Because Canada is not capable and the other option is Russia.

Take your pick.

Russia? Russia is unable to win a war against a country that barely had an army a few years ago. If Trump gave a damn about the Russian military threat to the world the US would still be fully supporting Ukraine.

Did America need to own Britain to fight alongside it in both world wars? Trump’s premise is ridiculous. He wants to own Greenland because it makes him feel better.

Amazing how the wrongies believe Greenland is a security issue and not a desperate distraction.
Kind of like demanding your landlord who lets you do anything you want, sell you his house, or else.

Apparently the EU recognizes the security issue as well. They are now negotiating some sort of arrangement with US officials now.

Huh...guess the speach helped.

Looks like he's taco'd out over Greenland - for the moment at least.

I guess now he'll be whining about getting a Nobel prize for not starting a war.

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,

Greatest presidential president EVER! “"We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable. But I won't do that," he said during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.”

I am looking forward to Trump speaking in Davos.

Is Trump threatening Canada in this bit from his Davos speech? Does he really expect the world to bow to him?

Trump said, "Canada should be grateful to us but they're not. Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark."

What a complete and total embarrassment. Trump kept referring to “Iceland” when he meant “Greenland” and said they love him, and they call him “Daddy.”

I do believe myself. Russia is losing in Ukraine at this stage. Any use of nuclear weapons would be a massive gamble and an admission that they have lost the conventional war.

They do not fight Ukraine on its own there.  You know that?  It is billions and billions invested by the West in weapons and manpower.

Russia keeps its reserves in case they are needed elsewhere.   They want to win by attrition.

How long did the States fight in Afghanistan?  Did they win?

Nice propaganda. What ACTUALLY happened is that TACO chickened out. He originally said “nothing less” than US ownership would do. Now he’s canceling all his threats in exchange for a “framework” for some sort of vague “future agreement” on Greenland’s security where US ownership isn’t even explicitly stated.

TACO lost, plain and simple

Only with nukes. Their conventional army has failed to achieve its objectives for 4 years now. And it’s eating their economy. They’re deep in hock to China, perhaps irreversibly so.

And once again, you are criticizing Trump for not doing more to take Greenland.

You will flip flop on every side to further your irrational hate.

How do we know? Because Russia has not won yet. They are losing something like 20,000 men a month to take a few yards of land.

They have no rush.   Again where do you get your info?  20,000 mosquitos or men, you are talking about? Must be mosquitos.

1867 was just after the end of slavery in the US. Standards have changed in the world since then. Trump refuses to rule out military action against a NATO member that has been nothing but cooperative on this issue. That should be unacceptable to everybody.

Some standards have changed, but not all.   Trump's interest in Greenland is consistent with U.S. policy and actions over the ensuing 150 years.   How he reaches that objective is up for debate, and based on his speech at Davos, military action is not in the cards (for now).

NATO has plenty of other issues to iron out amongst member nations, including being so dependent on U.S. capabilities.   Maybe work on that and Trump, like previous presidents who have challenged NATO spending and commitment (e.g. Canada), will find bigger/better fish to fry.

Not so fast...America did own Britain in several ways for them to get American support.  Ditto Suez Crisis in 1956 (Eisenhower).   Britain's WW2 and post war obligations to the U.S. are still being felt to this day.

Quote
Winston Churchill's famous instruction was:

Never be separated from the Americans," delivered before his 1955 resignation, emphasizing the crucial "special relationship" for global security and future prosperity, seeing American strength and British moral force as complementary, though he had periods of anti-American sentiment in the 1920s over debt, his core belief in Anglo-American unity for world order remained paramount, especially post-WWII.

Discussing who pays what for defence is fine but should be entirely separate from the sovereignty of Greenland issue raised by Trump. There’s an assumption at the heart of NATO and the West that nations have the right to determine their own government. This isn’t the Warsaw Pact. What’s deeply disturbing about Trump is that he seems to get on better with Xi and Putin than he does with democratically elected leaders in Europe. Differences over immigration, taxation and how much each country should pay for its defence loom larger in his mind than the fact that the countries of the West share hard-won, basic assumptions on personal freedom and national self-determination. Frankly, it’s hard to tell which team he is on at this stage.

It looks like the US will control Greenland for the foreseeable future. Goal achieved.

Really? Let's see what a real military expert thinks.

Now...before you start your ridiculous "putin puppet" horseshit, MacGregor is a real expert. Not just a bought and paid for talking head.

But tell ya what. If you feel so strongly about Ukrainian sovereignty, go fight.

No?

News reports…

So how many men do you think Russia is losing a month and where do you get your information?

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c62n922dnw7o

So from the internet and directly from an Ukraine supporter.

You can imagine a country the size of Ukraine is nothing compared to the size of Russia.

So… I’m using stats that are observed, documented, and researched at the highest levels of military intelligence and leadership, reported on by professional news outlets…

And you have some random guy you know… and still can’t answer the question.

The Art of the Deal:CBS

Greenland will stay sovereign. The US gets to build up military support.

The left still does not get it. Trump goes in hard, acts like a bull in a China shop and then gets the deal done on the terms he actually wanted. He never wanted to own Greenland. He just wanted to have a military base so that Russia and China would not.

Look, Russia and China would never invade North America proper. They aren't capable. But they would invade Greenland. It would be easy to take and it would be a huge strategic advantage that they could use as a negotiating chip. Trump just put that chip in his pocket. It's gone. Once our base is up and running, Greenland will be secure.

Really ?   Nations have that right is a NATO assumption ?    History says otherwise...with some NATO members conspiring to topple governments (e.g. Canada's plot against Haiti with France/USA in 2004 to overthrow President Aristide), Kosovo War, Iran (UK/USA), Libya (2011).

Canada had specifically concocted the "responsibility to protect" foreign policy to justify such interventions, going far beyond "peacekeeping".    Several other NATO members did the same.

Good...this has effectively shaken up Europe and Canada to assess their NATO roles and commitments.   (France actually left NATO's command back in the 1960's...didn't come back until 2009.)  Talk is cheap, and the Americans are tired of paying for the lion's share of "collective defence".   Trump is on the American team, just like many presidents before him...this means working with Russia and China too.   Canada and many other NATO members are not in this heavyweight fight club.
