But they didn’t want to anger the president.

Quote

The so-called moderate Republicans promised they would not slash Medicaid. Conservatives vowed not to explode the national debt. Party leaders insisted that they would not lump a jumble of unrelated policies into a single enormous piece of legislation and rush that bill through Congress before any reasonable person had time to read it.

But President Donald Trump wanted his “big, beautiful bill” enacted in time to sign it with a celebratory flourish on America’s birthday. And so nearly all GOP lawmakers in the House and Senate, setting aside these and many other pledges, principles, and policy demands, did what the president desired.

The legislation that cleared the Senate and House this week is many things, and it does fulfill some core promises that Trump made as a candidate: The measure makes permanent his first-term tax cuts (and reduces some taxes even further), injects billions in new spending for immigration enforcement and national defense, and rolls back some of the incentives for clean energy enacted by the predecessor whom Trump loathes, Joe Biden.

And they will pay with their jobs in November.

So much disinformation.  The Medicaid “cuts” are that illegals no longer qualify for benefits, and able bodied people are required to work at least part time.  Oh the horror.

Rich people love it as they’ll get richer.   MAGA people love it, but don’t know why.

The bill benefits nearly everyone, and particularly the vast majority of taxpayers.

Why do you say that? The bill has a lot of good stuff in it.

Don't you think that if I were wrong that I would know it?

Presumably you mean November 2026? You realize it's not this November right? I know it doesn't FEEL like he's only been in 6 months but it's still another 15 months to midterms ;)

A lot can happen in that time.

Trump never promised not to remove illegal immigrants from Medicaid, enforce work requirements, nor does anything in this bill cut Medicare.

Why do Republicans always pretend they care about the national debt when EVERY single Republican president runs the debt up massively?   Republicans spend their entire lives shrieking and tearing at their clothes about how the debt is going to kill us all and then when one their presidents get elected it’s a drunken debt spree and they’re like “oh well it’s only money and it’s all for a good cause!”

Yeah but if your shoes wear out the Republicans spend on new leather soles, the Democrats on new shoe laces.

Well, if it helps, you first understand the dynamics of our political parties and the political spectrum, what many call the "establishment," and how it is anything other than just Republicans who drive up the debt massively.

Folks like you only pretend to care about the debt when you can use it to make extremely biased talking points.

Because the one thing WORSE than debt is REPUBLICANS PAYING for it.

Notice that THEIR ONLY alternative to debt is cutting spending, esp on things like healthcare for people who cannot afford it.

Americans did not have any UHC taken from them.

Medicaid was never meant to be some form of universal health care and Democrats have been pushing it and pushing and giving it to illegal immigrants.

Yes, spending is a significant part of the problem with debt... and deficit spending. Duh.

LOL no they don’t. Tens of Millions of Americans were able to afford healthcare under Obama’s budget. Trump’s bill takes healthcare away from tens of millions. Biden’s budget gave tax breaks for buying zero emissions vehicles. Trump’s budget cancels that and gives tax breaks for gun silencers

Bush’s massive deficit was for his ginned up  fraudulent invasion of Iraq based on his administration’s lies and fabrications, that killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians and thousands of American troops
