of any kind. The only reason for hostility between them is Iran's relentless threats to destroy Israel, combined with their funding and arming of terrorist groups which attack Israel. If Iran would stop these things Israel would pay no attention to them whatsoever.

  24. Yet your knee jerk reaction is to deport him without due process? First is the due process of the legal system. Did you know that people charged with a crime in Canada have a right to a trial before execution conviction? And since he has crossed the border into Canada, he has the right to endless years of immigration hearings, with the end result he will stay in Canada after we spend a few million on deciding that foregone conclusion.. Deport him to a wartorn country? Never happen.

  25. In part, I feel for these people. They have been raised to believe that women must always cover up. Women, even modestly dressed women, do not socialize with men in his country, unless they are family. If he's reasonably young he's probably never even seen a woman's ankle and never been around girls or women who weren't related to him. He's also likely been taught that women who aren't Muslim aren't protected under Islam's moral code, and that women who dress as western women do are whores. Whore, in the middle east, means something a lot worse than it does in the West. A whore is an absolutely contemptible creature in the Muslim world. If your daughter were one you'd kill her to protect your family's honour. So now he's going to a swimming pool and surrounded by pretty young girls in bikinis. I'm not the least bit surprised he figured that as whores they were fair game, and that there was nothing wrong with groping them. Indeed, it was his right to do as he wished. It's simply how he was raised. It's part of his cultural background.

  28. LOL! DoggiesBite.org! You really take that site seriously! Have you done any research at all into it? They're charlatans, to say the least. For instance, a dog catcher fell and struck her head when she was chasing a dog, they list that as a pit bull fatality in their stats. Another was the person running from a dog (non pit bull) they were hit by a bus, pit bull fatality. Their statistician has been quoted as stating that he doesn't "play the kennel club name game", in other words it doesn't matter what the breed is. If he says it's a pit bull, then it's a pit bull. He also falsely claims a voluminous record of academic credentials, all fake. In fact a journalist obtained two degree's from the university this "expert" claims to have obtained his from. Just one problem though, he got them for his cat. Sadly many people take these liars at face value and believe the fabricated bile that they spew forth. Here's a few facts about Coleen Lynn and the incident that sparked the whole websites creation. 30. This is reminding me more and more of the Rob Ford saga. A credible professional stakes their integrity on information they received from sources that must remain anonymous. Rabid defenders question that person's integrity and that of the media for reporting on it without verification. Then they deny the possibility of its existence, even though the politician involved does not seem to be above that behaviour and is obviously lying about it. Eventually the truth comes out after the guy is dead. The main difference is the Star reporters didn't have to hide for fear that they and their families would suddenly die of polonium exposure.

  31. Well I am another "ethnic" but I am not a Canadian Jew. I am not even a Jewish Canadian. Don't hyphen me. I am simply Canadian. If someone asks I tell them I am a Jewish person but that to me is an ethnic cultural thing that comes second to being Canadian and is subordinate to being Canadian. don't hyphen or qualify me. I believe as a Canadian I should be able to speak both English and French. My French is o.k. but I can't write it very well and my children are fluently bilingual. I also believe as a Canadian the first Canadians were the aboriginal peoples not the British or French and as such the true founding culture from which all others flow is the aboriginal one which I choose to respect and defer to. I believe the concept we are a nation of nations (unlike the U.S. melting pot out of many comes 1 concept) comes from our choosing to incorporate this aborginal holistic concept to accommodate both the British and French influences that came after. Our British legal origins in all of Canada but Quebec and our Quebec civil law system were envisioned to co-exist as nations within a nation precisely because we learned from the native peoples that it was possible to be a nation of nations and operate on many levels of co-existence and we did not have to be only one or the other. We chose to be many. We embraced as many aboriginal legal concepts as we did British and French ones and that makes us different from the U.S. which rejected its aboriginal origins. Many of our laws are still based on aboriginal principles. This aboriginal origins difference I believe makes us far different then the US in how we view Canadians and the fact is other then our aboriginal peoples, we are all waves of immigrants who came here. To me we are a mosaic in progress with obvious aboriginal, British and French historic and legal traditions and the key to our collective survival will come from whether we choose to continue to embrace our aboriginal roots and holistic approach to being a nation of nations or reject it and adapt a totalitarian singular entity model. I believe it is possible to put Canada first and still retain other levels of identity. The two do not have to be incompatible if we are willing to put our vision of Canada at a different level and one that precedes and supercedes our ethnic or religious one. I personally believe if my Jewish collective identity clashes with my Canadian one, I can not be a Canadian citizen and put my Jewish identity first. If I feel that way I have to move to Israel. I don't. So I put Canada first because Canada gives me the right to practice and feel like a Jew and not fear being Jewish so you better believe I put Canada first. Canadian soldiers and other Canadians died so I could live in the country I do now. I honour that. Canada gives me my freedom, my standard of living my life where I do not fear any slaughters and where I can walk down the street and not fear the police or army. I honour and cherish that. Canada is a place where I can openly criticize my government and when I am sick I get medical care I do not have to pay for. You bet I put Canada first. I can be a jew and honour by ancestors who perished and died. One way to honour them is to know they could only dream I their children's children could live in a country of freedom like Canada. It is because I am Canada I can be a Jew and not die simply because I am a Jew. So you bet I put Canada first. I will also say this. Canada has certain fundamental principles that must come first. If you want to marry four wives because your religion says you can-tough no you can not. Further, if you believe in your culture or religion women must be subordinate to men this is not putting Canada first and its not acceptable. Its incompatible with being Canadian. You want to cover up and refuse to show your face no you don't vote, no you don't get your driving license and no you do not testify in court. You will not opt out of Canada. You will not put Canada second. No this is not a country that should have to condone and assimilate anything anyone wants or believes they are entitled to. No. Canada has limits. Yes I believe Canada has to draw a line and be intolerant of intolerance. Yes I believe tolerance has its limitations. No I do not think people should opt out of our laws or pick and chose only those obligations of citizenship that suit them. Canada is not some buffet you nibble on. Sure I believe as much as possible in individual freedoms-go practice your religion but don't tell me you are entitled to beat your wife or won't take your face cover off to vote or won't wear a motor cycle helmet because it won't fit on your turbin. Common sense says there are limitations and if you are not willing to assimilate and conform and expect everything your way, I say leave. One last thing. No Gilles Duceppe or any other Canadian new or old, don't collect federal money and a federal pension and claim to be a seperatist or another citizen at the same time. That makes you a two faced Canadian like so many who come to this country and demands rights and entitlement that puts this country second to you. You don't want to put Canada first get the f...ck out. Also if you want to teach your kids your culture and language you do it on your own time after school. The official languages in Canada are English and French. Also don't pull the I am a real Canadian card on me. No one is but aboriginal people and I never had one native Canadian call me an immigrant. Not one. On the other hand I have heard many non native Canadians say that to aboriginals or say they demand entitlement for themselves before Canada. That is b.s. They were the founding people-they do not have the same experience and relationship with Canada as the rest of us who came after. When we started this country our laws as a basic for creating Canada recognized their pre-existence as the starting point from which all other Canadian things would follow. we enshrined this in treaties that defined the aboriginal peoples as our founding people whose rights preceded Canada's and would continue within Canada as one nation in a nation of other nations. That is the concept we used to define Canada. That is what our treaties set out and which we then violated. We have yet to complete resolving the broken treaties acknowledging the pre-existence of aboriginals and their becoming a nation within our nation. Until we resolve through resitution those broken promises we live a lie. We live as a nation that ignores its true identity of a nation of nations. We will remain fractured and confused. If anything the aboriginal peoples are the only truly second class Canadians and will remain that way until we resolve the treaties we broke with them and fairly determine how we will define our interaction as nations within another nation. So don't bitch to me about their being unfair because they want the treaties we broke with them remedied. Unlike the two faced Canadians that came after them they didn't come to Canada and upgrade their lifestyle to something far better then they could have been without Canada. Unlike the rest of us they don't benefit from what you and I take for granted. They live without water and proper homes and facilities. They live without work. They live in third world conditions many Canadians flee from and transcend. To me multi-culturalism is a moot point. The entire world is made up of many cultures. We are all a mix of something. No one is pure. But don't ask me to call myself a Canadian first if it means I remain unresolved with my Canadian origins, i.e., the nation of aboriginal peoples. Until they are full Canadians I am not really a Canadian. I am proud of this nation and what it has given me and I am grateful but no I can't appreciate my benefits knowing the people who made this possible for me can't. I share this nation. I do not own it. I share it. I am fortunate enough to share it. It belongs to know one. The earth is not owned by us. It is shared by us.The portion of earth known as Canada is just a part of the earth we choose to share. I wish to share it in a way that honours all its different forms of life and not just a select few.

  32. As I said, the only reason Iran is Israel's enemy is because Iran has repeatedly committed acts of war against Israel by funding an providing weapons to terrorists who attack Israel and because Iran's leadership continually threatens to destroy Israel. This is absolute and undeniable fact. Someone claimed Iran needed ballistic missiles to defend themselves from Israel. Any logical reply would point out that the only reason Iran needs to fear Israel is because of Iran's behavior. Not that logic ever has any place in your ideologically driven positions, of course.

The Sun is completely full of shit and so is anyone who peddles it. It's as simple as that. I have to say the arguments that have been presented so far here today in the case against Will Baker are about as lame and flat out wrong as it gets around here. Maybe everyone's waiting to see if Rona Ambose can come up with something more substantive than than it "doesn't seem right". OTOH Ambrose is probably casting about for a better argument too and "it just feels wrong" is about the best thing she's hearing bubbling up from the right-wing base she represents, I guess it would be a little unseemly to cite things like the prescriptions for lead to the head or the lol's and yuks about the eating habits of schizophrenics, whattya think? I have to say conservatism is just about the nastiest challenge the mentally ill have to overcome.

  39. If a country chooses to ban a group of certain religion, they have the right to do that. Just like companies have the right to hire and fire who they want, countries should be allowed to do the same. Religion is also something personal so it has absolutely NO PLACE in a way a country sets it's laws and rules. If a country chooses to ban a certain religion, they should have the right to do that.
